Welcome to MetroED! MetroED’s Fall 2014 Schedule of Classes includes a wide range of classes selected with our students’ individual interests and needs in mind. The Silicon Valley Adult Education Program (SVAE) offers career technical education (CTE) as well as Englishas-a-Second Language and basic skills for adults.

Changing Lives!

SVAE offers classes which focus on teaching students new skills or enhancing present skills for those seeking better jobs. In addition, SVAE offers a variety of classes for improving reading, math and English language skills, earning a high school diploma or a GED Certificate. My vision for MetroED and SVAE students is to offer high-quality programs that will prepare students for college and careers in today’s competitive global economy. ENGLISH AS A SECOND LANGUAGE - ALL LEVELS The Silicon Valley Adult Education Program offers English-As-A-Second Language (ESL) classes. ESL Advanced Low Listening & Speaking These are English classes for non-native speakers. Lessons include skill-building in listening, speaking, grammar, and pronunciation. Students learn skills needed to improve fluency, reduce accents, and instill confidence in one’s ability to interact in a variety of social situations. ADULT BASIC EDUCATION (ABE) $40 annual registration fee, per school year. Refundable only if class is cancelled. ADULT BASIC EDUCATION The Adult Basic Education class is offered to build soft skills for the workplace and to strengthen adults’ basic skills in reading, writing, and math. The purpose of this class is to raise the levels of competency so students can be promoted to the GED Preparation Program or the High School Diploma Program. Students may earn elective credits transferable to the high school diploma program. Students have one year to complete each of the three levels, depending on level at entry. The course is non-repeatable with completion required in three years. Computer-assisted learning, individual, small group, and whole class lessons are integrated into the curriculum as teachers engage with their students and facilitate successful student outcomes. SVAE’s Adult Basic Education Programs has been recognized by the California Department of Education as a Program of Excellence. Classes are open entry. Enter at any time; subject to availability. ADULT HIGH SCHOOL DIPLOMA PROGRAM To register for the Adult High School Diploma Program, call to make an appointment for an assessment, followed by a counseling appointment. Transcripts are required at your counseling appointment. Open entry as space is available. Students must earn 190 credits in order to graduate. Because of the many factors involved, the evaluation of an adult’s prior training, education, and experience is done on an individual basis.

CAREER TECHNICAL EDUCATION PROGRAM OFFICE MICROSOFT™ OFFICE APPLICATIONS



To begin, advance, and succeed in an office career. At your own pace, gain knowledge, speed, and accuracy in Microsoft Office Suite programs. Open entry as space is available. Books Optional - $70. Classes Monday, Wednesday, Friday; 8:30-11:45am; 8/22/14-10/17/14 and 10/20/14-12/19/14. Cost: $230. Classes Tuesday and Thursday; 6:30-9:00pm; 8/26/14-10/16/14 and 10/21/1412/18/14. Cost: $150.

MEDICAL EKG TECHNICIAN

This class is designed to provide technical knowledge, theory and practical application of EKG monitoring systems in the following areas: Anatomy of the heart and cardiovascular system, 12 Lead EKG operational system technique and interpretation, Operation of Electrocardiogram, and Detection of heart disease and other cardiovascular disorders. Pre-requisite: High School Diploma or GED. Recommended: Knowledge of Medical Terms. Medical Terminology quiz required at time of registration; How to take blood pressure manually; have your own stethoscope and a CPR certificate. Complete 40 hours successfully and you will earn your certification. Cost: $300 per session; book included. Classes on Saturdays from 9:00 am to 2:30 pm: 9/6/14-11/8/14.

MEDICAL ASSISTANT

This 757-hour medical assistant course is a nine-month program, consisting of eight modules and a month of externship. Each module meets daily for four to five weeks. At the end of the course, students will demonstrate mastery in front and back medical office procedures. Students may begin the program at the start of any module, as space is available. The cost is $1,500 per program year, which includes books. The material fee is $500. Pre-requisites: High school diploma or proof of GED completion. Students may be enrolled simultaneously in the Medical Assistant program and High School diploma or GED class, but must complete all requirements prior to the completion of the Medical Assistant program. Students are required to purchase professional liability insurance and must have current TB test results and proof of immunizations prior to starting their externships.

SILICON VALLEY REGIONAL TESTING CENTER The Silicon Valley Regional Testing Center offers a wide-range of on-line tests for adults and educators. For additional information or to register and schedule the GED on-line tests call 1-877-EXAM-GED or visit www.GED.com. GED Preparation classes are also available through Silicon Valley Adult Education (formerly MAEP). Testing requires full payment for the new 2014 GED Testing Series.         The testing center now offers six computerized tests, in addition, to the GED, four days a week. MetroED Career Technical Training Initiative The Veterans Career Technical Training Initiative is a collaborative partnership of various organizations whose purpose is to provide post 9/11 veterans with career technical training and priority job search services and other resources. The training is provided at no cost to veterans, and is held at the Silicon Valley Career Technical Education Center and Silicon Valley Adult Education Programs at their campus on Hillsdale Avenue in San Jose.

TEACHER CREDENTIALING SERVICES Please visit www.MetroED.net/credential.html for the most current schedule on classes for credentials. As a local education agency (LEA), the MetroED Regional Teacher Credentialing Program offers credentialing services and teacher preparation training for adult, for career-technical education, and special subjects instructors and Supervision and Coordination Candidates throughout Northern California. In 1996, the LEA was authorized to issue Designated Subjects credentials in Vocational Education (currently Career-Technical Education (CTE-5 year), Adult Education (AE), Special Subjects (ROTC and Drivers Education), and Supervision and Coordination (AE and CTE). In 2011, MetroED was approved to offer the Career Technical Education 3 year credential to candidates who filed for their (CTE) credential after August 31, 2010. The Educator Preparation programs are available through MetroED LEA (San Jose Location), Napa Adult Education, and Santa Cruz County Office of Education.
