Marketing & Management The research activities at the Department of Marketing and Management cover five key areas: • Consumption Studies • Integrative Innovation Management • International Business & Entrepreneurship • Strategic Communication Management • Strategic Organization Design Researchers at the department frequently publish in well known international journals. Often in collaboration with colleagues from foreign universities such as Stanford University, the Wharton School, London Business School, Univeristy of Utah, Florida State University, Leeds University Business School, Copenhagen Business School and the Norwegian University of Science and Technology.

8

The research conducted at the Department of Marketing & Management is aimed at understanding the complex interaction between individuals, organisations and markets. Researchers examine globalisation at individual consumer level and at organisational level in terms of design, communication and market strategy in an everchanging market environment.

International Business & Entrepreneurship focuses on small and medium-sized enterprises. The group has a theory-based approach to empirical analysis of the inception of the firm, its growth and international development. In recent years the group’s empirical work has focused on the so-called International New Ventures/ Born Global Firms. In particular, it focuses on international entrepreneurship, international market relationships, entry modes and business models in general.

Consumption Studies examines how consumer behaviour creates a cultural bond that connects consumers with each other and with firms, products and brands. The group emphasise a socio-cultural perspective in their work. Research is primarily conducted in the following fields: conceptual critique and development in consumer research, globalisation processes and their influence on consumer patterns, and consumption symbolism and branding processes.

Strategic Organization Design aims to develop and disseminate scientific knowledge in strategic organisation design and examine its managerial implications. Focus is on topics such as organisational learning and adaptation, evolutionary models and classical organisation theory. The group believes that the development of theory is necessary when solving practical design problems. Therefore, the research unit strives to contribute to theory that helps identify and tackle design problems.

Integrative Innovation Management integrates the partial approaches to innovation management by developing new methods and creating a more holistic understanding of the innovation process. The approach is founded on engineering perspectives combined with marketing and management aspects. The corner stones are formulated as projects that will challenge the most important issues within Integrative Innovation Management by applying a theory-driven approach to support empirical results.

Marketing, Globalisation and Communication. This master’s programme is designed for students who want to understand how to build relationships with partners in the present global market conditions. The focus is on decision making and communication in international marketing and is based on intercultural understanding and communication skills.

Strategic Cummunication Management focuses on the interplay between strategic communication and management using a reflexive, interdisciplinary and contextual perspective. The group studies contemporary issues of today’s organizations and develop knowledge and provocative ideas about communication and leadership with the goal to inspire scholars, students and practitioners alike. Particular research areas are organizational communication, intercultural communication, integrated marketing communications, intergroup communication, leadership and Human Resource Management.

Strategy & Organisation. The aim of the master’s programme in Strategy and Organisation is to provide competence in contemporary strategic management and organisation design. The contents represent state-of-the-art in strategy and organisation research and practice. This programme is designed for students who want to pursue a career in management consulting, corporate staff functions, general management or business development.

Campus Odense

The department is involved in most degree programmes offered by the Faculty of Social Sciences as business, economics, statistics and econometrics are integrated parts of most of them. Several courses are taught in English which offer international students flexibility. Economists are trained to quantify likely outcomes of decisionmaking and to identify the best course of action. As a result, mathematical calculations and computers are integrated parts of most economists’ daily work. Therefore, it is expected that students have a basic knowledge of spreadsheets, statistics and mathematical methods such as calculus, integral calculus, optimisation methods and computation of compound interest. Students can learn modern business economics and economics if they have sufficient mathematical knowledge to understand modern economics literature. The courses focus on solving real life problems in business and economics. Many prob-

10

lems in the business world are best described, analysed and solved using an economic model. Real life problems are the starting point for building and analysing models, but models are only meaningful if they contribute to better decision-making in practice. By means of real examples from the workplace, students will learn how to use economic theory and economic models to make better decisions. The focus on theory application is reflected in the department´s cooperation with a number of firms in Southern Denmark and further afield. Many students choose to write their master thesis in cooperation with these firms. The research expertise at the department of Business and Economics is reflected in the wide range of courses offered. The department offers a Masters of Science in ECONOMICS WITH PROFILES IN Globalisation & EUROPEAN INTEGRATION, ECONOMICS & BUSINESS, APPLIED MICROECONOMICS or HEALTH ECONOMICS . THREE MASTERS OF SCIENCE IN ECONOMICS AND BUSINESS ADMINISTRATION : 1) FINANCE 2) GLOBAL LOGISTICS AND SUPPLY CHAIN MANAGEMENT 3) ACCOUNTING. Some 100 students attend the courses at master level and many are international students. The full master programme can be completed in two years. The first year is typically devoted to core courses, after which students can specialise in a chosen field. Students only spending one or two terms in Odense are usually given the opportunity to design their own study programme to suit their interests. The department is a friendly place with close relations between students and staff, which means the standard of education is second to none. Most students are willing to put in a solid effort later enjoying senior posts in sectors such as consultancy, government and finance. The department offers you the chance to be taught by highly acclaimed researchers and to build the foundations for a prosperous and challenging career.

With a worldw ide reputat ion for high-quality research, the department has four core research areas: • Accounting • Finance • Manag ement Science • Economics Most research projects involve mathematical methods and techniques, statistics and econometrics and IT tools as well. A number of these projects combine theory and empirical methods. There are seven professors, 13 associate professors and six assistant professors at the department. Some edit international journals and others are board members of international research associations. The researchers publish their work in leading international journals and play an active role in public debates in Denmark. All staff members offer courses in their field of expertise, which means students enjoy an education with a strong foundation in research.

Business and Economics

The Department of Business and Economics covers a wide range of research from the mathematics of finance to the economics of sports, art, and leisure as well as statistical and economic methodology to its applications in business and economics. The department also covers accounting, management science, macroeconomic policy, optimal control theory and differential games. International economics, supply chain management, the economics behind environmental regulation, benchmarking and game theory in microeconomic models and sports economics are also part of the wide range of research at the department.

Campus Odense

11

The research at the Department of Entrepreneurship and Relationship Management has a strong international focus. Thanks to the department’s many global research groups, staff regularly publish research in international journals and attend conferences worldwide. The Department of Entrepreneurship and Relationship Management is a relatively new department, established on March 1, 2005. The department is experiencing considerable growth and has a scientific staff consisting of 50 people and 8 administrative employees. Entrepreneurship examines the formation of new companies, growth in young companies, and corporate ventures and entrepreneurship. The subject is predominantly studied from a dynamicevolutionary perspective. Research is interdisciplinary, drawing on marketing, applied accounting, applied finance and product management. A considerable amount of research is done in cooperation with the International Danish Entrepreneurship Academy. Relationship management: Research on company collaboration, inter-organisational subjects and supply chains is interdisciplinary. Management, control and development assume new implications when studied from a relationship perspective. Thus research develops management theory, managerial concepts and management tools, which can contribute to international research and direct improvements in company management. The Department of Enterpreneurship and Relationship Management houses the Centre for Small Business Studies, a research unit focusing on small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), which form a substantial part of the Danish business community. Its research projects focus on organisational problems and management practices in SMEs. Researchers are also investigating SMEs’ role in relation to the development of society, the formation of new companies and entrepreneurial activity in Denmark.

12

The Department of Entrepreneurship and Relationship Management has a broad research profile based on the following three research groups: • • •

Organization: entrepreneurship, network organisation and relationship management, organisation culture, competence development and management. Marketing: relationship marketing, innovation and business development, and network and value chains. Applied Economics, Accounting and Operation Management: supply chain management, international economic relationships and method development and accounting and auditing The department has several research projects many of which are in cooperation with national and international groups. New research groups are regularly established in the department with varying participants over time.

Business Administration, Strategic Entrepreneurship The Department of Entrepreneurship and Relationship Management in Kolding offers a MSc in Strategic Entrepreneurship. Taught in English and with an international scope, the programme gives you a strategic, economic and organisational understanding of the development, evaluation and facilitation of entrepreneurial processes. The first two semesters you will obtain methods and theories to create, evaluate and exploit new ideas and business opportunities. In the third semester you will be ready to explore entrepreneurship in “real life” through internships in Danish or foreign companies. Or you can develop your expertise in facilitating entrepreneurial activities through elective courses, such as Social Entrepreneurship or Corporate Social Responsibility etc. The master thesis is the focal point of the fourth semester, which you will write under the supervision of internationally recognized experts in entrepreneurship.

Environmental and Business Economics

The Department of Environmental and Business Economics specialises in two main areas of research: environmental economics and enterprise development. A strong international focus entails that researchers participate in conferences and networks around the world. The department´s research in environmental economics covers different regulation methods under varying degrees of strategic behaviour and risk. It also covers environmental assessment, cost-benefit analysis and valuation of non-market goods. The department´s research in enterprise development deals with development of enterprises and with enterprising behaviour. Therefore, the researchers specialise in project management, innovation and knowledge, sports management, consumer behaviour, and marketing research.

The programme is very dynamic due to the small and intimate, yet culturally diverse classes and with a range of international lecturers (with very different experiences and talents), the students are able to receive a truly global perspective on enterprise development, which makes this study such a joy to participate in.” Christian RM Jensen student MSc Enterprise Development 2010

14

The Department of Environmental and Business Economics offers courses for international students at Bachelor, Master, and PhD level. The undergraduate Business Programme has courses that are also open to Danish students. This way, international students and Danish students are able to get to know each other, work together and socialise. The Department of Environmental and Business Economics also offers three Master of Science programmes in Enterprise Development, Environmental and Resource Management and Sport and Event Management as well as it participates in the MSc in International Tourism and Leisure Management programme. These study programmes are also open to Danish students, once again allowing international and Danish students to meet and work together. Furthermore, the department offers international masters courses to students from Public Health and Biological Oceanography. The department teaches around 120 international students each year.

The Department of Environmental and Business Economics houses the Centre for Fisheries & Aquaculture Management & Economics (FAME), an international research school offering PhD courses and workshops in conjunction with other European institutions. The department has recently founded the Centre for Tourism, Innovation and Culture to strengthen research ties with the tourism and leisure industries.

International Master Programmes:

Enviromental and Business Economics (EBE) offers two Master Programmes in Economics and Business Administration.  The programme in Enterprise Development teaches students how to manage enterprise development in firms and public organisations. The programme in Sports and Event management focuses on the special market conditions for companies in this sector and gives compentences in managing such companies. Both programmes combine courses in advanced marketing and management. There is a strong emphasis on the combination of theoretical and practical skills. Classes often involve project work in which you apply theory to practical problems, often in cooperation with local enterprises. The Master Programme in Environmental and Resource Management recognises that long-term solutions to environmental problems involve knowledge from several disciplines. Therefore, candidates that can combine the different knowledge and form sustainable solutions are needed. Thus, the courses have elements from both natural and social sciences. Another element of the programme is to provide students with an understanding of management concepts and theories. The Master Programme in International Tourism and Leisure Management is an internationally oriented programme with equal focus on humanities and social science subjects. The programme is for students who wish to specialise in management in the growing tourism and leisure industry.

Border Region Studies The Department of Border Region Studies focuses on several aspects of regional development, including economics, business and culture. The department is part of the Faculty of Social Sciences, but also includes the Humanities. It is rooted in the unique history of the Southern Danish border region. At the same time, the department has a close relationship with the business community and the cultural institutions of the region.

The research fields at the Department of Border Region Studies range from business administration and economics to regional development, as well as to minorities in border regions. Common to all research activities at the department is the focus on regional development across borders in time, space and academic disciplines and the emphasis on comparative studies. The comparative aspect, including other (border) regions in Europe is particularly strong within the regional studies and within the border region studies. The research is thus cross-disciplinary and deals with development in European border regions, including European integration and co-operation efforts. The regions are studied in their regional, national and international context within economic, political, social, institutional, cultural and linguistic areas.

The Department of Border Region Studies offers five international study programmes all taught in English and reflecting the research focus of the department. Some of them are supplied in cooperation with the university of Fleensburg and the faculty of humanities.

Business Administration The Bachelor of Science (BS c) in Economics and Business Administration aims at giving the student a basic foundation and a theoretical understanding of the problems that modern enterprises face. The program has a particular focus on international aspects of the core disciplines in business administration, i.e. management, marketing, accounting and finance as well as on international economics and regional integration. Electives, the subjects chosen for the seminars and the bachelor project, provide the possibility of tailoring the study programme. The bachelor project is usually conducted in close cooperation with companies or organisations. The Master of Science (MSc) in Economics and Business Administration, Business Relationship Management (BRM) provides a frame of reference giving insights into the value creation process of companies in a broader perspective from sub-supplier to enduser. A special feature of the study programme is the student’s close interaction with companies. The graduates obtain jobs that require a general knowledge of a company’s value creation system and an in-depth understanding of Business-to-Business marketing, logistics and sourcing as management tools.

European Studies The intention of the international study programme in European Studies is to give students theoretical and analytical skills in European issues with a special focus upon the regional dimension. The Bachelor of Science (BS c) in European Studies builds upon core qualifications originating from the Social Sciences and the Humanities. By studying this area the student will gain knowledge of issues regarding European integration, European institutions and European law. Moreover, the students will gain insight into different areas of European identity and culture. By the end of the programme the student will have acquired knowledge of central elements of marketing and organization, and of issues in regional development. Thus, the student will be able to relate to empirical methods and statistics as well as having developed skills in project development, IT and communication. Depending on the chosen programme the students will aquire specific knowledge about micro and macroeconomics and business administration or culture and politics. The International BA in Business Administration and Modern Languages (BA Int.) combines the different disciplines of economics with business language and cultural/area studies. The Master’s degree (MSc) in International Business Administration and Modern Languages is for students who want to develop their skills in the domains of economics and business language.

Staff expertise covers regional economics and policy, business administration, e.g. marketing, management, trade, law, geography, sociology, anthropology, history and sociolinguistics. The academic staff of the Department of Border Region Studies participate in national and international research networks and collaborative projects with many other researchers, institutions and organisations.

The Department of Leadership and Strategy caries out research of utility value to the world around us. The department has created a profile deemed capable of attracting stakeholders in the surrounding community, thereby establishing a basis for close cooperation with businesses, organisations etc. in turn, this proves an exciting contribution to the teaching.

ability. The strategic balance between the strengths/weaknesses (resources and competences) of the organisation and the external threats/opportunities is of key importance to its managerial success. That is why the sources of organizational change constitute a key research theme. Bachelor Programme in Economics and Information Technology Global development creates a need for employees with practical knowledge of the integration of IT and business administration. In response to this need, the University of Southern Denmark offers a Bachelor Programme in Economics and Information Technology with all courses taught in English. The aim of the programme is partly to provide the students with qualifications within the fields of programming, systems maintenance or traditional business administration. The enterprises need employees with additional knowledge of the analytic, business-related and strategic significance of IT.

The Department of Leadership and Strategy is a newly established department in Slagelse, approximately 100 km from Copenhagen. It is a small department with a relaxed atmosphere where teachers and students know each other. Today the department has an academic staff of 40 people and an administrative staff of five people. At the moment, the department is making a determined effort to increase the number of researchers. Management, in this context specifically limited to change management includes those management-initiated change processes that lead to new organisational forms and new forms of management aiming at improving professional practice in terms of organisational learning, innovation and efficiency. Organisational strategy focusing on strategic leadership in complex environments requires awareness of changing opportunities in the surrounding world, organisational intelligence and preparedness, knowledge acquisition and strategic adjustment to new organizational conditions in terms of flexibility and adapt-

Employees whose outlook is practical and project-oriented as well as cross-disiplinary, involving all members of the organisation. At the moment, students from more than 20 countries are following the programme. This means that in addition to studying IT and business economics, the students will benefit from the international atmosphere and pick up useful knowledge about cultural differences.

exchange students and January/June for master students. Students are expected to read all material on the reading list before being examined at the end of the semester. Whilst many courses involve work during the semester, most emphasis is placed on the final examination.

Internationalisation

Accommodation

Education at the faculty has a strong international focus, e.g. participation in the European Community’s Socrates and Tempus programmes as well as the Nordplus framework set up by the Nordic countries. Students are encouraged to add an international element to their education by studying abroad for a semester.

The University of Southern Denmark guarantees accommodation to all international students. All five campus cities offer good housing conditions both in terms of supply and price.

Studying at the Faculty of Social Sciences

Socialising and leisure activities

While many universities across the world may seem similar, they often vary in their teaching methods. An important part of any stay at a foreign university is getting used to these differences. The most obvious difference for international students at the Faculty of Social Sciences is the long duration of a single course. At graduate level students are for the most part expected to take no more than three courses per semester. To a large degree, students are able to decide on their own which courses to study. They are also expected to be able to study independently. The faculty expects students to take a mature and critical approach to their studies including preparing thoroughly for class. Students are expected to be able to analyse and discuss reading material in class. Likewise, the University of Southern Denmark has strict rules about plagiarism. Plagiarism is the presentation of another’s work as one’s own. This includes copying portions of text from textbooks, the Internet and articles without quoting the source and presenting the ideas as one’s own. An important element of a university education is adopting a proper scientific methodology. Thus, citation is a central element.

Teaching/Working Methods The ability to take initiative is very important in Danish higher education, both on a practical level as well as on a theoretical level. Students do not have to attend lectures, but are strongly encouraged to do so. The teaching methods used also require the students to take own initiatives.

Examinations and evaluation Examinations normally take place shortly after the respective courses have finished. Examinations are held in December/June for

Odense is the city in Denmark with most students attending higher education per capita. Therefore students have a wide range of experiences and cultural offerings to choose from. Odense has it all: Concerts, sports, stand-up comedy, films, exhibitions and a vivid nightlife. In addition, you will find a network of Danish students (the Erasmus Student Network) which organizes excursions and parties for international students in Odense.

Kolding offers beautiful scenery close to water, forest and beach. The city is also known for its dramatic history, its varied cultural life and its active study environment. You can find almost any sport and a host of cultural options in the city. Students gather regularly at parties and other events. Esbjerg is known for its close study environment, where students actively engage in social activities after class. Parties, lectures and sporting events are regularly held for students in Esbjerg, and each Thursday students meet in the university bar. In the sports club you can play indoor football, floor ball, basketball, badminton and table tennis. Sønderborg is located near the German boarder and therefore attracts many international students. The city centre buzzes with life, shopping and nightlife opportunities. Just outside the city centre you will find a great number of leisure activities by water, beach and forest. Slagelse has a variety of sports for both the elite and the width. Cultural experiences such as music, theater and cinema as well as full speed nightlife are also found in the city. As a student in Slagelse you can participate in movie nights, stand-up comedy and theme parties on a regular basis.
