Social Justice – Junior & Intermediate The world is not always a kind place. In our privileged society, we don’t always realize the injustices that happen to others, around race, poverty, gender or ability. It’s important for children to understand that injustice affects all of us, and that they have a role in developing a tolerant and compassionate world. The books on this list have been chosen with this in mind. I have included stories about war, poverty, bullies, choices, gender, prejudice, oppression, friendships, citizenship and ordinary people (many of them children) who made a difference in the world. Some of them are based on true stories, some happened long ago and others are about people who continue to fight for social justice today. I hope these stories will inspire rich discussions in your school and contribute to your teachings on social justice. – Maria Martella
