South Lake Tahoe //2012-2013 //Ski Lease

What’s a ski lease? A ski lease is long-term vacation rental, where a group of people come together to rent a house near the ski slopes. Unlike a timeshare, renters can almost always use the house whenever they like, yet the ski lease is much cheaper than renting a cabin in Tahoe yourself. Because the house is rented for the entire season and many people participate, the cost per person ends up being similar to paying for a hotel for just two or three weekends. Additionally, each participant on the ski lease can bring guests to the house, as room allows. Guest fees are then pooled together to pay for beer and communal expenses, with the leftovers going back to the renters at the end of the season. The group will use a Google calendar to organize weekends, which is typically when the houe is crowded. When a participant wants to go up to the house, simply add to the calendar which days you’ll be there and how many guests you’ll bring, which will allow other ski leasers to get a sense of how many guests there is room for.

Getting there: The easiest way is to drive. It’s about a six-hour drive, but we can stop at Dan’s house on the way.

How much does it cost? Cost: If you’re coming up on weekends, the cost to join the ski lease $1300 per person for the entire season, which includes deposit. If you just plus on being up on weekdays, the cost is $1025. In a typical season, there is usually a good amount of money left over from guest fees, which is returned to the participants. Last season, each member of the lease received $400 back. Guest fees: It’s $25 on weekends and $20 on weeknights, though it’s $30/night from the evenings of Dec. 21-Dec 31. You can bring as many guests as space allows, but please be considerate. Full renters will always get bed priority over guests. Utilities: Most utilities are paid for by the landlord; we just pay for biweekly cleaning service and any gas/electric overruns above $500/mo. These costs will come out of guest fees. Beer: We have a keggerator in the house, so we keep the house stocked with a keg at all times. The kegs are a communal expense, paid for out of guest fees, though guests are encouraged to bring 6-packs if they plan on drinking a ton of keg beer. Ski passes: Prices for ski passes are the best in years at many Tahoe ski resorts. While early season deals pegged passes at around $300, you can still find passes priced at: - Heavenly = $359, with blackouts. - Kirkwood = $329, with no blackouts.

What’s the house like? Group: We’re a fun-loving and responsible group of beer-loving skiers and boarders in our late 20s and early 30s, all of whom live in San Francisco or the East Bay. Some work in tech, and we also have people in education, massage therapy and real estate. We typically focus on skiing/riding, but that occasionally takes a back seat to having a good time at the cabin. Beds/baths: The house has four bedrooms with seven queen beds and one king. There is also a second living room that has a queen sofa bed. Additionally, we have air mattresses. There are 3.5 bathrooms, two of which have showers.
