Pigment preparations for solvent-based inkjet inks Microlith® K/KJ
In addition to our line of powder pigments, BASF’s Microlith® K pigment preparations are state-of-the-art pigment preparations (high-performance pigments pre-dispersed in a vinyl copolymer) that are widely used in solvent-based inkjet inks for wideformat indoor and outdoor graphics. Their small particle size and extremely narrow particle size distribution, obtained by our specialized milling technology, affords maximum color strength and transparency as well as outstanding dispersion stability.
Microlith® K pigment preparations are easily incorporated into usual inkjet ink solvents such as ketones, glycol ethers or glycol ether esters (or blends thereof) by means of just a dissolver or other high-speed mixers, without the need for milling.

Pigment preparations for UV-curable inkjet inks Microlith® J
Microlith® J is a new generation of high-performance pigment preparations specifically developed for UV-curable inkjet inks. It consists of high-grade organic pigments and carbon black, pre-dispersed in an acrylic co-polymer binder. Microlith® J preparations excel by their small particle size and narrow particle size distribution, which is guaranteed by our specialized manufacturing process. Accurate particle size control allows maximum color strength, gloss and transparency as well as excellent dispersion stability. Microlith® J can be easily
incorporated into commonly used acrylate- or vinyl-based inkjet monomers by means of just a dissolver or other high-shear mixers without the need for milling. Further, Microlith® J can also be used for the straightforward formulation of ultra-low viscosity solvent-based inkjet inks.

Photoinitiators for energy curing Irgacure®
Energy-curable inks and varnishes require excellent spectral sensitivity and the highest cure speed even at high pigment loadings and at low energy dose. The photoinitiator is therefore a key component of an energy-curable formulation, as it largely determines the spectral sensitivity and cure response of the system.
BASF offers a broad range of highly effective photoinitiators for energy-curable inks and varnishes with a range of additional benefits including excellent solubility in acrylate monomers, low yellowing, low odor and low migration properties. BASF also offers photoinitiators for cationic curing processes.

Solutions for digital printing The BASF pigments, resins, monomers, oligomers and additives portfolio for digital inks
Additives Irgastab®
Energy-curable formulations containing acrylate reactive diluents and oligomers, photoinitiators and pigments are sensitive to early polymerization during storage. This is particularly true for highly reactive systems based on multifunctional acrylates, as used in printing applications. Therefore, the addition of an efficient stabilizer against premature polymerization is necessary to provide long-term stability of the energy-curable ink formulation during its life cycle.
Products Irgastab® UV 25
Chemistry hindered phenol
In addition, an antioxidant can be added directly into the ink formulation to protect the colorant and binder against photooxidation, which will also help increase the lifetime of the digitally printed image.

UV absorbers and hindered amine light stabilizers Tinuvin®
Digitally printed signs and graphics are sometimes overlacquered with an overprint varnish to improve weatherability. BASF offers a broad selection of UV absorbers that can easily be incorporated into water-based, solvent-based, or energycurable overprint varnish formulations. Due to broad spectral coverage and very high extinction, our UV absorbers provide excellent performance and photo-stability by filtering harmful UV light and protecting the underlying image against fading.
Products
Chemistry
In addition, the overprint varnish itself can be protected against light degradation (cracking, loss of gloss, delamination, etc.) by the addition of hindered amine light stabilizers (HALS) in coating formulations. Alternatively, they can be added directly into the ink formulation to help protect the colorant and binder against photo-oxidation, which will also increase the lifetime of the digitally printed image.
