ar zones are unpredictable. They can not be seen seismically. A zone can be from several feet to over 150 feet thick, with various levels of mobility, and it comes as no surprise to operators that tar zones can present major difficulties for drilling. The tar can plastically deform into the wellbore, circulation is lost, increased shock and vibrations occur; the tar sticks to the Bottom Hole Assembly (BHA) and drill pipe, clogs flowlines and soils handling equipment.

The Dril-Quip TarBuster Drill and Case System was designed to deal with the many problems caused by tar zones. The TarBuster System allows for casing shoe or bit and underreamer options to get the casing to the desired depth, and is capable of more aggressive drilling than with casing and reamer shoe. The main components of the TarBuster System are the Liner Hanger Setting Adapter (LHSA), the Liner Hanger Setting Adapter Running Tool (LHSART) and the Liner Top Isolation Packer (LTIP). The BHA is attached to the inner string below the LHSA. The LHSA is run on the first trip and the LTIP, with bidirectional slips, is run on the second trip.

Features: • Ream or drill in • Right- or left-hand torque • Hydraulic functions are port-isolated to prevent premature actuation • Liner/casing rotation enhances flow-by, helping to clear tar and debris from the hydraulic tool and out of the hole • Reduced length (less than half the length of a standard liner) provides less flow restriction

Flow-By Exit Slots

• Over four times more flow-by than conventional running tool; returns are taken up the I.D. annulus of the tool • Developed with the aid of Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) analysis

T ar B uster R unning P roce dures Running Procedures to Install Liner Hanger Setting Adapter (LHSA) 1. After hole interval is drilled, POOH with Bottom Hole Assembly (BHA) while boosting riser. 2. Pump viscous sweeps to help clean hole. 3. Run casing with liner shoe as specified by customer procedure. An open-ended shoe with 45 degree inverted bevel is recommended. 4. Place false rotary on top of last casing connection. 5. Run BHA and inner string. 6. Make up Liner Hanger Setting Adapter Running Tool (LHSART) with LHSA to inner string. 7. Lower TarBuster assembly through rotary and trip into the hole. 8. Turn on pumps once in 13 5/8" cased hole to wash liner down as needed or as per customer procedure. 9. Begin to rotate casing two stands from 13 5/8" casing shoe, with circulation. 30 RPM in cased hole suggested. 10. In open hole, adjust pump rate and weight on bit according to torque and hole conditions; monitor returns. 11. Continuing to rotate pipe, increase to 60 RPM in open hole. Continue into hole until TD is reached. 12. Rig up Cementing Manifold onto last stand of the landing string. 13. Launch 2" setting ball from the Cementing Manifold. 14. Circulate ball at 1-2 bpm to chase ball down. Shut pumps down before the ball reaches the ball seat to prevent inadvertently engaging the LHSART. 15. With the setting ball on seat, pressure up to 2,000 psi to hydraulically release LHSART. 16. Pick up LHSART to check for release. 17. While tripping out of the hole with LHSART and BHA, wash liner top in preparation for tieback with Liner Top Isolation Packer (LTIP). 18. Pull out of the hole.

Running Procedures to Install Liner Top Isolation Packer (LTIP) 1. Pick up and run the cementing drill pipe, stinger and (Halliburton Fas Drill?) Squeeze Packer, properly spaced out for squeeze job.

22. Pressure down annulus to 1,000 psi to test packer seal; hold test pressure for 5 minutes.

2. Pick up the LTIP with LTIP Running Tool and make up to cementing drill pipe.

23. Bleed off pressure.

3. Make up landing string to LTIP Running Tool and trip into the hole per pipe tally.

25. Rotate drill string to set the Halliburton Fas Drill Squeeze Packer to isolate the drill pipe annulus to squeeze the liner shoe.

4. Inside casing, wash and clean the hole per operator's procedures. 5. Wash and clean the liner top at 200 to 300 GPM, prior to stabbing into liner top to avoid damaging seals. 6. Tag LHSA to locate latch ring. 7. Slack off 60,000 lbs at the tool to expand load ring into profile in tieback and lock load ring. 8. Pick up 100,000 lbs over drill pipe weight to verify that load ring is engaged into tieback.

24. Pick up running tool above the liner top.

26. Pump and displace cement per operator’s procedure. 27. Pull stinger out of the Halliburton Fas Drill Squeeze Packer and circulate per operator’s procedure. 28. Pull out of the hole with the running tool and stinger.

9. Slack off to neutral weight. 10. Rig up cementing manifold. 11. Drop 3" setting ball from surface and circulate to running tool. 12. With setting ball on seat, pick up 100,000 lbs over drill pipe weight to put liner in tension. 13. Pressure to 1,000 psi to set bidirectional slip and suspend liner in tension. 14. Slack off 60,000 lbs at the tool, then pick up 60,000 lbs over drill pipe weight to aid in setting the slip. Repeat, increasing setting load to 100,000 lbs. 15. Slack off 40,000 lbs at the tool onto the slip. 16. Pressure to 2,000 psi to release running tool from LTIP, then release pressure to 500 psi and hold. 17. Pick up running string and check that running tool is released from the packer. If running tool is released you will note pressure drop in drill pipe within 4-6" of pipe movement at the running tool. 18. Pick up running tool's Packer Setting Assembly (PSA) above the liner top. 19. Slack off PSA back into the Tieback of the LTIP to trip and "arm" the Packer Setting Ring on the PSA. 20. Pick up running tool's PSA above the liner top a second time to release Packer Setting Ring. 21. Slowly slack off 100,000 lbs at the tool to set the packer seal. Add slow rotation of the drill pipe while slacking off to aid in working down the drill pipe weight.
