Systems Overview GULLY DRAINAGE

ACO Building Drainage gullies represent the cumulation of many years practical experience and design know-how in stainless steel fabrication technologies. Our state of the art European plants produce products of consistent outstanding quality but with economic benefits that can only be realised through the most advanced manufacturing methods. All the systems featured here are manufactured in austenitic stainless steel grades 304 or 316 and are fully pickle passivated in order to ensure corrosion free product. Their design includes for smooth bowl shaped structures to minimise possible siltation, and all include an integral foul air trap.

The four systems present the designer and installer with literally hundreds of ‘off the shelf’ product combinations to meet nearly every conceivable need or application. However should our range not meet your requirements we have a considerable capacity for bespoke design and manufacture: tundishes, extra inlets, extended bodies or spigots and non-standard outlet sizes can all be accommodated, but please allow extra lead time. The gully systems fall into four main categories: Micro Floor Gullies; EG150 Eurogully; Fixed Height Eurogully and Telescopic Eurogully systems. Each have particular benefits which are summarised briefly here with in depth description and full feature and benefit listings in their relevant sections.

System Overview FOUL AIR TRAPS

The foul air trap prevents foul air passing back through the gully from stagnant or dirty water within the connecting pipework. The water level is maintained in the gullies by means of weirs formed by the trap unit fitted in the gully body. These are fully removable to allow rodding of the connecting pipework and easy cleaning of the gully body.

MG Micro Floor Gully System The foul air trap is an integral part of the grating and allows full rodding access to the drainage pipework and eradicates the need for additional rodding eyes.

Vertical Gully

EG150 Gully System A removable in-line foul air trap is fitted as standard. This facilitates efficient access for rodding and jetting.

Telescopic Eurogullies SYSTEM OVERVIEW

EG200T

With integral foul air trap

EG250T EG300T

The Telescopic Eurogullies are produced in a number of versions suitable for different flow rates, grating sizes and body and spigot outlet diameters to suit various applications.

1

Perforated (RPER)*

2 3

4 5

Flow Rates 2.8 to 6.5 l/s, FACTA Load Classes A and C

With the same features as the Fixed Height Eurogully range the Telescopic Eurogully has the added advantage of invert adjustability. Refer to page 39 for further details. The gullies can be installed as free-standing units or as channel outlets in a variety of floor types. The gullies are manufactured from 2 and 3mm thick austenitic stainless steel Grades 304 or 316 to EN 10088. Eurogullies are pickle passivated to ensure corrosion free joints. 1

Grating and cover options are available in Facta Load Classes A and C.

2

Optional sieve or basket collects debris effectively.

3

5mm solid edge provides strength and durability capable of withstanding heavy loading conditions.

4

The height adjustable levelling feet make installation quick and easy.

6

5

Telescopic gully top provides limited variable invert capability.

7 6

The gullies are supplied complete with a one piece foul air trap. The foul air traps, both on the horizontal and vertical gullies, are completely removable to allow rodding access to the

8

connecting pipework for easy cleaning and maintenance. 7

The foul air trap seal depth of 70mm exceeds the requirements of Euronorm BS EN 1253.

9

8

Optional plastic drainage ring is available to drain sub-surface water into gully where a damp proof membrane is used.

10

9

Optional double clamping flange to clamp damp proof membrane.

11

26

10 All flange plates have pre-drilled holes for easy screw fixing. 11 Deep rounded bodies to deter silt and debris collecting in the corners and makes cleaning easy.

Telescopic Eurogullies SYSTEM OVERVIEW

12 Horizontal basket collects debris effectively.

1

13 Eurogullies are pressed to achieve a smooth transition from the square seating shape for the grating to the round body and to prevent

Plain Mesh (PL)*

sediment build up in the flange area. 14 The gully top has a channel edge detail of 15mm providing an attractive finish and will accept ACO VinylSeal® (see page 42).

12

15 Electrical earthing point is provided as standard on every gully body. 16 The height adjustable levelling feet make installation quick and easy. 17 A rubber ‘O’-ring provides a seal between the gully body and gully top. 18 Chamfered spigot outlets allow easy push fit connection onto existing drainage pipes.

13

19 Ø110 and Ø160mm spigot outlets are available.

Installation ACO VINYL SEAL®

Sealing vinyl sheet flooring to drainage channels and gullies Vinyl sheet is a common flooring finish in many of the areas where stainless steel drainage channels and gullies are required. Previously the standard method of jointing the two was by a mechanical clamping system.

Cut the ACO Building Drainage Vinyl Seal® rigid PVC co-extrusion to the required lengths to fit exactly round all edges of the assembled channel – do not forget to allow for the mitred ends. Cut and notch the extrusion to form internal and external mitres as required.

Although functional, this mechanical clamping mechanism can be cumbersome to fit and increase the potential areas for bacterial growth. In order to overcome the frequently encountered problems of achieving watertight and bacteria free seals, ACO have developed the ACO Building Drainage Vinyl Seal a unique solution that will enable quick, easy and economical installation. ACO Building Drainage Vinyl Seal® provides a completely watertight and bacteria free seal. It can be also easily removed and re-sealed when the vinyl is replaced or refurbished without the need to disturb the channel or supporting detail in any way.

Press the rigid extrusion into the recess at the edge of the channel ensuring it is pushed fully home. Peel back the fabric tape protecting the channel edge in preparation for fitting the flexible PVC seal.

This method of sealing requires no additional tools or skills than those required for the professional fitting of vinyl sheet flooring, making the installation quick, easy and economical. The seal is significantly more cost effective than the traditional mechanical type and is designed to fit ACO Building Drainage stainless steel drainage channels.

42

Press the flexible PVC seal into position between the stainless steel channel and rigid PVC extrusion making sure that the concave section of the seal faces TOWARDS the channel edge and that the groove in the flexible seal engages with the notch on the rigid extrusion (it may help to lubricate the flexible seal when inserting using a soapy solution). For an even finish roll the flexible seal in to position using a small decorators roller.

Installation ACO VINYL SEAL®

Ensure the assembled ridged and flexible Vinyl Seal® sits square and horizontal in the channel

Grout any voids at connecting rigid PVC joins at mitred corners, straight joints or fixings to ensure a continuous supported floor finish. Prior to laying the vinyl sheet flooring, peel the protective film from the rigid extrusion (a knife may be required to cut the film adjacent to the flexible seal) and ensure all surfaces are clean and dry.

detail Install the channel into the ground ensuring that the flooring screed is flush to the top edge of the rigid PVC extrusion. Protect the channel and seal assembly from splashes of concrete/screed.

When preparing the vinyl sheet material and floor surface, apply a compatible adhesive also to the top surface of the rigid PVC extrusion for example, Altrofix 19 two-part water resistant eurethane adhesive taking care not to apply adhesive to the flexible seal. This is to ensure the vinyl sheet floor is reliably anchored over its full area. Cut/lay the sheet flooring against the flexible seal edge and prepare the welded joint between the flexible seal and vinyl sheet flooring as normal by scoring the sheet/seal joint to approximately half the depth of the sheet flooring thickness.

Depending upon the installation, additional suitable fixings may be required to secure the rigid extrusion to the floor substrate. If this should be required, separately drill and countersink the rigid extrusion making sure that all fixings are finished flush with the top of the extrusion.

Either in-colour or black welding filler rod may be used to weld the joint. Remove surplus weld material from the joint using a spatula when the welded joint has cooled.

43

Installation CARE AND MAINTENANCE

Although robust, all grades of stainless steel will stain and discolour due to surface deposits and, as such, can never be accepted as completely maintenance free. In order to achieve maximum corrosion resistance, the surface of the stainless steel must be kept clean. Provided the grade of stainless steel and the surface finish are correctly selected, and cleaning schedules carried out on a regular basis, excellent performance and long service life are assured.

Maintenance Programme

Factors Affecting Maintenance

With care taken during fabrication and installation, cleaning before handing over to the client should present no special problems, although more attention may be required if the installation period has been prolonged.

Surface contamination and the formation of deposits must be prevented in order to maintain a durable and hygienic surface.

Where surface contamination is suspected, immediate attention to cleaning after site fixing will encourage a trouble free product.

These deposits may be minute particles of iron or rust from other sources used on the building of new premises and not removed until after the stainless steel drainage products have been installed. Wire brushes and wire wool must not be used to remove marks and cement spillages as this will only serve to introduce iron impurities to the material surface. Care must also be taken when storing, erecting or cutting carbon steel near to stainless steel.

Food and beverage handling, pharmaceutical and chemical industry applications require extremely high levels of cleanliness applicable to each industry.

Industrial and even naturally occurring atmospheric conditions can produce deposits which can be equally corrosive, e.g. salt deposits from marine conditions. The working environment can offer more aggressive conditions, for example the high humidity found in swimming pools increases the speed of discolouration and therefore requires maintenance on a more frequent basis. Modern processes use many cleaners, sterilisers and bleaches for hygienic purposes. All these proprietary solutions, when used in accordance with makers instructions are safe, but if used incorrectly (e.g.warm or concentrated) can cause discolouration and corrosion on the surface of any quality of stainless steel.

44

Strong acid solutions are sometimes used to clean masonry and tiling of buildings but they should never be permitted to come into contact with metals, including stainless steel. If this should happen the acid solution must be removed immediately by copious applications of water.

Advice is often sought concerning the frequency of cleaning stainless steel and the answer is quite simple: clean the metal when it is dirty in order to restore its original appearance. This may vary from once to four times a year for external applications or it may be once a day for an item in hygienic or aggressive situations. Frequency and cost of cleaning is lower with stainless steel than with many other materials, and will often outweigh the initial higher cost of this superior product.

Installation CARE AND MAINTENANCE

Cleaning Methods

Conclusion

Stainless steel is easy to clean. Washing with soap or a mild detergent and warm water followed by a clear water rinse is usually quite adequate for many industrial applications. An enhanced aesthetic appearance will be achieved if the cleaned surface is finally wiped dry.

If all the suggestions and actions in the table below have been attempted, stainless steel has the facility to be mechanically cleaned by specialists on site. Please contact ACO Building Drainage for further assistance.

Precautions Acids should only be used for on-site cleaning when all other methods have been proved unsatisfactory. Rubber gloves should be used and care taken to see that acid cleaners are not spilt over adjacent areas. Special precautions are necessary with oxalic acid. Solvents should not be used in closed places without adequate ventilation. Smoking must be avoided when using solvent. Manufacturer’s directions should be followed. Stainless Steel FAMILIES

Stainless steel is the name given to a wide range of steels which have the characteristics of greatly enhanced corrosion resistance over conventional mild and low alloy steels. The enhanced corrosion resistance of stainless steel essentially comes from the addition of at least 11% chromium, however most stainless steels commonly used contain around 18% chromium. Other significant alloying elements include nickel and for superior corrosion resistant properties, molybdenum. For ACO Building Drainage applications, the principal properties of stainless steel may be summarised as follows:

Durable and corrosion resistant in highly aggressive environments.

Hygienic, easily cleaned surfaces.

Aesthetically attractive surface finish.

Good forming and fabrication characteristics.

Excellent strength and resistance to oxidisation at high temperatures.

All of which make stainless steel an obvious first choice material for demanding applications.

Stainless Steel Families Stainless steel is used across a wide spectrum of engineering applications and this has led to the development of the vast range of different types of stainless steels that are now available. There are four main grades of stainless steel: Austenitic Stainless Steels This group of stainless steels is the most widely used and encompasses the generic 304 and 316 grades of material. These materials are used in the ACO Building Drainage manufacturing process and are ideal for applications including food processing, dairy, brewing, pharmaceutical, chemical and petrochemical industries. 304 grade stainless steels contain around 18% chromium and 10% nickel and provides excellent corrosion resistance. For applications where superior corrosion resistance properties are required under extreme conditions particularly where chlorides are involved, 316 grade stainless steels are used and contain around 17% chromium, 12% nickel and 2.2% molybdenum. Unlike all other grades of stainless steels, austenitic grades are non-magnetic and as a consequence magnetic particles are not attracted to the system surfaces which otherwise would encourage both contamination and corrosion. Ferritic Stainless Steels Ferritic stainless steels have inferior corrosion resistance properties compared to austenitic 304 and 316 grades and are used in less demanding applications such as domestic appliance and motor car trim. This grade of stainless steel is slightly more brittle when compared to austenitic grades. Ferritic steels contain between 11.5% and 16.5% chromium and less than 0.5% nickel. This group of steels are magnetic and will attract particulates which can cause contamination problems. Ferritic steels are not suitable for drainage products.

46

Stainless Steel FAMILIES AND CORROSION RESISTANCE

Martensitic Stainless Steels Martensitic steels are magnetic and have the highest strength of the groups of stainless steels, however they also have the poorest corrosion resistance. They can be hardened by heat treatment and generally find their main application in cutlery manufacture. Martensitic steels contain around 12.5% chromium and contain a relatively high carbon content of 0.3% (austenitic and ferritic steels contain around 0.02% and 0.04% carbon respectively). Martensitic steels’ poor corrosion resistance make them unsuitable for drainage applications. Duplex Stainless Steels Duplex stainless steels have an effective austenitic/ferritic structure and are characterised by good corrosion resistance, high strength and in particular, good resistance to stress corrosion cracking. Duplex steels contain around 22% chromium, 5.5% nickel, 3% molybdenum and 0.02% carbon. This group of steels are magnetic and will attract particulates which can cause contamination problems and therefore are unsuitable for drainage applications.

Stainless Steel Corrosion Resistance The single most important property of stainless steels and the reason for their existence and widespread use, is their natural corrosion resistance. In spite of their name, stainless steels can both ‘stain’ and corrode if used incorrectly. The reason for the good corrosion properties is due to the formation of a very thin, invisible oxide film that forms on the surface of the material in oxidising environments such as the atmosphere and water.

This film is a chromium-rich oxide which protects the steel from attack in aggressive environments. As chromium is added to a steel, a rapid reduction in the corrosion rate is observed because of this protective film. In order to obtain a compact and continuous passive film, a chromium content of at least 11% is required. Passivity increases fairly rapidly with increasing chromium content up to about 17% chromium. The most important alloying element is therefore chromium, but a number of other elements including nickel, molybdenum and nitrogen also contribute to the corrosion resistance properties of stainless steels. Other alloying elements may also be added to enhance the corrosion resistance in particular environments. Stainless steels must oxidise in order to form the passive, chromium-rich oxide film. Stainless steels have a very strong tendency to passivate and only a small amount of oxidising agents are needed for passivation - air and water are sufficient to passivate stainless steels and indeed, this oxide film is spontaneously regenerated when exposed to oxygen. An important factor to note is that the passive film is self-healing, so when the material is cut or machined or, should chemical or mechanical damage occur, the passive film will ‘heal’ or repassivate in oxidising environments - unlike a painted finish on mild steel. Selection of the correct grade of material for each application is an important factor in the design process. It is important to note that even 316 grades of stainless steel are not immune to all kinds of chemical attack; use with reducing solutions, such as hydrochloric and oxalic acids particularly when in concentrated and/or hot form, requires careful consideration. See material resistance chart on pages 8 and 9.

47

Stainless Steel FINISHING PROCESSES

Stainless Steel Finishing Processes A stainless steel finish should appear clean, smooth and faultless. This is obvious when the steel is used for such purposes demanding stringent hygiene or decorative trim applications, but a fine surface finish is also crucial in respect to its corrosion resistant properties. The corrosion resistance properties of stainless steel are achieved by the spontaneous formation of a very thin chromium-rich oxide layer over the surface of the material. Unfortunately, surface defects and imperfections introduced during the manufacturing process may drastically disturb the self healing process of the passive layer and subsequently reduce the corrosion resistance of the material. In the manufacturing process it is the welding that creates the greatest challenge to corrosion resistance. All ACO Building Drainage products are subjected to specialised treatment to ensure the material retains the maximum resistance to corrosion. Pickle Passivation Plant

Untreated Stainless Steel The blue oxide film has substantially reduced corrosion resistance.

After welding stainless steel, a bluish high temperature oxide film can be seen which has substantially inferior corrosion protection properties compared to the original passive layer. Immediately beneath this blue oxide film is a thin layer of chromium depleted metal which makes the metal surface susceptible to corrosion. Post weld treatment is, therefore, very important to restore the corrosion protection properties and is effectively achieved by removing the blue high temperature oxide film and chromium depleted layer to restore the surface of the material. This ‘cleaning’ is essentially a controlled corrosion process using chemicals, this will restore not only its original corrosion resistance performance but also the high quality aesthetics. The chemical processing methods used in the ACO Building Drainage process are summarised as follows:

ACO resources include the largest pickle passivation plant in Europe

48

Stainless Steel FINISHING PROCESSES

Pickle Passivation

Electropolishing

The standard ACO Building Drainage manufacturing process uses the pickle passivation chemical finishing process to restore the products to their full optimum corrosion resistant state without damaging the surface finish. This is considered the best method for cleaning welded joints.

Electropolishing is ideal for producing a uniform, highly reflective lustre with an extremely smooth finish even on the most complex product contours. This is a well proven method of polishing and is achieved by an electro-chemical process which is essentially the reverse of electroplating.

Pickle passivation is a two-phase process.

Electropolishing. Pickle Passivation Process.

Electropolishing further enhances surface smoothness and provides a brighter surface appearance.

Pickle Passivation restores corrosion resistance properties fully.

Pickling removes both the bluish high temperature oxide film and the chromium depleted layer and is achieved by placing the components in a pickling bath containing a mixture of nitric acid and hydrofluoric acid. The second phase is passivation and in many ways is similar to the pickling process. For this process the components are placed in a bath containing nitric acid only. This treatment strengthens the passive layer and also removes any iron impurities that may have become embedded in the surface of the stainless steel during the manufacturing process. This treatment is important where mechanical cleaning of the components has taken place with the use of wire brushes, grinding wheels and files where iron particles from other materials may contaminate the stainless steel surface.

The components are immersed in a bath of electrolyte containing phosphoric acid where the components become the anode of a direct current electrical circuit. The process is characterised by the selective attack on the surface of the components whereby upstanding roughnesses are preferentially dissolved and will yield a progressively smoother, brighter surface. For pharmaceutical and food processing industries, bacterial resistance is considerably improved by the electropolishing process. Certain gratings within the ACO Building Drainage range are electropolished as standard. All stainless steel products can be electropolished if required to special order.
