As you all know, it has been a long and difficult summer for me and my family. I wanted to take a moment to thank you for all your support and love. I wrote a portion of this in a blog post at the beginning of my separation. You all are such a wonderful foundation for me and my children and I cannot thank you enough. When I was in Atlanta in July my Doctorate of Ministry class asked me to preach for our chapel service, as we planned we chose this text from Isaiah: Do not remember the former things, or consider the things of old. I am about to do a new thing; now it springs forth, do you not perceive it? I will make a way in the wilderness and rivers in the desert. The wild animals will honor me, the jackals and the ostriches; for I give water in the wilderness, rivers in the desert, to give drink to my chosen people, the people whom I formed for myself so that they might declare my praise. ~Isaiah 43:18-21 I have a great community in Ashland, friends, and the support of family, both blood relation and not. However, this is a difficult, vulnerable, and very raw time in my life. Everything has changed, and over the next year of this separation and impending divorce everything will continue to change. I beg for your patience and mercy as your pastor. Isaiah’s message is that God is doing a new thing. For me, a new thing is definitely happening, I don’t know if God is doing it or not, but it is happening. However, my faith tells me that God is always doing, reforming, “working” on me. But what is provocative about this text is – notice where the new thing is… it’s in the wilderness and the desert. It’s in a difficult place. We like to lift up a “new thing” as if it is the salvation from the old thing, but there’s a part of me that really liked that old thing. I was comfortable there. I liked being married, I liked my family, no it wasn’t perfect, but I was happy and wanted it to work. Maybe this “new thing” is for the best, although I admit, I can’t quite perceive that yet, or maybe I just need to believe that. But right now I am tired and thirsty in the desert. Right now I am cold and lost in the wilderness. God will make a path, and God will make the waters come, Isaiah says. Because sin and death does not have the last word, because I will not sit in this darkness forever, because I believe in a God of resurrection, a God of a new thing, even when I cannot yet perceive it. Welcome back! It’s a new school year and we are excited to be back in our Sunday School classes and hearing about everyone’s summer adventures. We know that beginning something new can raise feelings of both excitement and worry for children and youth so as your family starts out this school year, know that our teachers and staff are here as a support and resource for any questions, concerns, or curiosities you may have! We will be officially kicking things off on September 7 at 10 a.m. Kids and families will have a chance to reconnect and get to see their classrooms and meet their teachers. And on Sunday September 14 our Kids Club and Youth Group will meet at Ashland from 5:00-7:00 PM. Also, make sure to check out what we’re up to in worship. Be well, Katie The summer has passed by quickly since I began working as the Director of the preschool. I am enjoying my new role and preparations for the upcoming school year. This summer has been filled with fun activities for the children such as water days, pajama day, a summer picnic with hot dogs, and a movie day with pizza and popcorn. The children learned about summer foods, ocean creatures, camping, and the beach. The quiet of the summer program will soon change because the nursery program will be back in session. Most of the classes are full except for the child care 3’s and the afternoon pilot. People are arriving on a daily basis to join our program, so I am hopeful the numbers for these classes will rise. Anyone who knows of families looking for child care, please have them contact us. We have been busy over the summer making some renovations to the preschool. The biggest renovation was the replacement of the floors in the building. The teachers worked hard moving furniture, cleaning and reorganizing their rooms. It was amazing to watch how well they worked together to get the job completed. We truly are fortunate to have such an amazing staff. We also hired painters to paint the preschool office and room 5, which is the only classroom that has not been painted. It was a needed change and looks so much better. The summer seems to be winding down and preparations for the start of the school year are beginning. I know that we will have another great year at the preschool!

More information and registration forms are on the hall table. A big welcome to "Newcomer" Matthew Dupree playing the Vibraphone at both services on Sunday, September 14th. As a percussionist this is one of the many instruments he plays which he does quite well! The following information is about Matt, his education and goals for the future. He will graduate in January from Towson University. Matthew Dupree’s talents stem far and wide in the musical world. An exceedingly versatile musician, Matthew’s musical interests reach not only the performance side of classical percussion, chamber music, jazz, and world Music, but to the scholarly side of Music theory, pedagogy, and history. His extremely passionate and intense, yet mature playing is a direct reflection of the musicians he has studied with; notably Dr. Patrick Roulet, Dr. N. Scott Robinson, Mark Craig, Frank Russo, and Dr. Michelle Humphreys. On multiple occasions he has performed alongside his Towson University professors throughout the Baltimore/D.C area. In addition to his professors, Mr. Dupree has built a reputation with Silver Spring native percussionist and composer Rich O’Meara, following his performance in a concert honoring Rich’s music. Following graduation, Matthew aspires to continue his studies into the fields of percussion performance, pedagogy, and percussion history. He also enjoys biking, ice hockey, and golf.

The Ashland Church Family CARES … Update from the Ashland Angels Hello dear friends, Hope the finds you all enjoying the last days of summer as BUSY September is almost here. As I write this, I know many of you are busy filling back packs, planning new meetings and agendas, thinking about fall projects needing to be done, and adjusting to new calendars etc. Although I hate to think of summer slipping away, there is something kind of exciting in the air when September is near. For many of you it might even be Ravens football! Thank you Barbara Porter and JoAnn Ruther for covering for me while I was away. Margie Berlin and Barbara Porter took care of the summer card duty. Much appreciated.....thank you gals. Our dear friend, Mary McDonald, died on her birthday, July 6th. Mary will be dearly missed and our prayers continue for Bill, and her family. Thank you all for the many cards, calls, visits and meals provided to Mary and Bill, prior to her passing. Your many gifts of love will be long remembered and are much appreciated. Worship Committee Notes: Worship Survey

This fall, the Worship Committee will send out a short survey for the congregation regarding our worship services. While we also encourage on-going comments, we typically do a formal survey every few years to understand the interests of our members. The survey will be available both in paper format and also online at Kwiksurvey. The paper format will have space for additional written comments which is unfortunately not an available feature on Kwiksurvey. Please feel free to use whichever option you prefer. Please check your bulletins for further updates and we look forward to your comments. Carla Ulgen for the Worship Committee NEW WALKWAY TO LOWER PARKING LOT UNDERWAY! Eagle Scout Candidate Ben Eby (Kim Aspden’s troop) is a candidate for Eagle scout and will be soliciting donations for the project which will cost around $2,500 and should be completed this fall. Ashland Families, Maybe you've noticed, but we are currently experiencing quiet a groundswell at Ashland! Our Sunday School classes are filling up with children & youth and our nursery is usually packed throughout the school year! We are so grateful for this growth but we have reached a point where it is now an issue of safety to only have one person working in our nursery. Long story short, we need your help in the nursery on Sunday mornings, starting September 7. You may e-mail Debbie at [email protected] to sign up for a Sunday. The time commitment will be from 10:45-12:15 each morning. Please consider helping out. Without consistent volunteer support we will not be able to offer nursery care to all the kids at Ashland as we'll only be able to allow a limited number of children per week.
