Shannonside Milk Products Limited IPPC Application Non Technical Summary

Non technical Summary

Shannonside Milk Products Limited occupies approximately 5 hectare site, located on the Dublin Road, 0.5 miles east of Ballaghaderreen. A site map is presented in Attachment B of this application. The site is split into two sections, an independent processing facility and treatment plant. This treatment plant discharges effluent to the River Lung. The site was initially developed in 1971. This was expanded to include a second drier in 1977. The site has grown over the years through expansion of production capacity, diversification of products and processes. The range of products manufactured on site includes milk and nonmilk based food ingredients. Production activities are 24 hours a day, 7 days a week during peak production at the installation. This period would be in the region of 240 days/ per year. The site remains open during off peak periods, however production is significantly reduced. There are 65 employees operating on site during peak production.

The main emissions to atmosphere on site are the boilers and dryers. There are two boilers on site, one in continuous operation with the second used as a standby. There are two dryers creating emissions of particulate to atmosphere. These have cyclone filters attached as abatement. An extension to the site will include another emission point with baghouse filter technology employed as abatement. A summary of the main emissions to atmosphere is provided in table 1:

Control and Abatement Systems Employed

The ring drier and spray drier have been fitted with cyclone abatement systems. The ring drier has 2 whilst the spray drier was fitted with 5. A2-3 will be fitted with a bag filter when it comes into operation in 2007. A2.3

Boiler Details

There were 2 boilers on site. The main boiler operates 24/7 during peak production, consuming heavy fuel oil. The second boiler was a standby, which would only be operated if there was a problem, more steam was required or the main boiler needed a service. This also burns heavy fuel oil.

Shannonside Milk Products Limited IPPC Application Non Technical Summary

Fugitive Emissions

There are no fugitive emissions of any significance at the plant. The only potential fugitive emissions determined may be odours from the wastewater treatment plant. A2.5

Assessment of Impact of Atmospheric Emissions

There has not as yet been any dispersion modelling carried out on emissions from Shannonside Co-Op. It is proposed that this will be carried out before publication of an IPPC licence. A3

Emissions to Water

A3-1

Treated Waste water

All process emissions and impervious areas were collected in the wastewater drainage system. Surface water from process areas that could potentially be contaminated are also collected and diverted to the waste water system. Process water arises from production areas, boiler blow down, tanker cleaning, CIP, etc.
