Annual Reflection July 2014 – June 2015

The Venerable Mother Catherine McAuley is quoted as saying “We should be as a shining lamp, giving light to all around us.” The fiscal year that closed on June 30, 2015 signaled the end of a year that was truly light-filled for the Joliet Franciscan Sisters. From the opening of our 150th anniversary year, to a Brazilian Sister making her Final Profession of Vows, to Jubilee and everything in between, we have had a blessed year and one which gave light to all around us. The 150th Year

At our Annual Summer

Gathering in August 2014, we began celebrating the 150th anniversary of our founding by Mother Alfred Moes in 1865. Over the next twelve months, and beyond, we celebrated almost non-stop with visits to parishes and schools where we have been involved over the Sisters enjoy the 150th celebration held at St. years of our history. We were Mary Immaculate Parish in Plainfield, IL. also honored by Joliet Catholic Academy, the University of St. Francis, City of Bayfield, Wisconsin, City of Joliet, Illinois and many others. Light was shed on the impact we made on the lives of so many students who came through our classroom doors and into our hearts – a light some of us were seeing for the first time.

Final Profession of Vows

In January, we witnessed Irmã (Sister) Beatriz de Sousa make her Final Profession of Vows in Brazil. Surrounded by her Joliet Franciscan Sisters and her family, friends and parishioners, Irmã Beatriz answered, “Quero (Yes, I do)” and “Amen” when asked the questions that are part of the Catholic Church’s Ritual for Final Profession. Irma Beatriz is a student and teacher at Instituto San Damiano in Brazil.

Jubilee On June 13, we celebrated the Jubilees of seventeen of our Sisters. There

is nothing like the sight of our Jubilarian Sisters walking single file down the aisle of the Cathedral of St. Raymond on this special day of their religious lives. Each Sister is beaming from head to toe, each in her own thoughts about what this day means to them as individuals. Many of our Jubilarians have been educators, healthcare professionals, spiritual directors and social service workers. Some found second and third careers in other ministries. Others are now devoted to a life of prayer and looking after each other.

Let Perpetual Light Shine Upon Them During this twelve-month period, six Sisters journeyed from this life to one that is eternal. All came to the Congregation at different times, sometimes from different circumstances, but all for the same reason – to serve God and His people. They had varied ministries, some starting as teachers and finding their way to new ministries, serving in new and different ways.
