Presents the 2015 Title: Orphan Train by Christina Baker Kline The aim of One Book, One Community is to encourage reading and forge community bonds in which citizens of all ages and backgrounds become linked by reading and discussing the same book. This fall Stark County residents will be invited to join together in reading the same book, attending special events where the book’s issues will be discussed, and participating in book discussions throughout the community. The One Book, One Community concept originated in Seattle, WA in 1998. Since then the number of communities participating in the program has grown to more than 400 nationwide. That impressive growth is testament to Americans’ widespread interest in reading good books and exploring the subject matter. October 20 | 6:30 pm Stark County District Library, Main Library McKinley Room, 715 Market Ave N, Canton Speakers from Pathway Caring for Children will tell about their foster care, mental health and adoption program, a vast improvement from the days of Orphan Trains. Also, hear a former foster care child relate her heart-warming foster care experience and see a video of a Pathway in action.

Roundtable and Discussion

October 24 | 2:00 pm Stark County District Library, Perry Sippo Branch, 5710 - 12th Street NW, Canton Presenting a different kind of discussion where people come together in smaller groups to openly discuss sensitive and sometimes debatable issues. Each table confronts the same difficult questions on how to improve society's acceptance/outlook about differences, safety, the rules we abide by and the ones we do not.

Derailed: A Dramatization

November 13 | 6:00 pm and 8:00 pm Kathleen Howland Theater, 2nd April Gallerie Between 1854 and 1929, more than 200,000 children were sent to board orphan trains, many leaving behind families who could no longer care for them due to economic downturn. Some of the children found love and opportunity, as the good preacher, starting the program, had prayed. Others, however, were selected as servants, without peace or passion. Each story has a different voice; the preacher and the matron; the mother and the father; the farmer and the teacher; the conductor of the train, and of course, the children.
