How to Choose Great Domain Names There are number of things you have to consider before finalising a domain name. A great domain name is easy to remember. Make sure yours is as short as possible and easy to spell. Most of all a domain name should reflect you and your business. 

Find the closest match to your business name. An ideal domain name will be an exact match to your business name. Unfortunately not everyone is able to choose the domain name matching their business name due to the fact that another business has already registered that domain name. In such a situation you will have to try some other alternatives.



Remember to register your main company or business name in popular domain spaces e.g. xyz.com, xyz.com.au, xyz.net, xyz.net.au. If your preferred name is taken then search for an abbreviation, change the order of words around, add hyphens, or add your city, state, or country to come up with something unique.

Register your product and service names e.g. xyzchairs.com.au. Also register generic terms relevant to your business e.g. chairs.com.au, bench.com.au, seats.com.au, furniture.com.au



Consider the length of your domain name. It is always good to have a domain name that is short as it’s easy for your customers to remember. But it should represent your business name as well and the short form of the name should have relevance to your business.



Register common spelling mistakes. It is wise to actually book the exact domain name along with some spelling mistakes which you think your customers can make while typing your domain name. This will ensure that they come to your website even if they’ve “misspelt your dmain namee.”

Helpful Tips when registering a Domain Name      

The only characters allowed are letters, digits and a hyphen (-) Spaces are not allowed. The name should be between 3 and 63 characters long. (Shorter the better). www. is not actually part of the domain name. You can buy as many domain names as you wish Domain names are NOT cAsE sEnSiTiVe - so xyz.com.au is just the same as XYZ.com.au.

Rules for Registering Australian (.AU) Domain Names: To register and secure a .com.au and .net.au domain name your business must be an Australian registered company, and must meet one of the following criteria:            

An exact match to the business name or trademark. An abbreviation of the business name or trademark. An acronym of the business name or trademark. A product that the business manufactures or sells. A program that the business administers. An activity that your business facilitates, teaches or trains. A service that your business provides. A venue that the business operates. A profession that is practised by the business’s employees or members. An event that your business organises or sponsors. Place names in Australia are disallowed as domain names. Domains can be 3 to 63 letters, and words can be separated by hyphens, but not spaces.

Transfer your Existing Domain Name from another Registrar As the registrant (you) of a domain name, you need a registrar (Local Directories™) to look after your domain name’s registration. You are free to choose any registrar you like. You can also change your registrar any time you want; changing registrars is often referred to as transferring your domain name. Of course, if you are considering a transfer, you should take into account any contractual obligations that you may have towards

your existing (old) registrar. The procedure for changing your registrar is described below. Please Note: You will need your Domain Password to transfer your domain name to Local Directories™. Benefits of transferring your Domain Name to Local Directories™ include:        

Requesting Your Domain Password: You will need to request the Domain Password from your current registrar. Depending on your existing Registrar’s system you may be able to retrieve the Domain Password automatically by using the domain “Recover Password” link at your existing Registrar’s website or by logging into your membership at your existing Registrar’s website. The Domain Password may also be called the “Registry Key” or “Authcode Password” or “UDAI Key”. Your existing registrar has the Domain Password, and if you ask for it, is obliged to give it to you within five days. The exact procedure for getting the Domain Password differs from one registrar to another, so you need to check with your registrar. When asking for your domain name’s Domain Password, you should tell your old registrar that you have chosen a new registrar. It is usually a good idea to tell your existing registrar who the new registrar is and when you expect the transfer to go through. Giving this information will help to make sure that everything goes smoothly. Domain Name Approval Process: 

Transferring from another Registrar to Local Directories™ simply acts as a domain renewal. By transferring your domain now at our standard rate, you’ll be extending your domain registration for an additional year or two, and you’ll immediately start to benefit from our quality service. Please note that you will only be asked to renew if it is within 90 days of expiring.



You will receive an email of approval or rejection from our Registrar when the transfer is processed. If the current registrar denies the transfer request then our Registrar will be able to provide you a refund.



You will have to become a member of Local Directories™ MyLD.com.au Web Services before the transfer of registrar can occur. If you are already a member then you only have to log-in.



Registrants are prohibited from changing registrars during the first sixty (60) days of a domain name registration. This means that at least sixty (60) days must have passed on your current domain name registration term in order to transfer your domain name from your existing registrar to Local Directories™.

Regulations also prohibit transferring domain names that will expire within 7 days. Please transfer your domains early to avoid this problem.



Your Domain Password (sometimes called “Transfer Key”, “Transfer Password”, “EPP authentication code”, “Registry Key”, “Authcode Password”, “Domain Token” or “UDAI Key) will be required for all .com, .net, .com.au, .net.au domain names. Contact your current registrar to get your Domain Password.



Please make sure your domain is not locked by your current registrar. Many registrars place locks without your knowledge.



If your domain expired with your existing registrar and you have since renewed it with them, please do not transfer it within 45 days of the previous expiry date, as it will not add another year to your domain name registration, and you will lose any renewal fees paid to your existing registrar.



The registration fees paid to your current Registrar will not be refunded as a result of any such transfer.



The new registrant must enter into a new registration agreement with us for a minimum term of twelve (12) months and pay the relevant fee at the current rate.



Ownership, and name servers of the domain name(s) will appear as it does with your current Registrar. If you wish to modify this information, you may do so after the transfer. This is done in the Manage Domain(s) section.
