Goold/Gould Family History

Descriptive List of Files 1. Unpublished typescript, Goold/Gould in Ireland, 1299-1799, compiled by Kathleen Goold Crowell Ph.D.,2005. The document contains 1119 notes of sources for the family's history. Many notes are brief but many others transcribe much detail, eg from deeds and wills, or add contextual information eg, on medieval and early modern Cork. The notes are followed by a record of 'Resources Examined' [bibliography], and an index. 180pp. 2. A copy of the deed of Jamesbrook to Michael Goold on December 24, 1694, earlier known as Michael Goold of Garranekinnefeake or as Michael Goold of Garrane early and later known as Michael Goold of Jamesbrook. 3. Mentions of Michael Goold in the Inchiquin papers which relate to William O'Brien, 3rd Earl Inchiquin. Michael Goold of Jamesbrook was the Earl's agent for a period. 4. Goold burials at Cloyne 5. A chronological record of the Goolds of Jamesbrook which commences at the marriage of Michael to Alicia Rondulet in 1701. Michael Goold had four daughters: Mary married Walter Gould who changed his name to Goold the year prior to his marriage to Mary; Henrietta who married John Smyth of Rathcoursey; Ellen who married Rev. Dr. Barton Parkinson after Michael's death in 1721, and Elizabeth who married Cornelius O'Callaghan, a member of the Court of Exchequer, after the death of her father. Walter Goold also was an attorney at the Court of Exchequer and had an office in Cork City where he lived prior to his marriage to Mary. Walter and Mary had five sons: Michael, the eldest who inherited Jamesbrook and who served as Commissioner of the Peace in 1773 as had his maternal grandfather before him; Rev. Pierce Goold, Senior; William, who apprenticed to his father at the Court of Exchequer and later served there; John, and Robert. Our line hails from Rev. Pierce Goold, who had two sons: Rev. Pierce Goold, Jr. (our line) and Michael. Jamesbrook came into the hands of the Goold-Adams family upon the marriage of Frances Goold to Wallis Adams on April 25, 1775. [Description reflects donor’s findings, the material itself is not all arranged chronologically and ranges over different source and family groupings] 6. A short history of the Munster branch of Masons of which Walter Goold of Jamesbrook was a senior warden 7. Ancient pedigrees of Gold/Gould/Goold

8. Material related to Gould of Knockraha which also includes mentions of other Goolds as well. It is quite clear that Michael Goold of Jamesbrook had business with Ignatius Gould of Knockraha. Ignatius also was the overseer ofMichael's estate and also a trustee in the marriage settlement of Walter Goold to Mary Goold, Michael's daughter in 1719. 9. Material related to the baronet line of Goold, including one significant deed of lease and renewal of 1718 between Randall Clayton and George Goold of Ballydaheen upon which I elaborate 10. Numerous ancient funeral entries related to Goold; numerous wills and inventories of Gould/Goold in addition to numerous other families of County Cork, including the will of Peirs Gold of Douglas which is quite rich; will abstracts; deed records; a genealogy of Sarsfield, etc. 11. Early charters relating to Kinsale; Youghal and Cork City. 12. Goold spoon with the demi-rampant lion which is consistent with Goold of Ireland that was produced by John Gilbert of Birmingham, England that has been passed down through generations of the family.
