Heart disease is the world’s biggest killer. Fact. What can you do about it? Find out during Heart Awareness Month, this September. Dr Vash Mungal-Singh, CEO of the Heart and Stroke Foundation doesn’t like to pull her punches. ‘Heart disease will kill a third of men and a quarter of women in South Africa’ she says. ‘Think about that. Four couples are around a dinner table. At least two people will die from heart disease. Two of your friends. Gone. Heart disease is the world’s number one killer and sits at number two in South Africa, second only to HIV/Aids. This is scary stuff, but what I want people to realise is that 80% of heart disease is preventable through lifestyle changes. We don’t have to just lie down and die.’ Dr Vash’s comments come in the lead up to Heart Awareness Month, which runs throughout September 2011, with World Heart Day falling on 29th September. ‘This is a big event in our calendar,’ she says. ‘It’s our chance to really raise awareness of heart disease and its prevention and to this end we have teamed up with Clicks Clinics nationwide to offer heart health assessments at nominal cost to the public.’ Willie Jordaan, Head of Professional Services at Clicks comments, ‘We are very excited to have partnered with the Heart and Stroke Foundation for Heart Awareness Month in September and are committed to supporting their life saving work. All Clicks Clinics will be offering four heart health screening options throughout the month and consumers can choose the screening option that best suits their needs. These range from a simple “One heart health check” - blood pressure and BMI to a Lipogram- comprehensive cholesterol test for those with high cholesterol in their family history. With prices starting from just R10, every member of the public can afford to go for a screening test and we encourage everybody to take part and have their heart health assessed.’ There are many misconceptions surrounding heart disease, especially the widely held beliefs that women do not fall victim to heart disease and that young people are largely immune. ‘This is not true’, says Dr Vash. ‘More and more young people in their 30s are affected by heart attacks and strokes. Moreover, each year, more women die from heart disease than from all cancers combined.’ Says Dr Vash, ‘The message we want to send out is twofold. Firstly, we want people to realise that heart disease affects every family in South Africa. This has tremendous implications for individuals, families, the country and the economy. Secondly, we need people to understand that it can be beaten – and easily. A healthy diet, exercise and not smoking all help in the fight against heart disease and even if each South African just does one thing to improve their heart health this September, that’s a step in the right direction.’ September 29th will see countries around the world collaborating to raise awareness of the global scourge of heart disease under the banner ‘One World, One Home, One Heart’. The message here is that the whole world needs to unite against heart disease and that individuals in every home around the world have a part to play.

South Africa is no exception and the Heart and Stroke Foundation, in addition to the Clicks screening tests, will be running radio and TV adverts, giving interviews, making information available to the public and reinforcing the message that heart health begins in the home. Dr Vash concludes. ’Do one thing for our heart this September – get tested. It could save your life.’ For more information, please visit www.heartfoundation.co.za.

Heart Awareness Month with Clicks This year the Heart and Stroke Foundation SA has teamed up with Clicks to offer heart health assessments at a nominal cost to the public. We are delighted with the partnership as September Month is a big event in our calendar and Clicks has enabled us to raise awareness of heart disease and its prevention on a national scale. All Clicks Clinics will be offering four heart health screening options throughout the month and consumers can choose the screening option that best suits their needs. These range from a simple “One heart health check” - blood pressure and BMI - to a Lipogram – a comprehensive cholesterol test for those with high cholesterol in their family history. With prices starting from just R10, every member of the public can afford to go for a screening test and we encourage everybody to take part and have their heart health assessed. Added onto this campaign there are a number of communication elements we have used to promote our World Heart Day activities. Each Clicks outlet displays the in-store promotional poster, banner, wobblers and leaflets. The in-store radio carries our health message and encourages shoppers to go and get tested. If that does not make them go for a screening we have also added a lucky draw and prize for those who take part in a health screening. For each health assessment undertaken, R5.00 will be donated to the Heart and Stroke Foundation enabling us to raise much needed funds to continue our work in the community. We have continued to use the global theme “One World, One Home, One Heart” entwining it in all of our promotions. Together with the in-store promotions we have a television advert being aired through two television channels with credit given to a local college “Cape Peninsula University of Technology” who compiled the advert for us pro bono. Daily facebook feeds and website updates on the campaign are also being managed. A campaign is never a campaign without a launch! The Heart and Stroke Foundation hosted a glittering gala dinner and awards ceremony on Friday, 26th August in Cape Town to mark this occasion. Popular Top Billing presenter, Jeannie D, filled the role of MC for the evening, which was the official launch of September’s Heart Awareness Month, but also a tribute to 7 Business Women’s Association (BWA) members who took part in the HSFSA’s 4 month heart health challenge, My Red Dress Quest. The following Monday over 61 media houses and editors received a media desk drop gift informing them all about Heart Awareness month and how import it is to get tested. Heart Awareness Month and World Heart Day are highlights on our calendar, as you can see!
