SOJOURN COMMUNITY CHURCH Worship Director - East Campus

Welcome to Sojourn Our hope is that this packet will give you some insight into Sojourn’s culture so that you will have a better understanding of who we are and what we are about. The most important thing to know about Sojourn is that we celebrate and proclaim the gospel. Our vision is to see people reached with God’s gospel, built up as his church, and sent out into his world. We have grown from a small bible study to nearly 4,000 people attending four locations. We are humbled and excited by the work we have seen the Lord do over the past few years. As Sojourn continues to grow there is a need for a Worship Director to oversee the music and production for our East Campus. In November 2009, the East Campus was the first campus we planted. Since then the campus has had tremendous growth and has had a huge impact on the east end of Louisville. The Worship Director position is one that requires a strong leader who is ready to step into a large, fast-growing church, who is

committed to being rooted in the community, and has a firm calling to shepherd God’s people. This person will work closely with the campus pastor, Kevin Jamison, the East Campus team, and with the Sojourn Music team.

The History of Sojourn The word “sojourn” can mean several things. It can speak of a long journey or a temporary dwelling place. It has connotations of deliverance and redemption, of journeying from bondage and slavery to freedom. We named our church Sojourn for all of these reasons. If life is a journey, we want our journey to be marked most clearly by our destination–one opened up to us by the grace of God through His Son, Jesus. Our journey is one from death to life, from darkness and shadows into the Light.

in truth, preaching God’s gospel in Louisville and beyond. We’re seeing God work daily to bring gospel transformation to and through our community.

The name reminds us that we are going somewhere. It encourages us to think ahead and look forward with anticipation to the joy of arrival. One day we will finally be with God and see our Lord face to face!

From our Midtown campus we strive to be good neighbors and ministers of reconciliation in Germantown and Shelby Park, as well as a “sending” location to spread the gospel throughout the Louisville area and beyond. From our East campus we share this same gospel message, and same desire to be a good neighbor to those on Louisville’s East End. Sojourn J-Town serves the Jeffersontown area of metro Louisville, and our newest campus, Sojourn New Albany, is reaching people and families just across the river in southern Indiana.

We launched in September 2000 using rented space. Eleven years later, we are a multi-campus, multi-generational movement working together to feed the hungry, restore relationships, celebrate the arts, and above all to worship Jesus in spirit and

We started out as a few kids, hungry for Christ and believing that “Sojourn” is not a destination, but a way of life. God has done more with us than we could ever have imagined. We can’t wait to see where He leads us next.

Sojourn East Campus In January 2005, Sojourn had about 300 attendees on Sundays, which maxed out our rented space at Highland Christian Fellowship. The need for permanent space sent us looking high and low in Louisville’s urban corridor, and after many discouraging months of searching, we found the old Isaac Shelby Elementary School at 930 Mary Street. A donor purchased the building for us in October 2005, and our first vision campaign raised over a million dollars to renovate the space and give us a permanent home. Services began there in November 2006, and by the spring of ’07 we were hosting three worship services and 860 people. The 930 Art Center launched from the new facility, hosting exhibitions

and concerts that serve Louisville’s creative community and build bridges for Sojourn. We established SEED in the spring of 2007 and began mobilizing people and resources to bring renewal to Germantown and Shelby Park. Sojourn began popping up in conversations all over the city – conversations about art, mercy, renewal, and the gospel. By the spring of 2008, we added a fourth service, and felt the strain of rapid growth. Burdened to care for our people well, the elders decided to put a one-year hold on any new growth initiatives: no new services, buildings, or locations. This led to a season of investment in leaders,

and has resulted in 68 new deacons, 13 elders, and a Pastor’s School to continue training men for leadership and mission. In the spring of 2009, work began on an East Campus – a second location to further establish a presence in the city. That location launched in August 2009, moved into the old Mother of Good Counsel parish in November, and hosted 340 in gathered worship on Sundays. Now almost four years later, we have witnessed the East Campus continue to grow even during numerous transitions and renovations. This summer, we renovated our gathering place at the former Mother of Good Counsel parish,

which is now known as Portland Christian Academy, to allow 700 seats in the auditorium for our two Sunday gatherings. We have also installed 12 elders in the past four years to help oversee and shepherd.

Sojourn East Leaders Kevin Jamison is the Campus Pastor of Sojourn East. He is also a member of the Sojourn council of Executive Elders. Previously, Pastor Kevin was the founding pastor of The Oaks Community Church in Middleton, OH, a current Sojourn Network member church. He serves on Sojourn Network’s leadership board, and is involved with mentoring and equipping church planters and young leaders within Sojourn. Jeremy Linneman is the Executive Pastor of Sojourn’s East. His primary responsibilities include ministry and leader development, preaching and

pastoral care, and operations. Jeremy is a graduate of the University of Missouri and Southern Seminary, and worked in biomedical research, non-profit administration, and church planting before coming to Sojourn. He and his wife, Jessie, have two young boys and live in the St. Matthews neighborhood. Matt Friend is a regular guy, follower of Jesus, husband of 13 years to his high school sweetheart, and father of

two daughters. He has been in fulltime church leadership for 10 years and serves as the Director of Kids & Families at Sojourn East. He loves to run, eat Louisville food, and listen to any southern guitar. There are more than a dozen non-staff Elders at East Campus, including Dr. Rob Plummer and Dr. Gregg Allison, two noted scholars who teach at the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary.

Sojourn Music Since our inception in 2000, Sojourn Music has drawn from many musical traditions to craft original songs for congregational singing. Our hope and desire for the body of Christ is a reinvigorated emphasis on music for worship, like others who’ve gone before us who strove to create theologically-sound, thought-provoking, and musically compelling songs for Christian worship. To this end, we pray that Christians and churches everywhere will benefit from these songs, but also that they will “go and do the same,” learning the value of nurturing and raising up songwriters and musicians to create music for their own communities, glorifying God out of their own culture and speaking through the experiences of their own congregation.

Over the years, Sojourn Music has recorded and produced eight albums that include Before The Throne, The Water and the Blood, and Come Ye Sinners. Sojourn Music has also recently partnered with The Gospel Coalition to help produce and record Songs for the Book of Luke, an album featuring songwriters and musicians from churches all over the country, which was released April 2013.

plan to record a new full-length album of brand new Sojourn songs this winter.

We have recently started the process of recording a new Sojourn EP of songs that we have sung in our gatherings for years, but have never recorded. In addition, we

We are humbled and excited by the work we have seen the Lord do over the past few years, and we pray that God would continue to use our music to celebrate the glory of our Lord.

Sojourn Music has also just announced its new residency program and Worship School. God has gifted us with great musicians and songwriters so our desire is to be good stewards of God’s people by training and equipping them with a biblical framework of why we do what we do at Sunday Gatherings.
