Division of the Wake County Environmental Services Department Provide disposal and recycling facilities management, litter and illegal dumping enforcement, outreach and education programs Curbside garbage and recycling services are provided by municipalities or private garbage companies

Approx. 400 K tons disposed annually Amount of trash has decreased by ~13% over the past 5 years due to expanded recycling services, economic recession, transfer of commercial waste to out of county disposal facilities Landfilling is the least expensive methodology for waste disposal available today ($30/ton vs. $100/ton for waste to energy) Capacity is now est. at 30+ years Landfill Gas to Energy – 3 MWh of power currently, expanding to 12 MWh during life of landfill

Created in 1980’s to offer disposal services to residents living in the unincorporated areas of the County Expanded to include additional items such as cardboard and commingled recycling 11 sites located throughout Wake County Created to accept landfill banned items – electronics, tires, large appliances, pallets, Expanded services to collect other recyclable items not regularly collected curbside – batteries, cell phones, cooking oil, rigid plastics 2 sites – North Wake and South Wake

Household Hazardous Waste Drop-Off  

Provide residents with safe disposal of commonly used household hazardous materials – chemicals, paints, pesticides, fluorescent light bulbs 2 sites – North Wake and South Wake
