Service of Worship Pentecost May 27, 2012 Eleven o’clock in the morning

 Keeping the heart of the University listening to the heart of God 

Today we celebrate Pentecost, often known as the church’s “birthday.” The name Pentecost comes from the Greek for “fiftieth day.” Its origins relate to the Jewish harvest festival of Shavuot, which commemorates God’s giving of the law on Mt. Sinai. Pentecost marks the day when the Holy Spirit descended on the disciples in Jerusalem fifty days after Easter. We celebrate today with a children’s procession.

At the close of today’s service, the Lord’s Supper will be celebrated in the Memorial Chapel located to the left of the chancel. Immediately following the Lord’s Supper, a service of prayer for healing will be held. The service consists of prayers for healing and wholeness, with anointing and laying on of hands. All are invited. The congregation is asked to remain silent during the prelude as a time of prayer and meditation.

Baptism

Presentation of Candidate

The parents of Samuel Andrew Hansen bring him forward for baptism. The following people come forward to become members of the Congregation at Duke Chapel: David and Roxanna Bottjen, Mark Dudley, Leslie Loyd, Amy McMann, Darla Miller, Anita and Carl Singley. The congregation responds by reading the passages in bold.

Prayer (in unison)

Lord of all time and eternity, you opened the gate of heaven by receiving Jesus in his glorious ascension; you empowered your Church by sending upon the apostles the fire of your Holy Spirit; and you claim us as your children when you bring us to your freedom through the waters of baptism. Come among us now to make and confirm the covenant to which you call us, and strengthen us to live your redeemed life. Amen.

Making and Renewing Our Commitment to Follow Christ

The minister will first ask the candidate’s parents and godparents and then the congregation to respond to the following questions: Do you turn to Christ as Savior, Lord, and Friend? I turn to Christ. Do you repent of all your sins? I repent of all my sins. Do you renounce evil? I renounce evil.

Renewing the Outward Sign of Inward Faith

The minister blesses the waters of baptism. Do you believe and trust in God the Father, source of all being and life, the one for whom we exist? I believe and trust in God the Father. Do you believe and trust in God the Son, who took our human nature, died for us, and rose again? I believe and trust in God the Son. Do you believe and trust in God the Holy Spirit, who gives life to the people of God, and makes Christ known in the world? I believe and trust in God the Holy Spirit. This is the faith of the Church. This is our faith. We believe and trust in one God, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.

Baptism Welcoming of New Members

The minister asks questions to the new members and invites all members of the Congregation at Duke Chapel to stand and respond. Brothers and sisters, do all in your power to increase their faith, confirm their hope, and perfect them in love. With God’s help we will order our lives after the example of Christ that, surrounded by steadfast love, you may be established in the faith, and confirmed and strengthened in the way that leads to life eternal. Amen.

Commissioning The minister says a prayer of commissioning and prompts the response: Sheltering God, in your love you have called us to know you, led us to trust you, and bound our life with yours. Surround us with your love; protect us from evil; fill us with your Holy Spirit; and restore us in the family of your Church; that we may walk in the way of Christ and grow in the knowledge of your love. Amen. *Peace (All exchange signs and words of God’s peace.)

Proclamation Prayer for Illumination (in unison)

Holy Spirit, sent by the Father, open your words to us and ignite in us your holy fire; strengthen your children with the gift of faith, revive your Church with the breath of love, and renew the face of the earth, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Thanksgiving This morning we give thanks for groundskeepers at Duke and the way they make the campus more beautiful through landscaping, planting, and pruning. The ushers bring a set of small pruning shears to the altar. In Durham, we remember the churches and faith communities who join together in a shared desire to seek the peace and well-being of the city. The ushers bring forward a brochure from Durham Congregations in Action. *Prayer
