3M Core Technologies & Ideas In Practice Innovation in the Mix How do you go from dental work to collision repair? What does a dent in your car and a broken tooth have in common?

fastest

If you said they’re both annoying problems that need fixing, you’d be right, but in the connected world of 3M innovation the answer goes much further. This story begins with a 3M team that was developing products for auto body shops. They noticed that the process for mixing the auto body filler used to repair dents and dings in cars hadn’t improved in over 50 years. The filler was mixed by hand in a wasteful, error-prone process that was a mess – both literally and figuratively. It turned out there were good reasons why the auto body shop workers were mixing by hand. Automatic mixing at the 50:1 ratio required for auto body filler was a significant technical challenge. Further study of the problem showed that standard mixing systems were not up to the challenge. Mixing a 50:1 ratio in a static mixing system generated intolerable “back pressure” on the whole system, effectively shutting it down. The 3M teams collaborated to explore how the Pentamix™ could help the auto body team innovate and overcome technical hurdles to develop a functional mixing system for body filler. The 3M automotive team wanted a process that was continuous and portable, so they looked at 3M cartridge technology as well as specialised applicators and nozzles and devised a solution. Now the mixing was not only dynamic, but mobile, so the material could be applied directly from nozzle to vehicle: no waste, no walking back and forth. The resulting 3M Dynamic Mixing System gives auto body shops accurately mixed body filler on demand while avoiding the mess and waste of manual mixing. 4

Take a spin with the automatic mixing unit & rev up your practice!

A breakthrough came when the 3M technical team reached out to an unlikely source – fellow scientists in 3M’s dental division.

The Insights into this material development and an overview of the benefits of Imprint 4 are shared in this interview with Dr. Peter Osswald, Research & Development-Impression Materials, 3M ESPE. Impressions with Imprint 4

Dr. Osswald, silicone impression materials have been available n

since the 1970’s and have been subject to continuous improvements ever since their introduction. After such a long time, it might be assumed that a material with the optimum composition is already available. Can you share with us why you decided to initiate another product development project for a VPS impression material?

I believe that there always is, and will be room for improvement of any material. The perfect composition does not exist, partly because trends and user preferences change over time and technological progress never stops. In order to deliver products that are tailored to ideally suit the needs of our customers, we are always collaborating with users and never stop analysing which features might be worth altering. For VPS materials, we found that a different setting behaviour with faster intra-oral setting that still maintained identical working times as existing VPS materials from 3M ESPE would be beneficial. In addition, an even higher hydrophilicity is desired by dentists.

But the optimisation of hydrophilicity and the setting behaviour were our key objectives. Different approaches on how to proceed were discussed and the team of researchers developed the basic technologies— one to enhance hydrophilicity and the other improving the setting behaviour.

What was difficult was not to just shorten the whole setting regime, but to reduce time required for the setting reaction in the patient’s mouth, while the working time had to remain the same. After an intensive ideation process and testing of different approaches, we reached the goal by adding a self warming mechanism to the existing formula of VPS materials. The reaction that initiates warming starts after the working time and the rise in temperature leads to accelerated setting (see Fig 4). This property results in a more efficient workflow, increased patient comfort and less stress for the practice team.

How was it possible to develop a VPS impression material that is n What is your conclusion regarding the success of the project? n even more hydrophilic than existing materials?

We know that hydrophilicity is one of the most important properties of an impression material: the more hydrophilic it is, the better is its potential for precise detail reproduction in a wet environment. Detailed impressions, in turn, lead to restorations with accurate margins. Therefore, we spent a lot of time focusing on this topic. Many different technologies and additives were tested, but the addition of the novel modified polyalkylene oxide wetting enabler turned out to be the best solution. This component in combination with our long-term proven surfactant leads to an outstanding hydrophilicity of the material even in the uncured state immediately after mixing.

The highly skilled cross functional team were aligned and motivated. As a result we succeeded in developing not one, but ten new impression materials with highly beneficial features. Due to higher hydrophilicity and a faster setting in the mouth, an accurate reproduction of details is possible. The results of an application test in Western Europe and the United States confirmed the high level of user satisfaction which makes us very confident that we have addressed the right issues for our customers: for example, the intra-oral setting time received high ratings. Furthermore, 80% of the respondents in Western Europe and 88% of the US respondents stated that they will or will probably use the new materials in their own dental office (Fig 6).

Dr. Osswald, thank you for the conversation.

So, you succeeded in developing two new basic technologies. n

Was it difficult to combine them with each other and the other components?

nWhat were the first steps of product development? We did not have to start from scratch, but were able to build on existing knowledge and experience from developing vinyl polysiloxane impression materials. Furthermore, we have within 3M the unique ability to get access to a large variety of different technologies. We focused on the existing composition and determined which components would have to be added or changed to reach our goals. We decided to alter the colours

The two basic technologies were just merged and it turned out that they did not have a negative effect on each other or the whole composition. However, it was more challenging to work out all the different variants of the impression material. A whole portfolio of Imprint 4 products was developed, consisting of materials in different viscosities and setting times in order to satisfy all customers preferences and requirements. Extensive development and laboratory testing involving many different functions within the company was required to prove the outstanding performance of all materials.

Something Else To Smile About.....

Over the past few months, 3M ESPE’s “My Filtek Story” campaign, on the popular website www.FiltekSupremeXTE.com.au, has encouraged dentists to submit their own personal experiences and anecdotes about improving patients’ smiles with this dental composite - Filtek™ Supreme XTE. We are now pleased to share some of these stories with you.

He can smile for the wedding photos! We received an emergency phone call in an early Saturday morning. A lady almost cried when she was speaking to our receptionist. What turned out to be: Her fiancé’s front tooth got knocked and chipped in half when his mates chained him on the bull bar of a 4WD at his buck’s night. The couple were getting married that afternoon!!! “I don’t want him to have a missing tooth in my wedding photos” the lady cried. We quickly shuffled the appointment to accommodate this groom in. Luckily, there wasn’t any Pulpal exposure, so I was able to rebuild the missing half of the tooth with a direct restoration.

We would love to hear your success stories and encourage you to share your personal experiences and anecdotes about improving patients’ smiles with Filtek™ Supreme XTE.

Thanks to the high aesthetic properties of Filtek Supreme XTE composite resin. I was able to reconstruct the missing portion of the tooth with layering technique, and matching the shade to adjacent teeth and blend the restoration to the natural tooth structure. The groom is so happy that he thought the restoration look way better than his original tooth (the original tooth was rotated a bit).

Something to Smile about

Filtek™ Direct Veneers I like the Filtek range of composites and have used the Z250 for quite some time. Then I came across the Supreme XTE. Must say I like the handling characteristics of this material possibly the same as Z250 but could be even better. The most memorable use of this material that I recall is when we did a case of direct veneers for a young lady with marked staining and patches on all her teeth. Of course she was concerned about the looks but she could not afford the porcelain veneers. She was looking for a cheaper option to improve the appearance of her teeth. Knowing that we decided that we could try direct composite veneers. We went ahead and place 8 direct composite veneers using Filtek supreme XTE (with opaqers) and the result we got was really excellent. The material placed in this patient’s mouth held integrity well and did not need much polishing and buffing at subsequent recalls at least for three years after placement. This patient was really thrilled to receive the veneers as it made her smile brilliant. She thought she will maintain this for as long as possible and if it needed replacement she probably will go for direct veneers again. So for this patient very cost effective and brilliant result.

One Friday Night! I was completing my notes one late Friday night. The phone rang at 7pm and I reluctantly happened to answer, to find a distraught father whose son Joe, had completely fractured his upper front tooth at a paintball skirmish game. I agreed to see him without an assistant and to my (bad) luck it happened to be a cervical 3rd fracture of an upper 1st Incisor with most of the coronal structure missing and a gaping pulp tissue. I pain stakingly (without an assistant) Extripated his pulp and wanted to give him a temp restoration. When I was told by his Dad that the next day was his big Birthday party. I took a deep breath (and resigned to my fate) and started to restore the whole tooth with Filtek Composites supported by 2 dentinal pins. The next day Joe was without pain and thrilled to have his tooth back to looking as natural, as though he never lost it ... he had a great party. Today, after 3 years his tooth looks no different and he is hardly aware that it has been rebuilt. Thank you Filtek. Woodvale, WA
