When you think of Denmark you probably immediately think of beaches and heathland. However, there is an area in the middle of Denmark that looks very different. It has extensive woodland and small lakes that are connected by canals. This area is very popular with yachting fans and water hikers in the holiday season. The quiet areas along the banks are dotted with a number of anglers waiting for the next bream to bite while staring pensively across to the beech woods on the opposite side. Here life is somewhat more placid. It is no coincidence that the small town of Ry is in the middle of this idyllic landscape–and so are our production facilities. Your waterbed is made here in a homely atmosphere by committed members of staff that have been with the company for many years. We call our workplace the "manufactory", as we take the original meaning of the word, "making something by hand" very seriously. Each part of your waterbed – from the base to the bladder to the heating system – is individually crafted under one roof. We think that if you want to be sure that something is made well, it's best to do it yourself. This is our tradition. For this reason your bed is only made after you have placed your order. You may have to wait a little longer than with other suppliers, but you can be sure that you will receive a custom built waterbed that was made around one week before delivery and in which all parts are perfectly coordinated. Important to us and a guarantee for you – every area of our production department upholds strict work safety standards, and all the raw materials we use are tested for safety.
Frithjof is sewing a comfort level F2 stabilisation system for a soft-side water mattress with robust, woven nylon bands. The free-floating fleece inlays are adapted exactly to the form of the mattress and ensure the desired sleeping comfort.
TAILOR-MADE PYJAMAS. A waterbed is always something very personal. The stabilisation, filling volume, temperature–a number of individual parts make sure you enjoy customised bedtime comfort. For this reason AKVA does not supply off-the-rail, prefabricated beds but only specifically–your own special waterbed. You can compare it to a pair of tailor-made pyjamas.

All mattresses are available as either a uno system (one mattress in which the cushioning and temperature are the same throughout the bed) and from a width of 150 cm as a dual system. With a dual system you and your partner select your own stabilisation and ideal filling volume as well as the preferred temperature. A dual system also ensures more tranquillity, as the movements of the partners are reduced considerably.
Heating system Something you are sure to be familiar with–in summer it is too hot to sleep and in the winter too cold. Waterbeds offer the tremendous advantage of having a mattress with temperature control that you can adjust to suit your own personal needs. With our digital low-voltage heating system AKVA VITAL, you have an easy-to-programme, energy-efficient system with day and night programme options.
Stabilisation with fleece layers Fleece layers in your water mattress cushion the water movement. AKVA offers you 13 different stabilisation levels. From Comfort Level F0 (no stabilisation) with which you move completely with the water, up to F8, with which the movement is automatically absorbed. If required the fleece layers are also available with lumbar support. Your AKVA specialist dealer will be pleased to assist you and show you different stabilisation levels that you can try out.

Sven and Henriette Poulsen from Kolding in Denmark are great examples of how sleep is also the best medicine. Sven and Henriette, what made you decide to buy a waterbed?
What is your tip for getting a good night's sleep?
H: Sven was always a "water baby". S: It's where I feel in my element. I've enjoyed swimming all my life. We have always lived near the water. It's always been part of our lives. H: We even met here at the seaside.
H: Never go to bed before you have made up after an argument. S: Yes, that's a good tip.
Why did you decide to buy an AKVA bed? H: Friends of ours already had one of your beds and were very happy with it. S: It was also important for us to know where our bed comes from and that it was manufactured responsibly. H: Because it is something you only buy a few times in life. A GOOD NIGHT'S SLEEP. The Maier family from Eschelbach in Southern Germany
100 happy cows graze on a meadow surrounded by woodland copses, hills and valleys. They belong to the farm of the Maier brothers who also cultivate around 190 hectares of crops. The tractor is naturally also a part of this idyllic landscape, but it is less romantic when your body has to withstand the vibration and jolting day in and day out. With time Manfred Maier started to develop back complaints due to the jolts and vibration and suffered severe back pain. It became so bad that he had to get out of bed every night at around three o'clock to walk around the house. This went on for quite a while until the Maiers started to look for a new bed and found an AKVA waterbed.
"We've slept wonderfully from the first night onwards and now Manfred can sleep through until the next morning," smiles Rita, his wife.

How does a waterbed work?
Won't I get cold in a waterbed?
In a waterbed you float on a large, individually temperaturecontrolled mattress. Your whole body is evenly borne and supported. No other mattress system adapts so perfectly to different body shapes. For this reason you actually lie in the bed, rather than on it. You can specify the perfect position for relaxed, physiologically correct rest by selecting the filling volume and the variable cushioning layers.
Waterbeds keep your body warm, rather than drawing the warmth away. One of the greatest advantages of an AKVA waterbed is its digital, low-power heating system with a night programme. This lets you set your own individual feel-good temperature.
How does my sleep improve? Between the ages of twenty and sixty, we spend more than 15 years in bed. Over a period of 50 years we go to sleep around twenty thousand times. For all of us, sleep is a basic requirement for staying healthy. A water mattress helps you relax and sleep well, and thus improves your quality of life. An AKVA waterbed prevents pressure points on your body and therefore relieves the strain on your vascular system. The even support that a water mattress gives your whole body relaxes your muscles. This is the only way to achieve the right conditions for peaceful and deep sleep.
Is a waterbed good for my back? A waterbed supports your spine and the muscles in your back by adapting to the shape of your body. The medium, water, is displaced rather than compressed as in other bedding types. The mattress doesn't sag, but precisely and immediately adapts to the position of your body; weight and build are unimportant, and throughout its lifetime the mattress stays as comfortable as on the first day. Low contact pressure and relaxing heat support your back, joints and vital functions.
When is a waterbed particularly recommended? The bed surface that adapts to the body and the adjustable heat have a positive effect on your well-being. They are also advantageous in the following cases: • Head and back pains • Pains in the neck, back of the head and back due to wear on the vertebrae, the thoracic spine and the lumbar spine • Lower back pain due to wear on the joints at the base of the spine • Back pains caused by muscular tension or incorrect spinal posture (scoliosis, kyphosis, flat back etc.) • For lying with least possible pressure • Also for those suffering from allergies
Would I need separate insurance for a waterbed? Unfortunately this rumour is very persistent. The answer is no–any damage is covered by a recent house contents insurance in the same way as an aquarium. However, should your insurance policy be somewhat older, we recommend contacting your insurance company to be on the safe side.
Will all the water escape from the bed in case of a small leak?
People's sleeping needs are just as individual as people themselves: some prefer the rocking movement of the waves when they move their bodies, and others don't. To meet your individual sleeping comfort needs, you can choose from a range of 13 different stabilisation levels with additional lumbar support.
In normal use - and this includes jumping around on it - the water mattress will never leak. The high quality, extremely durable vinyl that the water mattress is made of and all the welds are subject to exacting quality requirements and tests. This is the only way we can give you a multiple year warranty with a clear conscience. If the mattress is deliberately damaged, you don't need to worry about a spray of water escaping because the water is not under pressure. In other words, if a small amount of water escapes, it will be captured by the safety liner. And you can permanently seal the leak with a repair strip.
How do I keep the water fresh?
How hygienic is a waterbed?
When you first fill your water mattress with fresh water, a water preservative is added to keep the water free of germs. Because you don't need to change the water - unless you move home and have to dismantle and reassemble your bed - the preservative is added once a year.
The hygienic benefits of a waterbed are many: Particles of skin do not disappear into the mattress, as is the case with conventional beds, but remain on the surface of the water mattress where they can be wiped off at any time. House dust mites cannot exist on the surface of the waterbed and you can be sure of an allergy-free sleep. Every person loses half a litre of moisture every night which is absorbed by the bed surface and therefore seeps into conventional mattresses. In the case of a waterbed, the moisture that collects in the mattress cover evaporates due to rising warmth.
Will I feel wave movements in my waterbed?
Isn't a waterbed too heavy for my apartment? Thanks to a specially designed base with integrated weight distributors, the weight of a waterbed per square meter is far lower than that of, say, a bath tub, cupboard, refrigerator or washing machine. Depending on the model, the load will be approx. 180 kg/m² for a total weight of approx. 600 - 800 kg. This load is borne evenly by the floor and distributed over an even larger surface so that the average load per square meter is even lower.
