Simulation, Design and Analysis of Brushless Permanent Magnet Motors and Motor Drives June 08-09, 2011 (One and One-half day), Washington DC, USA Topics and Examples include Brushless Permanent Magnet Electric Machines, Vector Control, Digital Servo Systems, Advanced Compensator Design, and Motor Control designs; lap, concentric, balanced windings, winding factors etc. Workshop Overview: Brushless Permanent magnet (PM) motors are the machine of choice in applications demanding tough performance and higher power and torque density. This workshop presents design, modeling, and control of Brushless PM machines. Surface magnet machines with concentric winding would be the primary focus of the workshop. Both axial and radial machine topologies are presented. The workshop is broken down into five sections. The first section focuses on methods for designing brushless PM machines. This begins with a review of basic design considerations, leading into a description of motor, winding and magnetic architecture, analytical and Finite Element methods, thermal analysis, simulations followed by Mechanical and Manufacturing design considerations.

The second section focuses on Inverter design and achieving the desired performance from PM machines when integrated with an Inverter. This section will cover selection of power devices, PCB layout considerations, safety, EMI/EMC, Environmental and reliability considerations, design of control electronics, selection of DSPs/uCs and other digital hardware, algorithm development, example simulations, thermal analysis, mechanical and manufacturing considerations. Under algorithm development, we will cover the principles of FOC (Field Oriented Control, or Vector Control), followed by various advanced implementation techniques for high performance and energy efficiency including predictive current control, decoupling control, space vector modulation, field weakening operation, as well as modeling and simulation.

Under this section we will discuss design criteria based on power, efficiency; drive configurations, size constraints and cooling methods. The workshop will also cover sizing of the motor using analytic and other methods, rotor and stator configurations, air gap shear stress based outer and inner diameters, magnet, back-iron and lamination material selection, loss and efficiency considerations; resistive, hysteresis and eddy current losses. The section will discuss various winding types and

The third section covers control system analysis and compensation – open loop transfer function, Stability Criteria, Type 1, 2 and 3 Amplifiers, K Factor Technique for Stability Analysis The fourth section covers software development methodology and tools for brushless permanent

magnet motors. In this section we would also cover use of tools such as dSPACE, VISSIM etc. The fifth section covers some of laboratory and production testing strategies and tools for Brushless Permanent Magnet Motors. We will also discuss use of LABVIEW environment for testing and data acquisition.
