Doctrine of the Trinity

Foundations of Truth We think it is important to know how God is at work in and through his creation. Understanding the Trinity and the specific functions of the Trinity allows us to see that our God is actively involved in the day to day lives of His children and those He desires to have a relationship with. When studying these lessons there are things that you can do that will help you to understand the depth of each lesson. The first thing you can do is make sure you know the context of the verse, who wrote it, who it is to, and what theme the author is trying to explain. This will give you the background for each verse and it will illuminate the truth that is being taught. The more repetition about the truth you can get, the better. The purpose for having only scriptures and questions is you need to read the scriptures and understand what they say instead of hearing someone paraphrase it and give an opinion about it that could distort the true meaning.

Overview This section is about the Trinity and the many functions that exist in this “one God” that exists in “3 persons.” The goal of this section is to give you a clear understanding of what the scriptures say about the Trinity. This sections is not be used to try to understand the complexity of how the Trinity is one God but 3 persons. We want to make sure that you understand what the Bible says about the Trinity. Focal Points Focal Point 1- We want you to know that there are “3 persons” that exist within this one God. We will use scripture to show you references in the Old and New Testament that speak to the plurality of God. Please underline each time one of the Trinity is mentioned in each scripture. You will learn it better that way. Focal Point 2- We want you to not only understand the concept of 3 persons that make up one God, but that they all have the same Godly attributes. These attributes are omnipresence, omniscience, and eternal. Focal Point 3- We want you to understand that even though they are 3 parts in 1, there is still one god. Focal Point 4- We want you to understand the functions of each part of the Trinity. How the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit each have specific ways in which they are suppose to minister to us.

Foundation of Truth The Trinity 1 John 5:7 For there are three that testify. Below we see three basic truth statements about the Trinity. Each is supported in scripture. 1- There are 3 persons in the Trinity: God the Father God the Son God the Holy Spirit

2- Each one is fully God.

3- They are one God.

There are Three Persons of the Trinity/God’s Plurality Genesis 1:26 (us/our) Then God said, “Let us make man in our image, after our likeness. Genesis 3:22 (us) Then the LORD God said, “Behold, the man has become like one of us in knowing good and evil. Now, lest he reach out his hand and take also of the tree of life and eat, and live forever—” Isaiah 6:8 (I/us) And I heard the voice of the Lord saying, “Whom shall I send, and who will go for us?” Then I said, “Here I am! Send me.” Matthew 3:16-17 And when Jesus was baptized, immediately he went up from the water, and behold, the heavens were opened to him, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and coming to rest on him; and behold, a voice from heaven said, “This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased.” 2 Corinthians 13:4 For he was crucified in weakness, but lives by the power of God. For we also are weak in him, but in dealing with you we will live with him by the power of God. John 15:26 But when the Helper comes, whom I will send to you from the Father, the Spirit of truth, who proceeds from the Father, he will bear witness about me.

Omnipresent- Psalm 139:8-12 If I ascend to heaven, you are there! If I make my bed in Sheol, you are there! If I take the wings of the morning and dwell in the uttermost parts of the sea, even there your hand shall lead me, and your right hand shall hold me. If I say, “Surely the darkness shall cover me, and the light about me be night,” even the darkness is not dark to you; the night is bright as the day, for darkness is as light with you. Omniscient- Acts 15:8 And God, who knows the heart, bore witness to them, by giving them the Holy Spirit just as he did to us. Psalm 139:1-2 O LORD, you have searched me and known me! They All Have Specific Functions Functions of God the Father Genesis 1:1 In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth. God the Father created the universe. Exodus 20:11 For in six days the LORD made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that is in them, and rested on the seventh day. Therefore the LORD blessed the Sabbath day and made it holy. God the Father created man. Genesis 1:26 Then God said, “Let us make man in our image, after our likeness. And let them have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the heavens and over the livestock and over all the earth and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth.” God the Father give and preserves life in man, likewise He cares for His creation. Psalm 8:6-8 You have given him dominion over the works of your hands; you have put all things under his feet, all sheep and oxen, and also the beasts of the field, the birds of the heavens, and the fish of the sea, whatever passes along the paths of the seas. God the Father disciplines and judges. Matthew 18:34-35 And in anger his master delivered him to the jailers, until he should pay all his debt. So also my heavenly Father will do to every one of you, if you do not forgive your brother from your heart. Proverbs 3:11-12 My son, do not despise the LORD's discipline or be weary of his reproof, for the LORD reproves him whom he loves, as a father the son in whom he delights. God is the author of every good and perfect gift. James 1:17 Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights with whom there is no variation or shadow due to change.

Functions of God the Son: 1- He was to carry out the plans of God in creation. John 1:3-5 All things were made through him, and without him was not any thing made that was made. In him was life, and the life was the light of men. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it. Colossians 1:6 Which has come to you, as indeed in the whole world it is bearing fruit and increasing—as it also does among you, since the day you heard it and understood the grace of God in truth.

2- He was to carry out the redemptive plan of God. Hebrews 10:10 And by that will we have been sanctified through the offering of the body of Jesus Christ once for all. John 14:6 Jesus said to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.” Luke 19:10 For the Son of Man came to seek and to save the lost. 2 Corinthians 5:21 For our sake he made him to be sin who knew no sin, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God. Isaiah 53:5 But he was pierced for our transgressions; he was crushed for our iniquities; upon him was the chastisement that brought us peace, and with his wounds we are healed.

Functions of God the Holy Spirit: He leads and directs. Matthew 4:1 Then Jesus was led up by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil. He leads into worship. John 4:23 But the hour is coming, and is now here, when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth, for the Father is seeking such people to worship him. The Holy Spirit gives comfort, health, and strength. John 15:26 But when the Helper comes, whom I will send to you from the Father, the Spirit of truth, who proceeds from the Father, he will bear witness about me. Acts 9:31 So the church throughout all Judea and Galilee and Samaria had peace and was being built up. And walking in the fear of the Lord and in the comfort of the Holy Spirit, it multiplied. The Holy Spirit produces fruit in our lives. Galatians 5:22-23 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law. He seals us. 2 Corinthians 1:22 And who has also put his seal on us and given us his Spirit in our hearts as a guarantee. Ephesians 4:30 And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, by whom you were sealed for the day of redemption. He convicts the world. John 16:8 And when he comes, he will convict the world concerning sin and righteousness and judgment.
