Annual Conference Each year all of the Methodist Churches in the New Mexico Conference gather to transact business and celebrate ministry. Churches are also asked to give an extra “boost” to certain ministries. This year, two of the ministries selected are the Santa Elena Mission and the Ruidoso Community Kitchen Food Bank. By combining resources from all of the churches in our conference, we can abundantly bless these ministries. Here’s how to help. 1. Community Kitchen Food Bank works to help end hunger. They are asking for donations of: Large Cans of green beans, corn, tomatoes (diced or crushed), chicken and tuna fish Dry items – pinto beans, all types of pasta, Kool-Aid Dining Room supplies – paper napkins, 12 oz. clear plastic cups, plastic sporks (spoon/fork combination) Please purchase only the requested items and place your donations in the box outside of the Sanctuary. Donations are needed no later than May 27th. 2. The April Bread Basket donation was for the Santa Elena Mission (sponsored by Community UMC in Ruidoso NM) which serves the Tarahumara Indians in Copper Canyon, Mexico (southwest of Juarez). $729 was collected and will be taken to Annual Conference (June 2-4) in Roswell. You may still donate to this cause. Please mark your donation “Santa Elena Mission.” 3. Be in prayer for conference pastors and delegates as they prepare to come together in celebration and ministry.

General Conference Every four year delegates from Methodist churches worldwide converge for General Conference. This year, the conference will held May 10-20 in Portland, Oregon. You are invited to be in prayer during this time, that delegates comes together to seek God’s will for all us, and that everyone hearts and minds are open to the leading of the Holy Spirit. If you would like to learn more about General Conference, visit www.gc2016.umc.org. You can also visit that website at 9:30 am (our time) on May 11 to watch livestreaming of the episcopal address by Ohio West Area Bishop Gregory V. Palmer, on behalf of the Council of Bishops. http://www.umc.org/who-we-are/what-will-general-conference-mean-to-my-united-methodist-church

Shredding Do you need to have old personal documents shredded? The church certainly does which is why we have scheduled SOS Shredding to bring their truck to the church for shredding services this month. You are invited to bring your documents to the church for shredding as well. The shredding date is Tuesday, May 17 th. You need to be here promptly at 9 am with your documents to be shredded. Here’s what you need to know. SOS charges $.25/pound and they use a certified scale to weigh your documents. They can shred anything EXCEPT binder clips and 3 ring binders. So please be sure that your documents do not include those 2 items. For security reasons you must bring your documents to be shredded to the church on the day scheduled. We cannot accept documents ahead of time. Please arrive promptly at 9 am on May 17th. You must bring your shredding to the north gym doors (by the trash dumpsters). You don’t need to come to the office; just drive around the church till you see the shredder. You will pay SOS directly. They only take cash or check – no credit or debit cards.

From The Mail Bag “Dear Church Family, The words “Thank you” do not convey enough gratitude for all of the prayers, cards and support you gave our family during this time. We do not think of Lela as lots to us, for she knew Jesus as her Lord and Savior. She has just gone ahead of us to the room he promised for each of us. Imelda and Elmer Veeder”

Faith Walkers Wanted You are invited to join the FUMC Faith Walker’s team for next month’s Celebration of Life, sponsored by Cancer Support of Deming and Luna County. This walking event honors cancer warriors and raises money for Cancer Support of Deming and Luna County, with all funds being used locally. This year’s special honorees are Cancer Warriors Kenny Treadwell and Eli Goedecki. Kenny is a long-time member of our church and a local rancher. Eli is the 3-year-old son of Mark and Michele Goedecki. This year’s walk will be held on Saturday, May 7th, at Voiers Pit Park (across from Starmax Movie Theater) from 8 am to noon. The registration fee is $15 and includes a t-shirt. Registrations will be accepted until May 1. T-shirt sizes cannot be guaranteed if registrations are received after April 5 so you get yours in early. Registration forms are available at the church office or on the resource table at the back of the Sanctuary. Checks should be made out to Celebration of Life. Please sign up to help support Celebration of Life, even if you are unable to walk on May 7 th. In the past, we’ve won the “prize” for having the largest team of participants and we have a lot of fun while supporting those struggling with cancer or honoring those who were brave in the fight but are no longer with us. To identify our team, please ware a cross with your t-shirt while walking. Or come and cheer from the sideline!

Kids and Cell Phones If you have a child, grandchild, or other young person in your life who has a cell phone, you might want to read this article about some apps that can pose a danger to them: http://foreverymom.com/join-us/15-Dangerous-Apps.pdf. While not dangerous in their original intention, many of these apps can expose children and youth to other dangers. For those of you without computer access, please call Claire in the office for a print copy.

Daily Devotional If you are looking for daily devotional, try the Upper Room. It has a scripture verse, mini devotional, prayer and thought for each day. The cover art features scenes from various Bible stories. The May-June cover art is from the story of Paul’s conversion experience with Jesus, depicted as Paul might have experienced it. Regular and large print formats are available on the resource table at the back of the Sanctuary. This is provided at no charge and donations are cheerfully accepted.

In Worship, Ministry and Fun  May 1 – On Communion Sunday we will be collected canned goods for the local food bank (the white barrel in the Sunday School hallway), donations of pet food for the animal shelter (the other white barrel) and donations for the Pastor’s Mission Fund. The fund is used to help people with a variety of needs, whether it is a car repair, medical needs, rent, bus tickets or something else. Your donations give people hope in times of extreme need. One need last month kept the lights on a couple’s residence when they both found themselves unemployed at the same time. Your past donations gave them one less thing to worry about so they could concentrate on finding new jobs.  May 2 – 6 is a school break. There will be no afterschool programs that week. Please remember that SOUL Kids is finished for the school year.  May 7 – The Faith Walkers Team will participate in the Cancer Walk at Pit Park, 9 am. Please wear a cross and look for the church’s team sign.  May 8 – Mother’s Day and our Bread Basket offering for Landsun Homes. Each May our Bread Basket offering falls on Mother’s Day to coincide with the Landsun Homes Mother’s Day Offering. This offering benefits Landsun Homes’ residents, many of whom have income levels below the poverty line and depend on some form of financial assistance to continue to live active and meaningful lives. Providing charitable care is the most acute challenge that Landsun Homes faces. Your donations enable these individuals to enjoy a decent, dignified quality of life. 
