Supporting Nuclear New Build... Design and approval In the US, for the new generation of nuclear reactors, ABSC is performing seismic assessment and PSA during the design phase for utilities. This incorporates updates and enhancements to both design and build codes and meets strict regulator assessments. ABSC is currently supplying independent peer advice to nuclear regulators in the US, UK and Bulgaria specifically relating to safety assurance, security arrangements, emergency planning and site identification and qualification for new build projects. We conducted mechanical design calculations, external hazard analysis assessment, qualification of electrical equipment and structural component failure analysis of new cranes being provided to a nuclear facility. ABSC provided seismic analysis of concrete and steelwork structures of a new box encapsulation plant, as well as providing guidance to a number of suppliers for mechanical handling equipment, shield doors and transfer bogies.

Construction and Licensing ABSC are currently engaged in assisting major suppliers obtain US regulatory approval for the use of their products and services in nuclear new build. In Bulgaria, we are assisting a nuclear utility in design and risk assessment supporting their nuclear new build project at a partially constructed site, as well as working as an owner’s consultant and works supervisor assisting through the design and construction phases of a new thermal power station. We supported a nuclear laboratory in the US in preparing the Documented Safety Analyses for the facility. This included hazard identification and screening, hazard evaluation studies, accident analysis, hazard evaluation report preparation, technical safety requirements, scenario consequence quantification, and annual updates to safety authorization basis documents. ABSC provided ASME engineering consulting support to the Hungarian nuclear power plant, as reviewer of qualification assessments of the reactor, pressurizer, steam generator, main coolant circuit, and ECCS systems being qualified in accordance with ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code requirements. We have provided support to US and UK regulators in their licensing of COL and GDA applications. Our support has ranged from environmental assessment and hazard review to design review.

...and Throughout Reactor Life Plant Operation We provided wind damage assessment, engineering and failure analysis to a US nuclear power plant following Hurricane Gustav in 2008. This allowed rapid identification of root cause failures and enabled repairs to be made quickly and the reactor restarted. ABS Consulting supported six nuclear plants to address unidentified gas voiding, which challenged safety system operation, pump performance, and caused pressure transients. We performed extensive field investigation, fluid hydraulic pressure transient analysis, and detailed piping system structural analysis to improve safe plant operation. By developing processes and software, we provided risk informed asset management services for a US Nuclear Operating Company. This work facilitated consistency in decision-making concerning investment, plant performance and safe operation. ABSC performed an international asset integrity study of steam generator management practices at Taiwanese and US nuclear plants. This study identified inspection, monitoring and mitigation procedures to minimise degradation and forced outages. Strategies were proposed taking account of plant safety, environmental safety and capacity factor. Our natural and man-made hazard studies for a major European utility’s £2 billion assets quantified their Maximum Probable Loss which assisted them in determining the necessary insurance coverage. In response to new NRC concerns, ABSC has conducted security vulnerability assessments for 18 US nuclear power facilities, considering aspects of security, including perimeter protection and blast effects.

Plant Lifetime Extension ABSC performed the PSA for certain safety systems at a Swiss nuclear power plant, resulting in backfit cost reductions of more than US $100 million. Our seismic margin assessment of a Canadian nuclear reactor demonstrated seismic capabiltiy and the owner decided that there was no need for US $8-10 million of modifications.

Decommission and Shutdown We supplied engineering support for the removal of all remaining spent fuel assemblies from a US nuclear reactor. Removal of the spent fuel to dry storage enabled the fuel pools to be drained.
