1. Our Vision Design and Sourcing House South Africa (D-‐A-‐S-‐H-‐SA) has a vision to become a design studio and manufacturing plant serving the Design industry of South Africa and abroad Independent Designers in South Africa will be able to use a world class manufacturing plant in South Africa exclusively while international retailers will be able to manufacture their designs in Cape Town, South Africa. Dash services customers across the board •
Young designers entering the industry
•
Established designers needing a reliable supply chain
•
Designers needing export assistance
•
International buyers needing design support for export
•
International designers needing design support for export
•
International retailers needing production support for export
3
1.1. Hurdles in the Industry As a Designer entering into the industry of fashion, the hurdles are challenging. You know you are talented. You would like to produce garments that you believe the market would respond to, but you are faced with financial constraints and lack of resources resulting in your attempts to produce your designs being more difficult that you anticipated. 1.2. More constraints for Local Designers in Africa •
Finding skilled staff to outsource your various stages of production.
•
Spending hours in the car driving from one place to the next trying to find the person best suited to your product.
•
Having to rely on outsourced workers that do not make your work a priority and are not of a standard that you require.
•
The best service providers normally work in large institutions such as design studios in Cape Town.
•
Having access to garment ranges for inspiration, as you are not able to travel overseas due to budget constraints.
•
Having access to fabric bases and trims from overseas due to your minimum units.
•
Ending up using base colour fabrics and prints that can be seen in other designers’ ranges due to the low availability of fabric ranges in South Africa.
•
Having to use the “informal manufacturing sector” for production leading to quality issues on your products.
4
•
Spending your time carrying production elements from one stage to another. This leaves you with very little time to spend on what you are good at; “designing” and “marketing” your range
•
Lacking support from a team of people that are educated in the field of production and who are happy to share their wealth of knowledge with you to ensure that mistakes are avoided and costs are not incurred to you. The Team at Dash has been there and understands the inner workings of the industry. For this reason that we have created a venue where these problems can be solved under one roof.
5
1.3. Constraints for designers and retailers aiming to secure production in countries other than China •
Having production nightmares in countries such as India and China due to unreliability of the production
•
Not being able to meet the production minimums of China or India
•
Being charged unaffordable surcharges for lower units that lead to your garment items being unaffordable
•
Dealing with exchange rate fluctuations in currencies such as the dollar that lead to an increase in costs
•
Vendor ethics and business attitude towards commitments and delivery dates
6
