Sister Cities Donation

Marlou Eckert presents a check to the Millstadt Senior Center from Millstadt Sister Cities. Georgia Bruehl, Betty Stark and Fern Sieber are three key dining room volunteers at the Senior Center.

Zion Evangelical Women’s Fellowship Donates Ruth Kuester, Treasurer of the Zion Evangelical Women’s Fellowship recently presented their annual donation check of $200 to Director Patty Evansco. Director Evansco said that the donation will be used to help pay for the electrical repairs being made to the bus to enable the door to open and close automatically. Without this necessary repair the door stays ajar slightly and the cold air comes in while driving. Thank you Ladies for helping to keep us warm!!!

Thank You For Smithton Meals On Wheels Donation We recently received a $200 donation in memory of Kathryn Gay from her daughter, Carol Putorak and her grandchildren Reun Putorak and Trisha Godinez from Hawaii. Kathryn helped deliver meals when she lived in Benton, Illinois. She received meals while she lived in Freeburg, Illinois. Thank you Putorak family for your generosity received all the way from Hawaii.

From Below the Tower For many of us, Christmas means spending time with our families and continuing traditions that we have did for years. I realize it can be very stressful, messy and exciting to spend Patty Evansco time with family members you don’t see very often, it can also be a beautiful time of reconnecting. I read that traditions serve a psychological function and that by repeating the same tradition activity with the same people over the years we build a time record of who we’ve been before and who we are now. I have pictures hanging all over my house of my daughters each year, that we put on Christmas cards, sometime I just wander through the house and watch them grow all over again while walking from picture to picture. This was similar to a tradition that my own mother had where the four of us girls would stand in front of the Christmas tree and she would take our picture. Like me my own mother did it until we were in our 30’s and 40’s. I wish she was still here to make us stand in front of the tree for her annual picture. Traditions help us stay close to the persons in our lives. Enjoy those traditions. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year.

Make Christmas A Little Brighter

Your donation to the local food bank can help a Millstadt family have a holiday food basket delivered to their home. Deliveries of food baskets for Christmas will be made on Saturday, December 21 from 8:00 am to 10:00 am. The Millstadt food pantry is in need of canned stew, tuna, cake mixes, pasta, peanut butter, canned soup, Kleenex, toilet paper, laundry detergent and almost any other donation you can make. Monetary donations are also accepted and needed. Charlotte Mehrtens and a team of volunteers established the food pantry over thirty years ago, when she saw the need for food after becoming director of the Senior Services for Millstadt Township. The pantry was located in the upstairs area of the Community Center until it outgrew the space. Charlotte was then able to rent the old railroad depot at 420 South Jefferson from the Village of Millstadt where the food pantry is currently housed. In the past, the food pantry received government surplus food items, such as cheese, rice and flour, however, the program has been discontinued. The pantry now relies on donations from the Boy Scouts and other community food drives, as well as donations from individuals and churches. The food pantry is staffed by a team of volunteers and now serves the Village of Millstadt, Millstadt Township and the Millstadt School District. For more information or to arrange a donation, please contact Charlotte Mehrtens 618-476-1267.

I remember when I was a little girl to Grandma’s house I would go. The old wooden door came open and closed with a bang “Guess who’s here it’s me.” Grandma always had a big smile on her face and at Grandma’ house everything was in it’s place. The big old blue aprons she did wear and there was a long braid In her hair. Christmas was cookie baking time. All kinds of sizes and shapes she did make, put in the oven to bake. The big Christmas tree stood in the corner ever so tall. Ornaments made by grandma and me, some were big and some were small. Now I have grandchildren of my own but I remember the time that used to be. The big old wooden door would open and close with a bang, “Guess who’s here, it’s me. Georgia Bruehl

National Cupcake Day

National Cupcake Day is December 15, except in New York City schools, which cracked down on baked goods in 2009 as part of a wellness policy. The downsized cake made its American cookbook debut in 1826, says food historian Andrew Smith. Cupcake mania spread in 2000 when Sex and the City’s Carrie Bradshaw nibbled one topped with pink buttercream. In the current TV series Cupcake Wars, dueling recipes feature ingredients like sweet tea and chocolate seltzer.

New Athens Seniors

DECEMBER 2013

Garden Place - Resident Spotlight We live here. We care here.

Thelma Short and Dianne Haas have been coming to the Senior Center for the past year. When the New Athens Senior Center closed in November of 2012, Thelma Short and Dianne “aka Hobbie” Haas found a new place to bowl and enjoy a noon meal, the Millstadt Senior Center. Dianne is a retired bookkeeper and accountant with KellerWilliams Realty a St. Louis Company. Dianne was born and raised in Belleville and graduated from BTHS before moving to Wichita, Kansas. She raised a family of three children, and managed a restaurant. In 1998, after her children had left home, she returned to Belleville and ran a restaurant in New Athens. After retiring from the realty firm in 2008, Dianne began her volunteering career at the New Athens Senior Center. The Senior Center closed in November 2012 when only 2-3 seniors were coming for the noon meal and activities. Thelma “no nickname” Short, was born in St. Louis and raised in Percy, Illinois. She graduated from TriCounty, Randolph, Perry and Jackson counties, high school. Her two children and husband, a cross country truck driver and insurance agent, lived in Sparta until 1966 and before moving to New Athens. She is currently treasurer at the New Athens’ Methodist Church and previously volunteered at the New Athens Senior Center. Dianne and Thelma enjoy playing bunco at Eckert’s and St. James in addition to playing Wii bowling at the Millstadt Senior Center. Both enjoy the noon meal at the Center and say the food is great and a great value at $4.50 per meal. In addition, they enjoy the fun atmosphere, friendly staff, and the seniors at the Millstadt Senior Center.

We are so pleased to welcome Melba Schnellbecher to the Garden Place of Millstadt family. Melba is 83 years old; she was born and raised in Millstadt, Illinois. As a young lady she worked in the Millstadt Creamery that stood in the same location as the Garden Place is now located. Melba worked in that creamery until she married the love of her life, Walter Schnellbecher. She married Walter on April 12th 1953, and moved to a farm in Waterloo Illinois. They worked the farm with love and dedication, side by side for 60 wonderful years. Melba and Walter were blessed with one son, Ralph Schnellbecher. They had 2 grandaughters, Hannah and Aspen. Melba was also blessed later in life with an adorable little Australian Shepard named Mitsy. Mitsy has been a great friend and companion to Melba. Farming was a family affair, but the family fun time was spent playing her fiddle or saxophone with her band. Melba played in bands all her life, starting with her brother, 2 sisters and her dad. She also cherished the time she spent playing in a band with her son Ralph. Melba says that although working on her farm has always been a labor of love; now that she is at Garden Place she does not have to cook, clean or do her own laundry. That makes her feel like a queen. Her favorite meals here are fried chicken, mashed potatoes, corn and salad. Melba still stays busy with her exquisite chicken scratch embroidery; that she displays in her apartment and gives as gifts to loved ones.

Peanut butter and chocolate are always a great combination of flavors. This recipe can be found on the back of packages of Hershey Kisses. Find a young, or any age, helper to unwrap the 48 Hershey kisses needed for the recipe. It’s also a good idea to purchase an extra bag of Hershey kisses for the helper and baker to enjoy. 48 Hershey Kisses Milk Chocolate ½ cup shortening 1 egg ¾ creamy peanut butter 2 Tablespoons milk 1/3 cup granulated sugar ½ teaspoon salt 1 teaspoon vanilla 1/3 cup packed light brown sugar 1 ½ cup all-purpose flour Heat oven to 375 degrees. Remove wrappers from chocolates. Beat shortening and peanut butter in large bowl until well blended. Add 1/3 cup granulated sugar and brown sugar; beat until fluffy. Add egg, milk and vanilla; beat well. Stir together flour, baking soda and salt; gradually beat into peanut butter mixture. Shape into 1 inch balls. Roll in graduated sugar; place on ungreased cookie sheet. Bake 8-10 minutes or until lightly browned. Immediately press a chocolate into the center of each cookie; cookies will crack around edges. Remove from cookie sheet to wire rack to cool.

Senior Center Honors Veterans November 11 The Millstadt Senior Center held a ceremony led by Marlou Eckert on November 11, 2013 the day that marked the anniversary of the signing of the armistice that ended World War I on November 11, 1918. The following year, November 11 was made a national holiday in honor of our nation's veterans. As all enjoyed Veterans Day in the company of their friends, all paid tribute to the brave men and women in our nation's military who are presently serving overseas and are in harm's way. We remembered all of those who served in our nation's armed forces, and reflected on the freedoms we enjoy in this nation that were paid for by those who made the ultimate sacrifice. The following veterans were honored and Estelle Wernle led everyone in singing My Country Tis of Thee and America the Beautiful Charles Worden (Marine, Air Force, Navy) Ralph Schneider (Army) Don Ortmann (Navy) Gene Rinck (National Guard) Rick Coleman (Army) Les Eckert (Army) Bill Anderson (Army) Bob Schmierbach (Army) Tom Kostelac (Army) Darryl Muskopf (Army)

New Health Care Rules Be Prepared. Open enrollment for coverage starting January 1, 2014 will begin October 1, and run through March 31, 2014. After that, open enrollment for 2015 will run only from October 15 to December 7, 2014. To get a head start, you might want to evaluate your medical needs and calculate what will most affect your budget: overall deductibles or co-pays for specialists or prescription medicine. The best copays and rates will apply only to innetwork providers, so you will want to be sure that you are comfortable with your choices of doctors and hospitals. While a large network of doctors and hospitals might be appealing, a smaller one could save you money. Finally, if you smoke, this is a good time to kick the habit. Under the law, tobacco users could pay as much as 50% more in premiums than non-smokers.

A way to look at it is that if you aren’t registered and signed in we can’t send a bill for your lunch to the Area Agency on Aging. Your Help in This Matter is Greatly Appreciated

Meals on Wheels One of the Center’s most important programs, the Meals on Wheels program provides daily meals to people who have difficulty getting out of the house and/or cooking for themselves. Not only are we able to supply necessary food, but the driver delivering the meal is able to ascertain how the client is getting along and share some companionship. We have a number of folks dedicated to providing these services. They give freely of their time and energy to deliver the meals, make contact with the recipient and report back to the Center. The majority of the “regular” drivers volunteer one day per week and most have said it is highly rewarding for them. Lunch Program Lunch is served Monday through Friday at 12 noon. You must be 60 years of age or older to qualify for this program. It is appreciated that if you want lunch you call the center by 3:00 pm in order to sign up for lunch on the following day. When you come in you may sign yourself up for the next day. If you like, you may sign up for the entire week or month. If you know that you can not make it and you have signed up, please call and let us know that you will not be here and tell us when you will be back for lunch. If you have any questions concerning the lunch program please contact Patty Evansco at 476-3731.
