DeSoto County Confederate Monument

Mississippi’s second oldest Confederate monument was erected in 1875, shortly after the Civil War and is dedicated to those who died for the Confederate States. Hernando Memorial Cemetery has the largest number of Confederate graves in DeSoto County with 100 marked graves and a mass grave for 60 soldiers. DeSoto County Courthouse

The anchor of the square, the Courthouse was built in 1942 after the previous French Castle courthouse burned in 1940. Springhill Cemetery

DeSoto County’s oldest cemetery, established in 1836. By the time of the last major yellow fever outbreak in 1878, there were hundreds of graves, many or most unmarked today. Located inside the American Contract Bridge League’s headquarters, this stateof-the-art, interactive museum is home to the world’s largest collection of bridge memorabilia, trophies, videos and other artifacts related to the game of bridge. Big Walter Horton Mississippi Blues Trail Marker

Big Walter Horton, also known as Walter “Shakey Horton” was born in Horn Lake, moved to Memphis as a child and then to Chicago where he first appeared on the blues scene in the late 1950’s. A quiet, unassuming and essentially shy man, Horton is remembered as one of the most influential harmonica players in blues history. His career encompassed playing blues joints in the Mississippi Delta during the 1920’s and 30’s, to recording with groups like Fleetwood Mac and Johnny Winter in the 1970’s. Joe Callicott Mississippi Blues Trail Marker and Gravesite

Born in October 1899 Joe Callicott was a Nesbit native who spent his whole life in the area south of Memphis and is regarded as one of Mississippi’s finest early bluesmen. His chief musical associate was Garfield Akers and it was as Akers’ second guitarist that he first recorded in 1929. South Abutment Recreation Area The South Abutment Recreation Area sits along Arkabutla Lake and Dam in the hills of northwest Mississippi. The campground is located just south of the Arkabutla Dam. This campground offers 80 Class A campsites in a predominantly pine-forested area and a trailer dump station. The nearby day use area includes one picnic shelter, numerous picnic tables, playground and designated swimming beach. Coldwater River Canoe and Kayak Trail

GREENWAYS DeSoto County Visitor’s Center Trail Take advantage of nature and the beauty of DeSoto County Visitor’s Center Greenways Trail at 4716 Pepper Chase Drive, Southaven, MS. The 1/4 mile handicapped accessible interpretive trail is a visible example of the Greenways mission to promote Mississippi outdoors. The trail circles the storm water retention-pond and features native landscaping and interpretive signage. The pet friendly trail offers visitors and residents a place to walk, stretch, picnic or enjoy a peaceful rest. The project is a collaborative effort between the DeSoto County Convention and Visitor’s Bureau, DeSoto County Greenways and the DeSoto County Tourism Association. ARK Walking Trail The ARK Nature Trail is located 10 miles west of Hernando on Highway 304 just west of Fogg Road. Look for signs and parking area on the left just past Panther Creek. These trails are part of the future Arkabutla Lake Nature and Environmental Education Center and U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Visitor’s Center, which is a collaborative effort with the U.S. Army Corp of Engineers. Larry Jarrett, DeSoto County Greenways coordinator, said the ARK walking trails and 27,000 square-foot wildlife center would someday become the crown jewel of the DeSoto County Greenways program. Hernando DeSoto River Park Situated right on the banks of the river just north of Lake Cormorant, the 41-acre DeSoto County River Park, (formerly Bass Landing), is DeSoto County’s only public access to the Mississippi River. www.desotogreenways.org

Johnson Creek Greenway Johnson Creek Greenway begins along Highway 61 and runs easterly along the creek toward the city of Horn Lake. This project made possible with help of private citizens who are donating conservation easements and land to the North Mississippi Land Trust, which will hold title to the property for the benefit of the Desoto County Mississippi Greenways program. Center Hill Road Bike Route The Center Hill Road Bicycle Route consists of an 8.4 mile loop of rolling bicycle route is a great route for the intermediate level rider in that it does pose some challenging, gradual, hills about midway thru the route.
