Services and Music List November and December 2016

WELCOME For some years the four week period before Advent has been known as the Kingdom season, and the predominant liturgical colour is red, for a king. The brightness of All Saints pierces the autumnal gloom and gives a particular flavour to our celebration of All Souls, the next day, and, of course, to Remembrance. Liturgically, November is a month to remember the reach of God into human experience and of God’s presence in his world. It is that recognition which leads us into the bareness of Advent in hope for the coming Light. We hope very much that you will join us when you can. The Reverend Canon Nicholas Jepson-Biddle, Precentor Communicant members of other churches in good standing are welcome to receive the Sacrament in this church if they so desire.

CANONS IN RESIDENCE November 1 – 19: The Reverend Canon Andrew Featherstone, Acting Dean November 20 – December 3: The Reverend Canon Nicholas Jepson-Biddle, Precentor December 4 – 10: The Reverend Canon Dr Graham Dodds, Treasurer December 11 – 17: The Very Reverend Dr John Davies, Dean December 18 – 24: The Reverend Canon Nicholas Jepson-Biddle, Precentor December 25 – 31: The Reverend Canon Andrew Featherstone, Chancellor

A moving programme, devotedly sung and sensitively directed by Matthew Owens.” (BBC Music Magazine, November 2016) COPIES ARE AVAILABLE FROM THE CATHEDRAL SHOP

‘probably the finest English cathedral choir at the moment’ Gramophone Magazine

Boys have sung in Wells Cathedral for over 1100 years; girls began in 1994. Day by day, 18 boys and 18 girls sing in their own treble lines with the men – the 12 Vicars Choral. They often come together for major feast days, concerts, tours, and other special events to perform as The Great Choir. The Wells Cathedral Chorister Trust has been providing bursaries to support choristers’ education since 2000, recognizing that singing in a cathedral choir is the best foundation for children with musical gifts. Professional performers and composers from all branches of classical and popular music acknowledge their debt to the early routine of daily singing to the highest standards. Britain’s reputation as a musical nation is, in no small part, due to this great choral tradition and the formative experience it gives to talented youngsters. With the support of its Royal Patron, HRH The Countess of Wessex, the Trust is determined that no child with musical talent should miss out on these opportunities for financial reasons. The Trust’s aim is to raise enough money to fund all thirty-six choristers. This is some way off, and it needs your support for our appeal to help us reach this goal. The Trust’s website has more information and provides an opportunity to make a donation.
