Simple Slouch Bag This roomy over the shoulder slouch bag is quick and easy to make, and also quite easily adjustable if you’d prefer an even roomier bag! Featuring a simple applique design on the front, and quick inner pocket, this zippered bag will fit all of your everyday essentials.

Bag Dimensions are 17 inches wide x 10 inches high. You Will Need: ½ metre ( ½ yard) fabric for the outer (We used a suede feel upholstery fabric.) ½ metre ( ½ yard) fabric for the lining Small amount of three different fabrics for feature applique ¾ metre ( ¾ yard) light-weight fusible interfacing ½ metre ( ½ yard) light-weight fusible pellon Small amount of fusible webbing for applique 20 inch zip in a colour to match Copyright © Bag Making Patterns Club 2011. Bag Construction: Please read all instructions fully before beginning. All measurements are in inches, and unless stated otherwise, a ¼ inch seam allowance has been used. Referring to the attached Cutting Guide, carefully cut the required bag pieces from the bag fabrics, interfacing and pellon as required. Iron the interfacing to the back of each piece as indicated in the Cutting Guide, and fuse the pellon on top of the interfacing on the wrong side of the bag outer sides and handle strip.

Applique: Using the templates provided, trace each piece onto a different fabric. The widest piece (our pale brown) will need to have a small seam allowance added to the inside edge so the middle piece can overlap it. This is shown by the dotted line on the template. Using the fusible webbing, (and remember to reverse the designs), cut out your applique pieces and position on the lower left corner of the bag front panel as shown. Use your machine to satin stitch applique them in place.

Handle: Next make the handle. Fold the strip in half lengthways with wrong sides together. Tuck in the seam allowances, pin and topstitch to secure. Topstitch also down the other side of the handle.

Assembly: Insert the zip at the top of the bag outer pieces. Lay the bag front panel right side up, and position the zip at the top of that, right side down (with the zipper pull to the left hand end), and matching raw edges at the top. Use your zipper foot to sew the zip to the front panel. Repeat for the back panel so that right sides of the bag are together and joined by the zip at the top edges. On the right side, topstitch along the zip to catch the seam allowance under on both sides. Open the zip at least enough to get your hand in easily, then fold the bag over so that right sides are together. Match the edges of both panels and pin. Insert the handle before sewing the bag outer together. As shown, (and with the handle inside the bag), position the end of the handle so that is against the end of the zip, and spaced evenly each side. You will need to adjust the closest pin to allow the bag sides to come up and meet the handle.

Sew across the handle end, catching the bag side and zip as well. Repeat at the other end of the bag, to sew the remaining handle end in place. Then sew around the three bag sides. As shown (right), clip the seam allowance where it meets the handle seam.

To make the bag base, pinch together the bottom corners – align the side seam on top of the bottom seam, mark down 1½ inches from the sewn corner point and sew across that line at right angles to the other seams. Repeat for the other corner. Trim and turn bag right sides out. Copyright © Bag Making Patterns Club 2011. Lining: The lining is dropped in and hand sewn in place. Place the second pocket piece over the first, and with right sides together sew up both sides and across the top. Clip the corners, turn right sides out and press. Also press under the bottom seam allowance. Topstitch along the top edge. Position the pocket on one of the bag lining sides, centred and about 5 inches down from the top, and sew down each of the side seams and across the bottom. With right sides together, pin and sew the lining sides together as you did for the bag outer. You will find you have a smoother lining if you increase your seam allowance to about ½ inch, as it will fit inside the bag outer better. Make the bottom corners as you did for the bag outer. Place the bag outer into the lining bag with right sides together. Tuck in the seam allowances on the lining and pin so the top edge sits on the underside of the zip tape. Using matching thread, hand slip stitch the lining in place to finish.

Variation: Although this bag is long and rectangular when laid out flat, it is designed to ‘scrunch’ up into a slouch style bag when it’s worn over the shoulder. Made this size, it is a medium sized handbag. If you would prefer to make one of the large bags in fashion now, simply increase the depth of the bag side pieces – outer and lining. We recommend increasing the measurement from 12 inches now to about 17 to give you a larger slouch bag. Also, play around with the applique. For a large bag, you may like to modify and repeat the design, or just make it larger overall.
