Themes for 2016 & 2017 • High risk ICT innovation • Nanotech, or other advanced tech for manufacturing and materials • Engaging SMEs in space research and development • Diagnostics devices and biomarkers • Sustainable food production and processing • Blue growth
• • • • • • •
Low carbon energy systems Greener and more integrated transport Eco-innovation and sustainable supply of raw material Urban critical infrastructure Biotechnology-based industrial processes Mobile e-government applications (2015 only) SME business model innovation (2015 only)
Why participating? • Rank among the best European SMEs • Get visibility at European & global level • Receive high-quality business coaching • Benefit from networking opportunities • Get support for follow-up financing
Who are we looking for ?
• Single company • Innovative idea – disruptive - demonstration stage (TRL 6) • Knowledge of the market and of competitors • Convincing commercialisation plan • Clear ambition to grow at EU/global level
Phase 1: May 2016 cut-off Phase I: 2005 proposals received
Phase 2: April 2016 cut-off
Phase 1: September 2016 cut-off
First lessons learnt Unsuccessful proposals were: • Too much focused on the project, not on the market opportunity • Without convicing description of the company • Without enough information on competing solutions • Not innovative enough • Without commercialisation concept (TRL too low) • Just trying ones' luck
And if you fail….. …..improve and apply again! Results show that the first resubmission has double chances to succeed!

Fast Track to Innovation (FTI) Pilot
FTI Pilot - What is it? The FTI pilot is the only fully-bottom-up measure in Horizon 2020 promoting close-to-the-market innovation activities that is open to all types of participants
Three Priorities of Horizon 2020 Excellent Science (ES)
Fast Track To Innovation (FTI)
Industrial Leadership (IL)
Societal Challenges (SC)
FTI Pilot - What is the idea? innovation TRL9 fast track funding range € 1-3 million
research
demo TRL6
Reduce time from idea to market -last push market launch
Increase participation of industry, first-time applicants, SMEs Stimulate private sector investment in R&I
FTI Pilot – Key Features • • • •
Follows bottom-up logic (within SC and LEITs) One common call, permanently open, 3 cut-offs per year Time-to-grant 6 months Budget: €200 mn for 2015/2016 (100 + 100) — ca. 100 projects with average EU contribution of €2 mn • Funds innovation actions (70%), grant up to €3 mn
FTI Pilot – Key Features • Allows consortia of min. 3, max. 5 members — mandatory industry involvement • Proposals shall include a business plan (market development strategy) • Impact criterion has higher weighting in evaluations • Future of pilot (beyond 2016) only decided after full evaluation
FTI Pilot – Industry Involvement Industry-intensive consortia from EU or Associated Countries meaning: • Either 2 out of 3-4 partners are “industry” (= private for profit) • Or 3 out of 5 partners are private for profit • Or 60% of the budget (= total estimated eligible costs) is to be allocated to consortium partner(s) from industry Subcontractors allowed but the core must be in the partners SMEs and first-time industry applicants particularly welcome
Why participate? Pros: Proof of your market potential Funding 70% (100% for not-for-profit entities) Enjoy higher visibility at EU level (communication about projects, by EC) Contras: • Limited funding - so what is the key: -Market relevance and business strategy -Impact (more jobs, capacity building, strengthening industrial basis, improving quality of life of citizens, other socio-economic benefits)
FTI Pilot – Planning and Implementation
• Topic = Fast Track to Innovation Pilot (bottom-up!) • Last call opening: 25/10/2016 • 33 M euro for 15-16 projects

FTI Pilot – Timeline
• April 29, 2015 First intermediary call deadline • End of July, 2015 First results from evaluation
– September 1, 2015 Second intermediary call deadline – End of October 2015 First grants signed
» December 1, 2015 Third intermediary call deadline & results of September call known » Next call in 2016 : 25 oct 2016 » No calls in 2017 but back in 2017-2018
FTI Pilot – Evaluation process • Remote evaluation • Panel of four independent experts • Balancing knowledge of industry/technology, market, finance and sectors (selected keywords) • No negotiation (only duration and starting date) • Evaluation summary report (arithmetic average of scores) with a short feedback allowing the applicant to understand what can be improved in the proposal • Thresholds: overall 12/15; score for "Impact" needs to be 4/5 or higher!
FTI Pilot – Ranking • Proposals with an overall initial score lower than 12/15 will not be ranked • Proposals with an initial score lower than 4/5 for impact will not be ranked; For the proposals that will be ranked, "Impact" will receive a higher weighting • Criteria for further differentiation will be: • • • • •
Value of 'Impact' criterion Size of budget allocated to SMEs Number of first-time industry applicants Number of industry participants Gender balance of consortium staff performing the proposed action
