Seward County Historical Society News Letter June 2012 From the Prez:

It is a beautiful day and you are out driving just to see god’s gift to all of us with the countryside being green and lush, the flowers are all in bloom and the trees are almost all leafed out. As you travel down the road did you ever think about going to the Seward County Museum and visiting and learning more about our county? Do this sometime and you will find a wonderful trip back into history. The other day I had an e-mail asking me to find out about the old council oak tree and what tribes visited and more about the tree. Did you know there is a wonderful piece of history in the museum about this tree which is no longer in existence? Check it out sometime! The tribes visiting the tree probably were the Ponca Indians or perhaps the Otto tribes or even some of the Missouri tribes. We really can not say for sure but we do know they were maybe all there at one time. We are planning a great deal of activity for you for the summer. Students are going to visit the museum and take a scavenger hunt, a display of information about Cordova and Goehner, since this is their 125th Anniversary as communities. There is always the train rides and special family days planned so as you can’t think of something to do, try the Seward County Museum in Goehner. You will love the joy of learning more about your heritage Jean kolterman, President Joan Kennel Librarian What is a library and how it is used. A library is a place which literary antique material, such as books, periodicals are keep for references or reading. In our library we have obits of many people of our community. In looking at the displays think about the donor, then come to the library and look up their life history in their obits. this may lead to want to learn more, that is where I can help with genealogy. Knowing the County, people and much history of the county can learn more behind the people who are the donor's. A book can be found of which the workings of the museum , contracts, by-laws, other items which is not opened near enough. Also, Veterans books, Community Service, State laws, old catalogs, maps of the county, Churches, be surprised what you will find. We are open on Thursday and Sundays or call me at (402) 523-4115, or E-mail [email protected] with your questions or a tour and study the library with the displays. Hope to hear from all of you.
