On behalf of the 2010–2012 Fraternity Council and the Foundation Board of Trustees, it is our pleasure to welcome you to the Fraternity’s 69th Biennial Convention in Jacksonville, Fla. General Convention is an intergenerational experience that provides unique opportunities to meet Kappa sisters from across the United States, Canada and England.

Kay Reid Tennison Foundation President

This program is your guide during Convention so you won’t miss any of the fantastic educational sessions, award presentations, inspirational speakers, the Foundation breakfast, business meetings and discussion opportunities you want to experience. It also contains Julie Marine Leshay the Fraternity Biennial Report—information about Kappa to share Fraternity President with your members upon your return home.

During the next four days, you will have the opportunity to: • Elect Fraternity leadership for the next biennium. • Participate in discussions that will determine the direction of our Fraternity. • Experience the ritual that binds us. • Honor award recipients.

• Support the four program areas of the Foundation through tribute gifts. • Share in a service opportunity for the local community. • Develop lasting friendships and rekindle old ones.

Kappa Kappa Gamma will empower women to pursue a lifetime of excellence. This new vision statement for the Fraternity supports a Kappa experience that provides a context for discovery, development and the realization of what a woman aspires to be. Along with the Foundation’s new vision statement, The Kappa Kappa Gamma Foundation will be at the forefront of advancing inspired women leaders, we stand on the threshold of a new long-range planning process. During our Town Hall meetings and educational sessions, we’ll ask you to share your dreams and expectations for Kappa Kappa Gamma as we prepare for our Sesquicentennial celebration in 2020! By listening to the membership, we will have a clear understanding of where we should focus our efforts during the next biennium and beyond. We express gratitude and admiration for the volunteers and staff who keep Kappa “up and running” so well. Each member of the Fraternity, Regional and Associate Councils spends hours faithfully performing the duties of her office. The Fraternity Standing and Special Committees and the chairmen support the important programs of the Fraternity. The Foundation trustees and committee members tirelessly promote scholarships, Rose McGill aid, leadership training and historical preservation. Chapter Advisory Board and House Board members give countless hours of love and support to our chapters and their facilities. Alumnae associations are filled with devoted officers who are loyal and true. And our collegians remind us of why we joined Kappa in the first place. Supporting all of these dedicated members is a staff at both the Fraternity Headquarters and the Foundation office that is simply the best! Thank you, thank you, thank you! It is with pride and pleasure that we share with you the specifics of our most recent accomplishments made possible by our members’ inspiration and support through their time and resources. Loyally,

Julie Marine Leshay, Colorado College Kay Reid Tennison, Arizona State Fraternity President Foundation President

The Fraternity is in its final year of the five-year Strategic Plan. Our Strategic Plan (2007–2012) has helped us stay relevant to our members, recognize each other for our commitment to the larger world, and expand our use of technology. This progress report outlines the accomplishments of your Fraternity over the past biennium. We celebrate and build on these accomplishments as we chart our future.

Membership News: u

A new chapter, Eta Pi, was established at New York University. Kappa Psi Delta, a local chapter, voted to affiliate with Kappa Kappa Gamma, and a special installation that included 10 alumnae was held in November 2011.

u

Heightened interest in sorority life saw our number of new members increase by more than 900 during the biennium.

u

Extension opportunities were numerous, and each month brought a new bulletin of campuses expanding their Panhellenic communities. We redesigned our extension presentation to incorporate a more storytelling atmosphere, and video auditions were submitted by Kappas. With a newly trained team of presenters using a professionally produced script, Kappa Kappa Gamma has been invited to open new chapters on the following campuses: w California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo, Calif.— Spring 2013 w Chapman University, Orange, Calif.— Spring 2013 w North Carolina State University, Raleigh, N.C.— Fall 2016* w Mississippi State University, Starkville, Miss.— Fall 2016*

u

u

A newly designed Membership Data Form allows better matching of potential new members with compatible chapter women to maximize their recruitment efforts.

u

Audience Response Systems (clickers) are being used effectively, and the Fraternity continues to research best-price options for our chapters.

u

Initiation of several adult women who previously pledged Kappa but were not initiated took place with great success and fanfare.

u

Coordinators of Chapter Support volunteers collaborated with the Province Directors to recruit and support Advisory Board/House Board volunteers.

u

Alumna activities remained strong with eight new alumnae associations chartered during the biennium.

u

An Alumnae Association/Chapter Match Listserv was created to add greater potential for communication, support and collaboration.

Fraternity Council renewed its focus on legacy education, and, as a result, the number of pledged legacies increased. Webinars for mothers of legacies and ongoing articles in The Key brought awareness of the growing pool of legacies and the value these women may bring to our organization. *N.C. State and Miss. State extensions are contingent upon mutually agreeable recruitment numbers to support a new chapter in 2016.

u

A webinar Producer Team was created to support the increase in webinars.

w Beta Mu, Colorado, and Boulder

Volunteers such as Province Directors utilized the online Kappa Learning Institute to prepare for their Associate Council Seminar training in June 2011, and all attendees were encouraged to view the Pre-Convention course on KLI.

w Beta Pi, Washington, and Seattle

u

u

Our National Hazing Prevention Week campaign was enthusiastically embraced by our chapters through campus promotions and social media. We promoted the RESPONSE ABILITY Project, which focuses on the bystander effect—where we see a problem but do not intervene. Kappas supported the Every|Day Hero™ Campaign—an initiative to empower people to intervene. National Panhellenic Conference initiatives were supported through ongoing education to our membership. Kappas participated as Something of Value facilitators; trained specialists provided guidance in use of the Release Figure Method during membership recruitment; and support of the NPC Unanimous Agreements and the NPC Long Range Plan was emphasized.

u

A Risk Management Focus Group was conducted to ensure that Kappa stays relevant in the information that is needed for planning chapter events.

u

Senior programming for graduating members was fine-tuned, and the chapter and alumna teams worked together to ensure a successful transition to alumna life.

u Chapter Leadership Guides and Alumnae

Association Manuals were updated; a Model New Member Chapter Supplement was created and uploaded to the Kappa website for use by our chapter New Member Chairmen.

The “Wearing Your Letters 24/7” workshop presented at the 2011 Province Meetings around the country created ongoing discussions regarding Kappa values. Value cards were created by our Department of Education and Training as a new educational tool to assist with dialogue among Greek men and women.

u

Two hundred Kappa Trainer visits were conducted, which included 14 LEAD seminars for chapters and alumnae associations, and more than 120 webinars were produced during the biennium. In 2011–2012, more than 2,000 individuals participated in at least one webinar.

u

A Standards Team and additional resources were created to guide those chapters who may need extra assistance in educating our chapter members not only about spirit and morale for the entire chapter, but also about appropriate behavior, scholastic focus, financial responsibilities and kindness to others.

u

An updated Book of Ritual for alumnae associations, along with a newly revised Book of Devotionals and Inspirational Readings, were printed and are being distributed here at Convention.

Academic Excellence: u

Our new Academic Excellence Month promotion debuted in February 2012 and included an academic excellence T-shirt design contest, “Take a Kappa to Work” week, and photos of campus AE banners and Minerva cutouts studying with chapter members, which were posted to social media to promote academic excellence. More than 26 academic resources are now on our website for the VP-Academic Excellence.

u

An AE Focus Group was conducted via conference calls to create a plan to assist chapters who have been below the allsorority-average on their campuses for three terms or more.

u

We celebrate our most recent chapter scholastic reports, highlighting a 3.26 combined average GPA with 12 chapters ranked first in academics on their campuses!

Kappa Cares: u

We continue our partnership with Reading Is Fundamental, an organization that promotes literacy.

u

Our chapters provided more than 44,000 books during the biennium to RIF and other literacy-based programs.

u

More than $150,000 was raised to support RIF.

u

During the biennium, our members gave of their time with more than 277,000 service hours devoted to campus and community projects.

u

The KKG Foundation benefited from our chapters and alumnae associations with more than $433,000 donated in 2010–2012.

u

In the 2010–2012 Biennium, the Foundation provided more than $2.3 million in scholarships, financial aid, educational programming, and funding for the operation and outreach programs of Kappa’s two museums, staying true to its vision statement: The Kappa Kappa Gamma Foundation will be at the forefront of advancing inspired women leaders.** **The Kappa Kappa Gamma Foundation annual report is available in the winter issue of The Key each year.

Star Spangled Banner

O Canada

Oh, say can you see, by the dawn’s early light, What so proudly we hailed at the twilight’s last gleaming, Whose broad stripes and bright stars, through the perilous fight, O’er the ramparts we watched, were so gallantly streaming? And the rockets’ red glare, the bombs bursting in air, Gave proof through the night that our flag was still there; O say, does that star spangled banner yet wave, O’er the land of the free and the home of the brave?

O Canada! Our home and native land! True patriot love in all thy sons command. With glowing hearts we see thee rise, The True North strong and free! From far and wide, O Canada, we stand on guard for thee. God keep our land glorious and free! O Canada, we stand on guard for thee. O Canada, we stand on guard for thee.

On the Heart of Each Sister Air: “The Ash Grove” On the heart of each sister lies one key that binds us, The badge that reminds us of fraternity days. Down deep there’s a friendship that needs no concealing, Our hearts it revealing in so many ways. It is here that we measure each day with new pleasure, Our friendships outlasting our collegehood days. And in the years after, with tears or with laughter, We’ll always remember our dear Kappa days.

You Raise Me Up You raise me up, so I can stand on mountains; You raise me up, to walk on stormy seas; I am strong, when I am on your shoulders; You raise me up: To more than I can be. You raise me up, so I can stand on mountains; You raise me up, to walk on stormy seas; I am strong, when I am on your shoulders; You raise me up: To more than I can be. You raise me up: To more than I can be.

Rah! Rah! for Kappa Kappa Gamma Rah, rah for Kappa Kappa Gamma, Three cheers for the girls who wear the blue and blue. Now you can quote me when I say I am a Kappa girl from K.K.G. I’m true The wise old owl who wears the golden key, Blue ribbon gardens grow the fleur-de-lis, Oh the Golden Key, the fleur-de-lis, the blue and blue, Well, that’s for me. Rah, rah for K.K.G.

10 Additional Song Lyrics: www.kappa.org/2012Convention

One, Two, Three Words

Hooray for Kappa Gammas

One, two, three words run through the heart of our song; One, two, three words carry our love along. One, two three words locked by the golden key; To all who read, it spells our creed: K.K. and G.

Air: “Give My Regards to Broadway”

Dream a While of Kappa Air: “Till We Meet Again” Dream Dream Dream Dream

a while of Kappa ever true, of her and she will be with you, of friendships through the years, of days, their joys and tears.

Now it’s time that you and I must part, So take this dream and place it in your heart, Keep it dear until the time, We will meet again.

Hooray for Kappa Gammas, The gals who wear the blue and blue! Check out the smiles on all our faces, For we’re friends forever true. We love the key of Kappa, The wise old owl, the fleur-de-lis! Hooray for dear old Kappa Gam! Yes, she’s the only one for me!

KKG’s for You and Me Air: “It’s a Small World” It’s a world of laughter, a world of tears, It’s a world of friendship Throughout the years; We are sisters true blue, Unity through and through. K.K.G.’s for you and me. K.K.G.’s for one and all, Sisterhood you’ll hear us call; Happiness and caring, too. K.K.G.’s for you and me.

Fleur-de-lis Pat Song

Air: “Edelweiss” Fleur-de-lis, fleur-de-lis Every morning you greet me. Soft and blue, always true, Flower of friendship forever. Blossom of blue may you bloom and grow, Bloom and grow forever. Fleur-de-lis, fleur-de-lis Guard our friendship forever.

Air: “The Irish Washerwoman” “Pat,” says she, “What,’’ says he, “Tell me the truth,” says she. “What do you think is the best fraternity?’’ “Oh,’’ says he “That’s easy, easy to see,” says he, “Nothing is better than K.K.G.” O, Kappa, Kappa Kappa Gamma, I’m so happy that I am a Kappa, Kappa Kappa Gamma, Nobody knows how happy I am.
