SUN CITY ANTHEM BOARD OF DIRECTORS

President’s Report Board elections. Ballots will be mailed to our members starting April 5th, and the deadline for casting ballots is 4:00 p.m. on April 30th. The ballots will be tabulated at a member meeting starting at 8:30 a.m. on May 1st. The newly constituted Board will hold its organizational meeting starting at 10:00 a.m. on May 10th. At this meeting, the Board will elect officers and agree on liaison assignments to our standing committees. Unlike many associations, we do not use a nominating committee to recruit or screen candidates for election to our Board. Any member (homeowner) can become a candidate by completing a few short forms. Our Association relies entirely on our members to select directors by voting. There will be many opportunities to listen to and meet the candidates at neighborhood gatherings and community forums. Please take the time to meet and learn about your neighbors who have volunteered to serve on our Board, and then cast your informed vote. Our Board’s role. Our Board is elected for only one purpose: to govern the affairs of our Association. We keep this limitation in mind when we are asked to try to influence issues affecting the residents of our city, county or state. We only get involved in legislation affecting our Association and issues that affect our community and the surrounding communities more than other Henderson residents. These include such issues as our opposition to the Sloan Hills strip mine proposal and our efforts to reduce air traffic over our community. With these rare exceptions, we limit our activities to governing our Association, which is what you elected us to do. Standing committees. Our Association relies heavily on the work of our standing committees to assist our Board in making policy decisions. Most of our committees hold monthly public meetings and also work between monthly meetings. A committee member serves a two-year term, and can serve a second term. Service on a committee is limited to four years, which assures over time an infusion of new members with new ideas. Our community limits committee service to a maximum of four years to balance the need for experience and continuity with the benefits of new ideas and different perspectives. Serving on a standing committee is an excellent way to influence decisions affecting our community, learn how our Association functions, and get to know the other volunteers serving on our committees and our Board. Please consider volunteering when you learn that a committee is seeking new members.

HOAs: good or bad? The Las Vegas Sun recently gauged the feelings of their readers about HOAs, which got me to thinking about this issue. I learned in law school that a person only owns a bundle of rights associated with a property item. For example, ownership of land is subject to limitations such as zoning and eminent domain rights reserved by government. Buying a home in an HOA adds another layer of rights and limitations to those imposed by government. HOAs are neither inherently good nor inherently bad. The pros and cons of each HOA are different, and the key concept is to match your desires to the right HOA. Barb and I used this cost-benefit analysis when we bought our home here. The benefits are many: three community buildings which include fitness centers, pools, craft and activity rooms, landscaped main streets, and much more. To us these benefits are worth the $1,100 in annual assessments; but this doesn’t mean buying a home in our Association is the right decision for another couple with a different perspective. Shredder truck problems. I was one of our many residents who experienced long lines at the community shredder truck on March 3. Although we only advertise the availability of this free paper shredding service to our residents, it appears that word has spread outside of our community. To avoid this problem in the future, it will be necessary to show an SCA activities card in order to use our shredding service. Your next opportunity to have sensitive records shredded will be on Saturday, May 5, 8:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. Anthem Council update. At their February meeting, the Anthem Council Board approved the purchase of new lights for the two waterfalls near the intersection of Eastern and Anthem Parkway. These new LED lights will cost $41,500. The primary reason for the change to LED lighting is that the original incandescent lights cannot handle the constant pounding imposed on them by the waterfalls, which results in frequent expensive repairs. Jim Long, Board President

MAKING A DIFFERENCE Many Openings for Volunteers at SCA's Own Channel 99 Station Transitions to High Definition; Needs Your Help Despite being referred to as a “vast wasteland” by a long-ago chairman of the FCC, television has nevertheless insinuated itself into our lives, for better or for worse. Here in Sun City Anthem, we reap the benefits of operating a cable television channel for the exclusive use and enjoyment of our residents, thanks to the largesse of Cox Communications. From a viewer's perspective, Channel 99, like Star Trek, takes us places that we haven't been before. Some of us, whether due to lack of transportation or physical infirmities, would not be able to see all of the local treasures or meet many fascinating people were it not for the curious and dedicated Sun City 82-year-old Claude Wilton has been studio cameraman since 2004 Anthem residentvolunteers who pound the streets of SCA as well as Clark County, cameras and microphones in tow. The jewel in the SCA communications crown, Channel 99's signature show, is the 40-minute videomagazine format Anthem Alive! which keeps us continually informed, amused, Editor Will Gilliam assembles the weekly edition of Anthem Alive! surprised and delighted, and has something for virtually every resident. We are consistently presented with a fascinating mix of features which not only entertain, but also inform.

A dedicated support staff works to coordinate activities. The station was launched in 2004 by resident Larry Attebery, and Bob Passaro took the reins as executive producer early in 2006. During Bob's stewardship, more diversified programming has transformed the station's lineup from basic news segments to include its current stable of around-the-clock offerings. For those with high-def cable reception, Channel 99 is now available on Cox channel 980, and programs may also be accessed 24/7 on the Internet at suncityanthem99.com. In addition to Anthem Alive! which is telecast every three hours around the clock — at 3, 6, 9, 12 a.m. and p.m. — the station offers many other specialized shows. The full Anthem Alive! hosts Nadine and Marlin programming Nielsen prepare for the next take. schedule is listed on the Internet at suncityanthem99.com. Daily programming includes: • Sit 'n Be Fit is a show directed to folk who like to exercise at home or are unable to get to the rec centers • Home Maintenance demonstrates how to perform routine tasks around the house • Channel 99 Showcase presents longer, in-depth versions of segments from Anthem Alive! • The Best of Channel 99, which showcases oldies but goodies, reruns of popular segments from Anthem Alive!

The show's diverse subject matter includes: reviews of local shows, movies, restaurants and books; interviews with residents and local celebrities; the latest on healthcare concerns and home maintenance tasks; home exercise tips; updates on SCA activities and events; local historic and archeological points of interest; music industry and entertainment icons; veterans' affairs, and more news tailored to seniors living the SCA lifestyle.

MAKING A DIFFERENCE The station has earned a reputation for delivering reliable, creative and relevant content not only to residents of SCA, but to neighboring communities as well. Channel 99's signal is transmitted beyond SCA boundaries, so there is an audience in Anthem Highlands, Anthem Country Club, Solera, Coventry and Seven Hills. Ideally, we're projecting an image of life in Sun City Anthem that encourages others to come here to live when they retire. And don't forget, viewing on the Internet is a great way to show your friends and family this wonderful Director and editor Jan Goldberg uses her IT place in which we experience to place various backgrounds behind on-camera presenters. live. Volunteer: Channel 99 has arrived at a crossroads as old-timers take their leave, and the station transitions to high-definition telecasts. Channel 99 has reached a milestone as many volunteer producers, editors and specialists who have been with the station since its inception plan to retire soon. Bob Passaro emphasizes that camera people, audio and lighting specialists, editing and graphics personnel, videographers, and equipment and studio managers are especially needed. Prior experience is not necessary; Channel 99 will train volunteers. Bob notes that most volunteers have received

free training in-house and had very little, if any, prior exposure to television production. Volunteer residents will learn all aspects of audio and video, using the latest computers and movie programs. “Many of our Channel 99 volunteers started here knowing nothing about TV production,” Bob says, “and some of them are now our channel's superstars.” Passaro emphasizes, “The only prerequisites for any position with Channel 99 are enthusiasm and the ability to work as part of a team.” He also notes that volunteers can work as many hours or as few as suits them, and can work from the Channel 99 offices — which are housed in a small building with its own entrance on the east side of Emmy Award-winning sound engineer Independence Gino Guarna wires up resident philosopher Lois Krashin for her weekly commentary. Center — or in some cases, from their own homes. Bob is available to train volunteers who are ready and willing to learn. Given the diversity of skills, interests and expertise indigenous to SCA residents, there could be a huge pool of untapped ambition and desire to participate in shaping the future of this precious community asset. Whether you have real-life know-how or simply harbor the desire for a new and fulfilling experience, volunteering at Channel 99 could enrich your life. Committee Reports ARC ARCHITECTURAL REVIEW Lionel Draper, Architectural Review Subcommittee Chairperson Our Community is aging and some older villages are in need of fence maintenance/repainting and exterior painting of their home. Those who have access to the Internet can find information regarding their exterior paint scheme or additional schemes to select if they so choose. If you are painting your home the same color scheme, you do not need Architectural approval. If you are changing your color scheme, you would need to attend one of the Architectural Plan Reviews to select a different color scheme and request approval. Perimeter fences and gates must be the Community color called Victorian Garnet. Courtyard fences, gates and entry gates can either be the color of Victorian Garnet or a color that matches one of the colors of their home. Two places that have the Victorian Garnet paint on hand are Frazee Paint and Sherwin Williams. The Sun City Anthem website at www.sca-hoa.org , under Board/Committees, Architectural Review lists the exterior paint information as well as the Design Guidelines and various Architectural forms.

Committee Reports FINANCE

The next regularly scheduled Finance Committee meeting is Wednesday, April 11, at 1:00 p.m. at Anthem Center. Jim Mayfield, Chair Phone: (512) 786-6779 Email: [email protected] The development of the Annual Budget is a rigorous process that begins in February and concludes with the Annual Residents Meeting to ratify the budget for the next year in mid-November. Volunteers from the standing committees spend many hours working with the Board of Directors and the management company staff over a nine and a half month period to develop the financial operating plan for the next year. Our objective is to insure that the high level of service and maintenance of our community are preserved at the lowest practical cost. Between now and fall, I will provide updates, here in the Spirit, on the progress on the development of the Annual Budget for 2013. By September, a series of workshops and meetings, open to the public, will be held to present and review the budget with the Board of Directors and the community. I urge you to track our work and to attend the informational workshops and meetings this fall on the development of the budget. Under the direction of one of our members, Georgietta James, the Annual Review of SCA Charter Clubs is complete. The reviews revealed that the presidents and treasurers of the charter clubs are doing an excellent job of operating within their by-laws and managing their finances. The Finance Committee needs new volunteers to serve as committee members. If you have a background in accounting and/or financial management, we would like the opportunity to discuss with you how you can help us support the Board of Directors in overseeing the financial operations of SCA. If interested, please feel free to contract me for more information. All meetings of the Finance Committee are open to the public. Residents are encouraged to attend our meetings to better understand the financial operations of your community. We welcome resident input at the meetings as a way to both gather new ideas and to maintain contact with community.

HEALTH AND FITNESS COMMITTEE Tuesday, April 10, 2012, 1:00 p.m. Bristol Room, Anthem Center Patricia Carrell , Chair at 260-3383, [email protected] What's NEW??? The Health and Fitness Committee will sponsor pilot programs of up to six months in duration targeted toward health, wellness and fitness in order to develop and provide trial runs for new opportunities for community residents' participation. This program is a cooperative effort with the Lifestyle Committee, which is assisting by accommodating space and scheduling. If you have a concept or idea related to health, wellness or fitness that you would like to explore or have identified an area of need, please contact the committee chair by April 15. The Health & Fitness Committee holds regularly 12 Sun City Anthem • April 2012

scheduled meetings at least quarterly. All residents are welcome to attend these meetings and feedback is appreciated. At this writing, it is not known if the committee will be meeting in April; if it does, it will be at the time and place indicated above. Interested residents may contact the committee chair to find out if the committee is meeting in any given month.

LIFESTYLE Next Meeting Date: Thursday, April 5th, 1:00 p.m. Anthem Center, Arlington Room Karen Lotspiech, Chairperson E-Mail: [email protected] Phone: 263-2347 The Lifestyle Committee is committed to exhibiting a positive approach in helping clubs and residents understand procedures, solve problems and accomplish goals. Please feel free to contact us if you have a question or need some help. We are one of the few standing committees that have two regularly scheduled meetings each month. Our workshop is the first Thursday. It is a more casual format where we interact with residents who are there to discuss an agenda item or address the committee during public comment period. Agenda items are only voted on at our formal meeting on the second Friday. Our meetings are open to the community, and our second meeting in April will be held Friday, April 13th at 9:00 a.m. We, members of the committee, appreciate the role of the SCA Board of Directors in making our world go ‘round. We urge all residents to participate in the upcoming Board elections by reading the candidates’ flyers, attending the debates and voting!

Committee Reports PROPERTIES & GROUNDS Next Meeting: April 10, 2012, 10:00 a.m. Location: Arlington Room, Anthem Center Stan Lenci, Chairperson, 702-953-5796 [email protected] I have been asked to publish a portion of my Chairman’s Report from our last P&G meeting to hopefully clarify the Project/Item Request Form (PIRF) process for residents. A PIRF is used to record a resident’s request to consider the purchase or modification of an item to improve our community. We have found that when the originator of a PIRF hears P&G has approved their PIRF, there’s a belief that it’s GOOD TO GO and there is nothing left to be done. Unfortunately, that’s not the case. To clarify, there are many steps in the PIRF process, but there are two Key Milestones that must be met. Those two key Milestones are: 1) 2)

PROJECT APPROVAL FUNDING APPROVAL

PROJECT APPROVAL MILESTONE This is where P&G decides if the Facilities Dept. should expend unplanned time, manpower and resources to define the scope of work and determine the dollars to accomplish the PIRF request. I say unplanned as this is additional effort and dollars not planned in the current Budget. When P&G receives a PIRF for review, we determine what I simply call the “3 V’s.” Viability Vetting Volunteer Advocate 1st V - Is the project is VIABLE - Is it reasonable and of sufficient benefit to the Association to expend time, effort, resources and more importantly, dollars. If the committee answer is “Yes,” we move on to the 2nd V. 2nd V - Should the project be VETTED? Vetting is the process of obtaining P&G’s approval of the Scope of Work and RFQ before issuance. Once that’s decided, it time for the 3rd V. 3rd V - Is a VOLUNTEER advocate needed to provide additional information for the project?

RESTAURANT ADVISORY COMMITTEE (RAC) Michal Wolf - Chairperson E-Mail: [email protected] Phone: 405-8133

The mission of the Restaurant Advisory Committee (RAC) has been to act as a liaison between the restaurant/tenant, the Board of Directors and the residents of Sun City Anthem on matters relating to successful restaurant and catering operations. The RAC has also been responsible for overseeing the tenant's compliance with the terms of their lease with the Association. Much of the work of our committee is no longer required following the closing of the Anthem View Restaurant late last year. Now that the results of the 2011 Restaurant Survey have been presented to the Board and they have decided to pursue a leased premises business model, the RAC has decided to temporarily suspend its meetings and activities to allow the Restaurant Selection Task Group to find a qualified and financially viable operator. As the number of potential tenants is narrowed, the RAC expects to again become involved in the restaurant selection process. The Board of Directors and the Restaurant Selection Task Group will continue to keep residents advised of their progress in finding a new restaurant operator.

THE YES MAN CAN!

Once P&G decides these 3 V’s, Facilities issues RFQ’s, obtains bids and returns the results to P&G with a recommendation for project execution. The completion of the Project Approval Milestone comes when P&G accepts RMI’s recommendation for the project. The request then moves forward for Funding Approval Milestone. FUNDING APPROVAL MILESTONE This is a totally separate process that’s too lengthy to detail today but in essence, this is where the Board allocates funds for the project in the Capital Budget. This Budget is presented to the residents for ratification sometime in the fourth quarter of each year. Once the Budget is ratified, the project has been fully approved and funded. The Facilities Department is now authorized to proceed with the project. That’s the abridged version of the PIRF process. I hope it gives you a better understanding of the overall process.

At the 10th Anniversary Dinner of The Foundation Assisting Seniors (formerly known as The Minuteman Foundation,) our own Karl Bruner was named Person of the Year 2011. Karl is a founding member of the Community Service Club, serving as Co-Chair of the Equipment Committee for over 10 years. As a volunteer, we could not ask for a more dedicated and caring man who is sensitive to the needs of others and always willing to go above and beyond to offer help to the residents of SCA. Not only does Karl contribute an enormous amount of time to CSC, he also uses his expertise in lighting and sound to run those systems for the Activities Dept., the Board of Directors, clubs and other performances in Freedom Hall and Hanneman Hall. His wife, Mary, another active volunteer, is often by his side to help when possible but during a Board Meeting, you will normally find Mary in the front row of Freedom Hall. On occasion, Karl and Mary take a break from volunteering and go on a much needed vacation. Traveling is one of their passions. After all these years of service, a man who expects no accolades has finally been recognized for the wonderful person he is. The CSC is so thankful Karl is one of us! 14 Sun City Anthem • April 2012

Community Patrol EMERGENCY – 911 Non-Emergency 311 SCACP - 614-6751

Your Community Patrol is staffed by dedicated volunteers who are “giving back” to their community in a special way. By devoting many hours of their time to this positive and rewarding effort, many members of the Patrol say they are gratified in just helping residents feel safer in their homes and in the community.

The primary function of the Community Patrol is to “observe and report” on any suspicious or unsafe conditions. This can range from solicitors in our posted “NO SOLICITING” community, or reports of suspicious individuals or vehicles, to monitoring unsafe conditions, such as construction vehicles blocking the road or vehicles parked on our sidewalks. Of course, we watchfor any situation that “just doesn’t look right.” We document these activities in our logs and then pass along to the appropriate agencies or authorities. In order for the Patrol to perform these activities, your HOA Board of Directors has provided uniforms and three marked vehicles for patrol services. Drivers ideally patrol through our villages in four-hour shifts, 24-hours a day, seven days a week. In addition to driving patrols, we have volunteers who walk their village streets, or bike through the various villages, wearing specially marked, brightly colored patrol shirts or vests. We also work with the Henderson Police Department on traffic and parking issues as well as the Neighborhood Watch Program. To assist in our patrolling activities, a resident “reverse directory” form is available. This information helps our drivers to quickly link an SCA address to a resident phone number. This helps prevent the driver from having to physically leave the vehicle and knock on your door to inform you of an observed problem at your residence. The Patrol provides a “house check” service for our residents. For three days up to a maximum of 90 days, we can walk around your residence, usually from dawn until 12:00 p.m. These house checks are performed daily for 30 days, then once a week for another 60 days. While Patrol members cannot enter a home when the resident is away, we will notify the owner (or designee) of problem areas that may be found when we check your residence. So when you will be traveling away from your home for three days or longer, consider signing up for this valuable service at the Patrol office. For the year 2011, your Patrol members logged 21,393 volunteer hours! They checked on 566 open garage doors and 52 “911” lights, performed 17,430 individual house checks, issued 59 parking reminders, and drove 88,715 miles through our communities in helping to provide a sense of well- being and service for our residents. We need more dedicated volunteers for your Community Patrol! We have monthly general membership meetings and one or two training sessions a year. Our annual awards breakfast and annual holiday party help recognize and “give back” to those members who themselves have given so much of their time and effort to this worthwhile endeavor. Come by the Community Patrol office to pick up an application. Our office is located between the tennis courts and bocce ball courts. Call our office at 614-6751 for additional information on all of our activities or visit the HOA website for additional information and forms.

Fitness Corner By Meg Poulson

With the hustle and bustle of the holidays behind you, now is a great time to explore a new relaxation technique such as Yoga or Meditation. Yoga, translated as “to yoke” or “to join together,” can be practiced in many different ways. However, it typically involves stretching exercises and different poses that incorporate deep breathing and meditation. Many times, Yoga poses are named after animals, such as down dog, cobra, and cat. Traditional Yogis actually recommend that you act like the specific animal while performing the pose to be in the present moment. Yoga as an activity is designed to stretch and tone the muscles, while keeping the spine and joints flexible. The deep, diaphragmatic breathing of yoga increases oxygen flow to the brain while the bending, twisting, and stretching movements are thought to massage internal organs and glands. This self-massaging effect can reduce pain and improve psychological syndromes, musculoskeletal disorders, neurological disorders, and autoimmune and immune syndromes. Due to its relaxing and aerobic nature, Yoga has been shown to decrease anxiety and stress while increasing physiological performance. So whether you’re looking for a relaxing activity, one that will increase your heart rate, or both, Yoga is an activity that may interest you. Try our new Meditation class Monday at 3:00 p.m. or Gentle Yoga Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday at 3:00 p.m. These classes are held at the Independence Center.

Facilities/Landscaping April ~ On April 2, 1513 Ponce De Leon sited and claimed a parcel of land in Florida which is now St. Augustine, the oldest city in the Continental US. Researchers do not really know how April got its name, but many believe it is from the Latin word “aperire” which means to open. This theory stems from the idea that traditionally is in the Northern Hemisphere. April is the month when the most varieties of flowers have buds that begin to open. The Daffodil is a flower that blooms in April. In Victorian times, the first Sunday in April was known as Daffodil Sunday. Families would take Daffodils from their gardens for patients in local hospitals. During the month of April, we will continue planting replacement plants where needed and certainly many home gardeners will be doing the same. When purchasing new vines, trees, shrubs, etc. it is very important to do a little research so you don’t end up with a landscape item dying off in the first year it is planted. It is not at all uncommon for our local nurseries to carry plants that do not adapt well to our extreme climate conditions. Check the information on the plant tag to make sure it will hold up during our freezing temperatures and high summer heat. It is also important to note the sun and shade recommendations as they relate to the area you are planting. If the plant you are thinking of buying does not have a tag on it, most nurseries have a counter with a reference book on it where you can look up the plant by its name to find out what a suitable environment is. These books include a section on Zones that have been mapped by the United States Department of Agriculture describing the growing conditions throughout the United States, including the Las Vegas area. Of course, you can also find a wealth of information on the Internet. Please note, according to the mandatory watering restrictions provided by SNWA (Southern Nevada Water Authority), during the month of April, irrigation may only be run on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday. Watering anytime other than the assigned days could result in a water-waste fee or citation. The featured photo is of the newly refurbished monument located on the golf course, which you view as you come uphill on Anthem Parkway, coming from Las Vegas on your way to Anthem Center. This monument was constructed when the Anthem Community first opened up and over the years, letters had rusted through and the background had become badly stained. So if you haven’t noticed, take a drive-by and see how great the monument now looks. There is also a turnout area at the bottom of the hill where you can pull off Anthem Parkway and park your vehicle. With the prime goal of keeping our community beautiful, I regularly walk our grounds and interact with the crews from three landscape companies that maintain our outdoor areas. These areas include: the grounds around the Centers; SCA streetscapes; desert ReVeg areas; the common areas and gate maintenance in Pinnacle Village; the landscape around the duplex homes and; rock drains within our Community. If you have questions, comments or concerns regarding any of our properties, please don’t hesitate to contact me at (702) 614-5814. We always welcome the opportunity to answer you and due to my field work, your emails will usually receive the quickest response [email protected].

Thank you,

Christine Noble, Landscape Supervisor “Caring for our Community”

teeth Eat. Smile. Kiss. a conversation with Gregg C. Hendrickson DDS about dental implants and implant supported dentures Did you know that one in four senior citizens are missing at least one tooth? (Some are missing upwards of ten.) Add in how many seniors are dissatisfied with their dentures and I'll bet that number increases to one in three!

What Is the benefit of an Implant? A single tooth implant is straight forward. I am replacing a missing tooth that might show when a person smiles. They get their complete smile back. No more covering their smile with their hand when they talk or eat.

Many seniors have turned to Dental Implants and Implant Supported Dentures to solve their smile and denture issues. I asked local dentist, Gregg Hendrickson about implants.

What is the benefit of Implant Supported Dentures? A glamorous smile that you can eat and talk with! Many times, clients are either dissatisfied with their denture or are missing enough teeth to want a denture. We'll talk about giving them a beautiful smile. We'll talk about having teeth securely in their mouth so their denture doesn't slosh around. Through the process of restoring their teeth we really are restoring their confidence and their zest for life. They can eat again, smile again, they can even kiss again! For some people it's a return to romance in their life.

Why Dental Implants? Dental Implants can restore smiles to a beautiful state. I can restore a single tooth or your entire mouth. It just depends on what a client wants to achieve. Most clients want to have a good looking smile, be able to eat healthy and nutritious food and don't want a denture flopping around in their mouth. Implants can fix all of those issues. Tell me about Implant Supported Dentures. My clients love these! Implant supported dentures are essentially dentures that snap or screw into implants. If you choose the snap in implant supported denture you can take them in or out of your mouth. If you choose the screw in Implant supported denture they are permanently attached to your implants and only your dentist can remove them. Both options are fantastic. The snap in option will cost you less than the screw in option.

What about these places offering teeth in a day? In my opinion, I wouldn't send my friends or family there. When you put an implant into bone, your bone needs time to heal. Bone healing takes anywhere from three to six months. It is that simple. Your natural teeth weren't made in a day and it is my opinion that you shouldn't be having surgery and replacement teeth all in a day. It didn't take a day to lose your teeth and I personally not comfortable with any process that says you can have them all back in a day.

advertisement

We are loving life! What advice would you give to people looking for implants? Do your homework. Find out who does implants in your area, and schedule a consultation. Don't feel pressured. Make sure you meet with the dentist. How can treatment be discussed if the dentist hasn't bothered to look in your mouth! Tell us why people should choose your office. Well, I'm pretty sure I am the best dentist in Henderson! Honestly, my dental team is just fabulous. We still believe in customer service and do a fantastic job at delivering that to our clients. We are not a dental mill, we offer implants from start to finish at our office, we offer sedation so clients won't feel a thing, our prices are very reasonable, and we offer complimentary consultations to discuss options and answer any questions. How can people reach you? My office is located on the northeast corner of Horizon Ridge and Coronado Center. Call me at 702-735-3284.

ARTS AND CRAFTS

Failure is very difficult for a writer to bear, but few can manage the shock of early success. Maurice Valency

Product Displays:

New member Robert R. Turtle read a selection from his Young Adult novel, a fantasy involving the friendships and conflicts of various beast societies. Recent readings involved Elaine Stubbs describing cleaning shrimp in the Gulf of Mexico, Beth Medhus’ memories of her dying mother, and also her 1957 poem, “The Proposal.” Former Chicago policeman Tony Sabatello told of the time when his squad car was mistaken for a taxi. There was also a reading of a three-part story, with each writer picking up the plot from the previous writer. Lynn Lanier read from his paper, “Scientific Development of Anti-Cancer Drugs,” and the potential use of micro-robots to destroy cancer cells. Donna Mabry read a selection from her Las Vegas-based mystery novel, “COD.” Joan Nagoya read from her memoir of three generations of her family, starting with her grandparents in Japan.

Several examples of creative designs made by the Arts and Crafts membership are located in the cabinets in the lobby of the Independence Center. Items in these display cases may be purchased through the Membership Desk located in the Independence Center or by contacting Joan Schaumburg at [email protected]. OPERA This month, we will be showing excerpts from the Opera Gala held at the Baden- Baden Festival Theatre. Two of the most exciting and beautiful young operatic voices currently before the public, the Russian soprano Anna Natrebko and the Latvian mezzo-soprano Elina Garanca would have guaranteed the greatest possible musical enjoyment. But a true gala demands the four classic types of operatic voice: soprano, mezzo-soprano, tenor and baritone. So the lovely duo became an imposing quartet with the addition of the Mexican star tenor Ramon Vargas and his no less famous baritone colleague from France, Ludovic Tezier. Members, and their guests, will be entertained with the showing of excerpts from various operas including Norma, Don Carlo, Lakme and Rigoletto. Our meeting this month will be held in Freedom Hall for the first hour and then you are invited to gather in the foyer for a social hour. Wine and cheese will be served to members and their guests. Please arrive at 6:45 p.m. to register. There will be no charge for members but there will be a guest fee of $5 for this special event.

The first day began with a welcome social hour, followed by a “potluck dinner” and wonderful evening of fellowship. The next day we toured historic Wickenburg and the Desert Caballeros Western Museum followed by a visit to the Vulture Gold Mine. On the following day, we enjoyed an exciting baseball game at Camelback Ranch Stadium between the Chicago White Sox and the Los Angeles Dodgers. For those non-baseball fans, there was a visit to the Scottsdale Arts Festival. As usual, every evening included either a “potluck dinner” or a visit to a local eatery.

The Scrabble “Word of the Day” is QUAGMIRE. This is a soft boggy or marshy area that gives way underfoot. It can also indicate a hazardous situation. If you find yourself with a Z in your rack, look for an O and an A. ZOA is the plural of ZOON and ZOON is the whole product of one fertilized egg. Another way to take advantage of the letter Z is with the word ZARF. A ZARF is an ornamental metal cup holder. Unless one plays Scrabble, why would one ever know this! Now for some Scrabble trivia: The highest possible score, theoretically, for a single play under American tournament Scrabble rules is 1,778 points for joining eight already-played tiles to form the word OXYPHENBUTAZONE across three triple-word-score squares, while simultaneously extending seven specific already-played words to form new words. Now THAT would truly be something about which to brag.

Now that you have finished shed your taxes, why don’t you stop by the sewing room located in the Gallery of the Anthem Center and see what we are doing. Our crafty ladies have been busy making wonderful items that are great for gifts or for a special treat just for you. We have wonderful place mats, napkins, ragtime quilts, aprons, microwave mitts, potholders and much more. We also have a whole array of clothes and cute accessories for any eighteen inch doll, including the American Girl doll. Please come in and check out our shop. These items are well made and reasonably priced. Our club offers many classes and we have many great members who are willing to teach you how to sew, knit, crochet, embroider and serge. We have several shared interest groups and we love sharing our passion for sewing, quilting, serging, knitting and crocheting. We would love to meet you so please come and check us out and make some new friends. You can also read all about us on our website, www. scasaq.org.

The Scrabble Plus Club meets each Friday afternoon from 1:00 p.m. - 5:00 p.m. in the Emerson/Franklin Room at Anthem Center. Anyone who is not a member is welcome to join us as a guest for a friendly game of Scrabble. If you want to join, membership is open to all SCA residents for only $10 a year. The January luncheon was such a success that we have planned another luncheon for April 13th at Giuseppe’s Bar & Grill, 2940 Bicentennial Parkway. As always, tell Carol Yu if you would like to attend. April 2012 •

TABLE TENNIS

Hey Everybody!

The Anthem Table Tennis Club has reserved club times on Monday & Fridays, 6:00 p.m. – 10:00p.m., Tuesday & Thursdays, 8:00 p.m. – 10:00 p.m., Wednesdays, 7:00 p.m. 10:00 p.m., Saturdays, 12:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. at Independence Hall Aerobics & Fitness Rooms

As spring starts to rear its head everywhere, many people's minds begin to turn from football and basketball to the good old national pastime of baseball! Helmets, running shoes and big round balls get put away and cleats, gloves and bats make their appearance. I think we can all remember back to a time when we played little league, high school or even just pick-up games with our friends. Many of us actually MISS those times, but with age comes many responsibilities. Family takes the main focus and we simply have too many things to do! Guess what. There is a bunch of folks that MAKE time for a little exercise and camaraderie. That would be us, Anthem Senior Softball! We are a bunch of people, some retired, some not, who put a few hours aside twice a week to get some exercise and relive the joy that playing baseball affords us! There only prerequisite is that you are 50 years old. That's it! We meet twice a week on Tuesday and Friday morning at Anthem Hills Park. Off of Reunion Rd., just east of Anthem Hills Parkway, right behind the Del Webb School. The cool part of it is that we welcome either gender. Yes sir, both men and women can play. Now a few of you are probably saying well, I'm not sure if I can actually STILL play! Well, we will let you come out and join us 3 times before you have to join the club. This way, you can try a few games to see if everything still works correctly and that you don't have to soak yourself in Ben Gay and Bio-Freeze for hours on end. If you decide to join our club, the dues are only $35 for the entire year. That's roughly less than .33 cents a game! Such a bargain!!!!! Plus, we have a really great yearly party, complete with a scrumptious dinner, great entertainment and lots of fun awards! Our starting time varies during the year to accommodate the weather. During the winter, we are out there at 9:30 a.m. with a little practice to limber up and then the game is at 10:00 a.m. We supply almost everything that you need; fields, bats, bases, pitching screens, balls and even ice packs for those annoying occasional sprains. All you need to bring is a glove and possibly a pair of cleats. We even use pinch runners if someone can't run very well! The level of how well we all play varies from member to member but the over-riding fact is that we all LOVE coming to the field twice a week. Some folks can hit the ball over the fence; some can't hit at all, but the bottom line is....We are out there having fun and enjoying the camaraderie that playing ball affords us! So if you “wanna have fun”, enjoy the wonderful weather, get some exercise and meet some neat, cool people, come out and join us....You'll be glad you did! For more info, call our President John Paul Molfetta at 702-361-4572........

Anthem residents of all abilities are welcome to join the Table Tennis Club. Table Tennis is a great sport for all individuals who want to improve their hand-eye coordination while having fun. Dr. Daniel Amen, a brain researcher, published the book, “Making A Good Brain Great.” In that book Dr. Amen indicates that Table Tennis is the very best sport to improve one's brain. Club members have access to a Table Tennis ball machine (robot) that can help players improve their skills and work on a multitude of different strokes at different speeds. Several volunteers have been trained on how to set up the club robot for others. Yearly dues, which are only $5, are used to maintain our equipment and purchase new or needed items. The date for the next “SAM” Cup Tournament between the Summerlin, Anthem and MacDonald Ranch Table Tennis Clubs will be announced shortly. This tournament will have a round robin mixed doubles competition with local Anthem club elimination rounds to allow all potential teams to participate. In the last six months, our Player Development Program held presentations and workshops on “Improving Your Table Tennis Skills,” “Beginner's Basics,” “Serving,” “Return of Serves” and “Footwork.” Future seminars and workshops will be developed based on club players' requests. In February, we created a singles challenge board. This allows members who want to play more singles to challenge higher seated players. Any club member can be added to the singles challenge board by contacting Rich Giroux. The Henderson Senior Games Table Tennis events will be held on Saturday, April 14th and Sunday April 15th. Any club member who would like to be added to an email distribution list so that they can be notified of any local tournament or events should email Rich Giroux at [email protected]. Contact Wes McGlaughlin at 873-7083 ([email protected]) for more information.

Club Information TENNIS The club has plans for several mixers and tournaments over the spring and fall. We'll take the summer off due to the heat. Coming up first, on Sunday morning, April 15th, from 8:30 a.m. until 12:30 p.m. is a fun mixer, doubles (mostly mixed doubles) with different partners. New club members are encouraged to participate, as, of course, are continuing club members. Please check the website (www.scatc.homestead.com) and bulletin boards at the tennis courts for additional information or contact Beverly Ginsberg at [email protected]. In league tennis news, we have the following great news to report. First, at this writing, three of five senior USTA teams, playing under the auspices of the Tennis Club, are strong contenders for the District Championship Playoffs that will be held on May 3rd -5th at the Darling Tennis Center. These are the SW 3.0, Linda Joven, Captain; SW 3.5 team, Linda Jones, Captain; and SM 3.5, Ken Merkey, Captain. By the time this is published, we will know which of these teams – hopefully all three – have made it into the playoffs. Second, by the time you read this, we will also know the results of the District Championship Playoffs from the Super Senior Teams captained by Josie Baker and Pam Cox, who will have competed at the Darling Tennis Center in early March. Finally, the adult Women's and Mixed Leagues are in progress for the spring season. No league participation is expected during the summer months. For more information about league play coming up in the fall or next winter and spring, please contact Josie Baker at [email protected]. The club is seeking a new webmaster for its website. Training will be provided by the previous webmaster, who indicates that the job is not difficult or onerous. Anyone interested in volunteering for the position should contact club President, Ed Burrell at [email protected].
