Mountain Kingdoms – distinctly different Truly independent In an age where many so-called ‘independent’ travel companies have in fact been bought out by multi-national giants, we remain fiercely independent with all the benefits this offers our clients. Value for money prices with an emphasis on quality We are not in the business of cutting our itineraries and services to the bone to offer eye-catching cheap prices. We use some of the best airlines, and typically 3 or 4 star hotels in cities. We include the majority of meals and private transport for road travel. We use excellent equipment and appoint well-trained staff and leaders. In 2014 97% of our clients rated their Mountain Kingdoms holiday as ‘excellent’ or ‘good.’ We are members of AITO and bound by their quality charter. Complete financial security You can book with us confident that your holiday has full financial protection. Flight inclusive holidays are financially protected by the Civil Aviation Authority under ATOL licence number 2973 and ‘Land Only’ holidays are covered by a bond secured with ABTOT. Award winning Responsible Tourism We feel strongly that all our holidays should benefit local communities, protect the environment and respect local traditions, religion and heritage. You can read more about the charities we support and our Responsible Tourism commitments and initiatives towards the end of this itinerary or at mountainkingdoms.com. Genuine small group travel Almost all of our holidays have a maximum group size of just 12, plus leader. This provides more contact with your leader, readier access to off-the-beaten-path areas, greater interaction with local communities and a reduced environmental impact. Loyalty Discount If you have previously travelled with us we recognise your loyalty with a discount on future trips. Booking your holiday – it couldn’t be easier Once you’ve chosen your Mountain Kingdoms holiday you can book online, call the office or complete and post a booking form which can be found in our brochure or downloaded from our website. If you would like to a hold a place on one of our trips, whilst you make up your mind, please give us a call to make a provisional booking. This is a no-obligation, no-cost booking and we will hold your place until space comes under pressure or we need your decision. Comprehensive information When we receive your booking we send you a full trip dossier which contains details of visas and vaccinations required, a suggested gear and clothing list and lots of useful information. In fact, everything you need to know to give you peace of mind and allow you to prepare for your trip of a lifetime.

Trip summary The Great Silk Road, and the ancient cities that have grown prosperous along its length, are some of the most amazing places of the ancient world. This Central Asian region is an area of opposites: old and new, lost and rediscovered. Uzbekistan lies along the Silk Route, and has four of the greatest and most powerful cities of the area within its borders. Samarkand, Khiva, Bukhara and Tashkent have been influenced by Genghis Khan, his descendants and all the conquerors that followed. Our cultural tour will show you a country, barely twenty years old, newly freed from the Soviet Empire, a people still proud of their new country and of their ancient history. The empires of the Mongols, Alexander the Great and the Persians have all made their mark, as well as the more recent empires of the Ottomans and Russians. Your tour starts in Tashkent, the modern-day capital of Uzbekistan. You will see the architectural achievements of the Russians and Uzbeks, as well as ancient mosques of the old city. You visit Chorsu Bazaar, where you have the opportunity to see local life in action and see the underground rail system, the only one in Central Asia. These sit alongside some of the oldest Mosques and Madrasahs, dating back to the sixteenth century. Next you travel to Khiva, a World Heritage site. Uzbeks call it their ‘Hollywood’ and it does feel as though you’re in a blockbuster historical movie set. Stepping out of your hotel and through one of four enormous gates you enter a city untouched for 1,000 years; the land of the ancient Mongol empire. Within its walls, Khiva houses over 300 historical monuments and other buildings including mausoleums, a mosque, a castle and a palace. Bukhara is the next stop, and is the centre of the carpet making industry of Uzbekistan. All over this ancient city you will see carpets hanging outside houses and shops, each with their own traditional patterns. You will also discover wonderful blue-domed mosques and Madrasahs, as well as the magnificent fortress known as the Ark. Onwards to Samarkand, jewel of Uzbekistan and the most famous of the Silk Road cities. Marco Polo rightly declared it “a very large and splendid city”. Samarkand is home to Tamerlane’s mausoleum and famous Registan Square. This central square is one of the most visually stunning examples of Islamic architecture to be found anywhere. Also in Samarkand is the Observatory of Ulugh Beg, Emperor of the Mongol Empire, grandson of Tamerlane, and respected Astronomer. Your trip itinerary Day 1:

FLY LONDON TO TASHKENT Depart London for the overnight flight to Tashkent.

Overnight: In Flight Day 2:

ARRIVE TASHKENT, SIGHTSEEING On arrival in Tashkent you will be transferred to your hotel. Tashkent is the capital of Uzbekistan and rightfully claims to be the biggest and most cosmopolitan city of Central Asia. Although it has been continuously inhabited for over 2,000 years, a massive earthquake in the 1960s levelled the entire city and a modern city was born. The city is noted for its tree lined streets, numerous fountains and pleasant parks. In the afternoon, you will be taken on a sightseeing tour which will include visits to Chorsu Bazaar in the old part of Tashkent, Kukuldash Mosque and Khast Imom. Khast Imon is the official religious centre for Muslims in Central Asia and consists of Barak Khan Madrassa (16th century), Tilla Shaykh Mosque (the Osman Koran, believed to be world's oldest Koran, is kept in the library of this Mosque) and the mausoleum of Abu Bakr Kaffal Shoshi (a 13-14th century Islamic scholar).

Overnight: Le Grande Plaza Hotel, Tashkent Day 3:

(Meals: L D)

FLY TO URGENCH, DRIVE TO KHIVA (40 kms) You will be transferred to the airport to catch the morning flight to Urgench. On arrival in Urgench you will be driven to Khiva. The short drive to Khiva is in itself an interesting insight into the culture, peoples and modes of transport in Uzbekistan. Expect to see anything and everything, from modern cars and motorbikes to beaten up Soviet style cars and trucks, and carts pulled by donkeys. The rest of your afternoon is at leisure.

Overnight: Orient Star Hotel Or Khievak Hotel, Khiva Day 4:

The afternoon will be at your leisure.

Overnight: Orient Star Hotel Or Khievak Hotel, Khiva Day 6:

(Meals: BLD)

DRIVE TO BUKHARA 480km, approx.11-12 hours, including lunch and tea stops Today you will be driven to Bukhara which is regarded by many to be one of the most cultural and evocative cities in the world. Again the drive is in itself an exciting and interesting part of your adventure tour. The road was still under construction in 2013, so the journey may take approx. 1112 hours. You drive back through Urgench and cross a wide river (in ancient times called the Oxus), now called the Amudar'ja. The bridge is a series of flat topped metal barges, welded together. This then brings you to the main road leading to Bukhara. The country is surprisingly green and cultivated, though you will also see remnants of decaying Soviet industry too. You may see camels, roadside water melon sellers and more donkeys and carts. The road itself is of a reasonable high standard. Bukhara-i-Sarif - 'noble and sacred' is one of the numerous epithets awarded to this ancient city. In the IX and X centuries, some of the great poets of the East, (such as Rudaky, Dakiki, and Firdousi), devoted examples of their work to the city and it is said that the "History of Bukhara" had already been written by the tenth century, with the first period of the city's existence depicted in the national epics and numerous legends. A branch of the Great Silk Road, connecting China with Europe via Iran, passed through Bukhara. Overnight: Hotel A S L Or Hotel Sasha & Son Or Omar Khayam Hotel, Bukhara Day 7:

Magoki Attory Mosque is of a very interesting construction as the facade is 12th century and reconstructed in 16th century and there are Zoroastrian temple ornaments underneath it. Mountain Kingdoms & Responsible Tourism Our commitment Mountain Kingdoms is committed to responsible tourism, through policies and practices which permeate all aspects of its business. Our policies aim to ensure that we and our clients act in a way which is socially, environmentally and culturally sound. We feel strongly that all Mountain Kingdoms holidays should benefit local communities, protect the environment by minimising pollution, and respect local traditions, religion and heritage. We tread lightly - low volume, low impact trekking/touring is the best way of preserving the beautiful and fragile places we visit. We work with organisations such as Tourism Concern, International Porter Protection Group (IPPG), Ecoan, AITO and various charities, to help achieve our responsible tourism goals. Our initiatives We support a number of Responsible Tourism initiatives and organisations in many of the destinations we visit. Our main initiative is funding English lessons for our sherpas and local guides in Nepal where we contribute approximately $1500 per year. We are also very active in raising funds for the Shiva Charity’s Ginette Harrison School in Nepal and to date we have raised over £15,300 for Shiva Charity’s schools. Other examples of our recent ongoing work are the Simien Mountains Mobile Medical Service, the Bridge Project in Zanskar and support for the Village Education Project in Kilimanjaro. Further details of all our Responsible Tourism initiatives can be found at www.mountainkingdoms.com. Porter Protection In the countries where we use porters such as Nepal and Peru, we feel that the issue of porter protection is immensely important. We support the work and the aims of the IPPG (International Porter Protection Group) and as such we have a set of guidelines to adhere to and which we apply worldwide. What our clients say The route was very well planned and I particularly appreciated the train journey from Samarkand to Tashkent. This was very evocative of the silk route going across the huge expanse of deserted steppe and seeing the small isolated villages. -Mrs C, Shropshire What I appreciate most about Mountain Kingdoms is the small numbers. It means smaller, more characterful hotels, better and quicker transport and eating in a small party is so much more pleasant. -Ms S, Cambridge The itinerary, sights and even the chosen hotels were the highlights of the trip. Exploring Khiva, Bukhara and old Samarkand were really enjoyable days. -Mr S, Scotland The whole experience was super - our group got on well which was great. The free days were a good idea so one could re-visit many places. -Mrs C, Milton Keynes This was an excellent tour - friendly participants, very good guide and excellent value for money. What more could one ask for! -Mr S, Taunton
