WE USE THE VATICAN II MISSAL WE SAY * AND ALSO WITH YOU * At St. Stanislaus we continue to pray the originally authorized English translation of the Vatican II Catholic Liturgy. It is slightly different from the Mass prayers currently used in the Roman Catholic parishes. If you are unsure about the texts we use, please feel free to follow “The Order of the Mass” as it appears in readily available Saint Joseph Sunday Missals. WEDNESDAY BIBLE STUDY Our Bible Study takes place every Wednesday at 10am. It is based on the Lectionary Scripture selections read on Sunday Mass. This program helps make the Scriptures easier to understand, explain historical and cultural background and encourage the participants to apply these texts to their daily lives.

FREE HEALTH SCREENING Thanks to the generous parishioners donating their time and skills, every first Sunday of the month, from 10:15 a.m. until 12:45 p.m. there are two nurses (one English speaking, one Polish) offering invaluable healthy lifestyle advice as well as free blood pressure testing.

On Sunday, August 9th 2015, our Annual Parishioners Meeting took place. At this meeting a majority of the members voted to elect Ken Beekman and Kathy Luedde to the Board of Directors. We wish to thank Cynthia Cygan, Jeannette Harris, and Kevin Schindler - the other candidates - and all who voted for taking seriously their responsibility for our Parish community. At a Board meeting that immediately followed the election two new Board members were sworn in and, in accordance with our By-laws, new officers were elected. Donna Nachefski was elected as the Chairman, Kathy Luedde as the Board’s Secretary, and Roman Kaminski was re-elected as the Treasurer. Fr. Marek Bożek, as the Pastor, remains the Board’s President ex-offcio. Please, pray for our Board and entire Parish community!

W niedzielę 9 sierpnia 2015 r. odbyło się Doroczne Zebranie Parafian. Podczas tego zebrania większość zarejestrowanych Parafian wybrała Ken’a Beekman i Kathy Luedde do Rady Dyrektorów. Dziękujemy Cynthi Cygan, Jeannette Harris, and Kevin’owi Schindler - pozostałym kandydatom - oraz wszystkim głosującym, za poczucie odpowiedzialności za naszą wspólnotę parafialną. Na spotkaniu Rady bezpośrednio po wyborach, nowi członkowie zostali zaprzysiężeni. Zgodnie z naszym Statutem, wybrano również nową Przewodniczącą - Donnę Nachefski, oraz nową Sekretarz - Kathy Luedde. Roman Kaminski został po raz kolejny Skarbnikiem. Ks. Marek Bożek jest na mocy urzędu Proboszcza Prezydentem Rady. Prosimy o modlitwę w intencji Rady Dyrektorów i naszej całej Parafii.

Dear Parishioners and Friends, During my sabbatical time in the Holy Land I had a chance to visit many ancient churches, some even 1,600 years old! Many of them, especially those belonging to various Orthodox communities, are filled with countless icons and the constant aroma of burning incense. To people who are used to modern church architecture in Europe and North America, such a sensory experience can be a little overwhelming. On more than one occasion I overheard bored Westerner tourists, as they were complaining about those sacred places being “much too churchy” for their liking. Such, and similar comments made me wonder: is it possible for a church to be “too churchy” - either in an aesthetic, or theological sense? Should churches, in an effort to reach the proverbial “modern man”, become less churchy and more “Starbucksy”? Imagine you are sitting in a donut shop. You have been here many times and nobody has ever complained about this place, saying, “this donut shop is too donutty.” It is a donut shop; so you expect it to be donutty. No one ever said that a sporting event was too sporty, a library too booky, a concert too musicy, an airport too planey, a home too homey, a college too schooly, or a hospital too hospitally. Yet, some people do say, “that church was too churchy.” But what else should it be? Why the double-standard? Why do we condemn the church for being too much about Jesus, God’s unconditional love, your soul, spirituality, heaven and hell, grace and sin, right and wrong? We surely do not complain that a donut shop offers Boston Crème, cinnamon buns, apple fritters, cream sticks, jelly filled, glazed, and blueberry cake… Because some churches are listening to this sort of cultural critique, it can become quite ridiculous. Since some churches actually believe that they should not be churchy, they try to hide their spiritual donuts, if you know what I mean. Participants can attend, be fairly comfortable and entertained, without being confronted with too many “Godly” matters like justice, solidarity with the poor and the oppressed, or even the fact of our own mortality. Then, right at the end of the service, a little “Jesus” is slipped in. But that is like going to a hospital, only to have the doctors and nurses pal around with you, never addressing your physical condition; but right at the end, when you are about to go to your car, some nurse’s aid slips a little medicine in your pocket, with an apology! All this time you needed surgery and an IV, but they were afraid of upsetting you. They were afraid to tell you that some of your organs are failing, or that you need to change your unhealthy habits. They did not want to appear arrogant, even though they were the only ones in town with the cure.

The Church does nobody any favors when it refuses to be churchy. We are not called to be a social club, even though we love having fun and spending time together. We are not called to be a bar, even though we enjoy a drink or two after (not instead) of Sunday Mass. We are not called to be a tourist bureau, even though traveling with your church buddies is really fun. We are not called to be another Starbucks, movie theatre, or country club. The Church needs to be churchy, and it must do churchy things with enthusiasm and vigor. I will never convince you of the goodness of something so long as I hide it from you. If I want you to grasp the beauty of Bach’s cello suite No. 1, then I must play it for you. We – the Church, the Body of Christ, must not hide our scriptures, our sacraments, our worship, our preaching, our service, our call to solidarity and equality, our lament, or our joy in Jesus. “But what if people don’t like us?” I hear. Simple fact that someone does not like you, is not a good enough reason to change who you are. Now, if you’re a jerk that loves to cause constant “drama”, then - by all means - stop being a jerk. But, do not stop being the Church. You were baptized to be churchy. You are called to be churchy. So stand firm. Be churchy. Be Jesusy. Be the light of the world. Fr. Marek Pastor

Drodzy Parafianie i Przyjaciele, W trakcie mojego urlopu sabatycznego w Ziemi Świętej miałem przywilej odwiedzin i modlitwy w wielu starożytnych kościołach, których wiek przekraczał czasami 1600 lat! Wiele z tych zabytkowych kościołów, zwłaszcza te należące do Prawosławnych wspólnot, wypełnionych jest niezliczonymi ikonami oraz nieustannym zapachem palącego się kadzidła. Dla gości przywykłych do nowożytnych kościołów Europy Zachodniej i Ameryki Północnej, odwiedziny w tak bardzo innych świątyniach mogą być nieco przytłaczające. Kilka razy słyszałem komentarze takich zachodnich turystów, nie kryjących swojego zdziwienia, że te kościoły są „zbyt kościelne” jak na ich gusty. Komentarze tego typu sprowokowały mnie do ciekawej refleksji: czy możliwe jest aby kościół był „zbyt kościelny” – bądź to w estetycznym, lub teologicznym sensie? Czy kościoły, próbując dotrzeć do tak zwanego „współczesnego człowieka”, powinny być mniej kościelne i bardziej kawiarniane? Wyobraź sobie, że jesteś w cukierni. To nie jest twój pierwszy raz w tej cukierni i jeszcze nigdy nie słyszałeś(aś), żeby ktoś narzekał na to miejsce nazywające je „zbyt słodkim!” W końcu to jest cukiernia, i powinna być słodka! Podobnie zresztą nikt nie narzeka, że imprezy sportowe są zbyt sportowe, biblioteka zbyt książkowa, koncert zbyt muzyczny, lotnisko zbyt lotniskowe, dom zbyt domowy, szpital zbyt szpitalny, a uniwerytet zbyt uczelniany! Niektórzy jednak są zdania, że bywają „zbyt kościelne” kościoły... Warto więc zapytać się: a jakie mają być kościoły? Dlaczego w stosunku do kościołów używany jest taki podwójny standard? Dlaczego narzekamy na kościoły, że za bardzo skupiają się na Jezusie i Jego przesłaniu, że w kółko mówią o bezwarunkowej Bożej miłości, że nie przestają przypominać nam o duszy, duchowości, niebie i piekle, łasce i grzechu? Nikt przecież nie narzeka na to, że w cukierni możemy każdego dnia kupić pączki, torty, i inne słodkości! Jako że niektóre kościoły biorą na serio ową krytkę nowożytnego człowieka, dochodzi czasem do paradoksalnych sytuacji. Zdarza się coraz częściej, że kościoły probują być „mniej kościelne” i starają się dyskretnie chować po kątach mówiąc przenośnie - duchowe pączki. Osoby odwiedzające takie kościoły czują się bardzo komfortowo w trakcie nabożeństw, ich uwagę skupia całkiem niezła muzyka i ciekawe porady psychologiczne w formie kazań. Nikt za bardzo nie narzuca im „bożych” tematów, jak na przykład sprawiedliwość społeczna, solidarność z ubogimi, o naszej własnej śmiertelności nie wspominając. Być może na koniec takiego nabożeństwa w takimn mniej kościelnym kościele ktoś coś wspomni o Panu Jezusie. To wszystko ma taki sam sens jak szpital, w którym lekarze i pielęgniarki poklepują pacjentów po ramieniu, nigdy nie martwiąc ich rozmową o faktycznym stanie ich zdrowia. Być może na koniec wizyty w takim szpitalu pielęgniarz dyskretnie wciśnie pacjentowi do kieszeni pudełko tabletek z notatką „jak bardzo im przykro, że muszą to zrobić!” Całkiem możliwe, że pacjent przez cały ten czas potrzebował poważnej operacji i kroplówki, ale kadra szpitalna starała się nikogo nie obrazić. Nikt nie powiedział pacjentowi, że niektóre z jego organów zaczynają nawalać, czy też że musi on zmienić niezdrowy tryb życia. Lekarze w owym szpitalu nie chcieli wydawać się aroganccy, mimo że to oni właśnie wiedzieli najlepiej co szkodzi, a co pomaga pacjentowi. Kościół nie robi nikomu żadnej przysługi kiedy przestaje być kościelny. Kościół - czyli my - nie powstał po to, by być klubem towarzyskim, mimo że parafianie lubią przebywać w gronie przyjaciół. Jako Kościół nie jesteśmy barem, mimo że przyjemnie jest napić się polskiego piwka po niedzielnej Mszy Świętej. Jako Kościół nie jesteśmy również biurem podróży, mimo że podróżowanie w gronie przyjaznych parafian jest super doświadczeniem. Jako Kościół nie jestemy powołani do bycia kawiarnią, kinem, czy ekskluzywnym klubem. Kościół musi być „kościelny”, musi robić „kościelne” rzeczy z przekonaniem i wigorem. Nigdy nie przekonam kogoś do czegoś, jeśli sam nie jestem przekonany o wyjątkowej wartości tego czegoś. Jeśli chcę kogoś przekonać do piękna 1 Koncertu na Wiolonczellę J.S. Bacha, to najlepszym na to sposobem jest zaprezentowanie tej muzyki. My, czyli Kościół, Mistyczne Ciało Chrystusa, nie możemy pozwolić sobie na chowanie po kątach naszego Pisma, naszych sakramentów, naszej liturgii, naszego głoszenia, naszej posługi, naszego wezwania do solidarności i równości, naszego płaczu i naszej radości w Jezusie. „Ale co się stanie jeśli ludzie nas nie będą lubić?” No cóż, fakt że ktoś ciebie nie lubi nie jest w sam sobie powodem, by zmieniąc to kim jesteś. Oczywiście - jeśli lubujesz się w wywoływaniu nieustannych konfliktów, to zmień się jak najszybciej. Ale nie przestańmy być Kościołem. Zostaliśmy ochrzczeni po to, by być Kościołem. Jesteśmy powowałani do bycia Kościołem. Nie bój się wieć być „zbyt kościelny!” Bądź Jezusowy. Bądź światłością świata! Ks. Marek Proboszcz

The Polish Falcon Festival will be held September 11th and 12th, Friday and Saturday. On Friday, an outdoor Garden Party will be from 4:00pm-10:30pm. Saturday, lunch and dinner will be served from 11:00am-7:30pm, and the Garden Party will be from 11:00am-10:30pm. September 13: Sunday School Year Inauguration

13 września: Inauguracja Roku Katechetycznego

Official Inauguration of a new Sunday School year will take place on September 13th. A special blessing of schoolchildren, along with their schoolbags and other educational equipment (pens, crayons, rulers, calculators, etc.) will be offered during 9:00 a.m. Mass. Afterwards, children will meet with their new teachers and proceed together to JREC (Joseph Rudawski Educational Center) for the first class of this new school year. As the family of faith we all pray for God’s blessing upon our young members and their educational adventures.

September 13: Coffee & Donuts for a good cause On the second Sunday of each month, the proceeds from the coffee and donut sales are used to purchase food for the monthly dinner and approximately 200 sandwiches for homeless women and children at “Karen House” shelter, just a few blocks away from our church.

September 19: “Polish Open” Golf Tournament The Polish Heritage Open will tee off on Saturday, September 19th at The Falls Golf Course. This “tradition like no other“ will feature the world famous vodka cart; the pickle hole, Taste of Poland tent, and a wonderful afternoon with family and friends. 12 września: Wspólny spacer po parku

Oficjalna Inauguracja nowego roku katechetycznego odędzie się w niedzielę 13 września, wraz ze specjalnym błogosławieństwem dzieci szkolnych oraz ich tornistrów, piórników, podręczników, itp. Podczas Mszy Świętej o 9:00 rano. Po Mszy dzieci spotkają swoich nowych katechetów i wspólnie udadzą się na pierwszą w tym roku szkolnym katechezę w JREC (Joseph Rudawski Educational Center). Jako rodzina parafialna modlimy się o Boże błogosławieństwo na trud zdobywania wiedzy i wzrastania w łasce dla naszych najmłodszych parafian.

13 września: Zbiórka na Schronisko dla Kobiet W każdą drugą niedzielę miesiąca dochody uzyskane ze sprzedaży kawy oraz pączków w Domu Dziedzictwa Polskiego przeznaczone są na finansowanie kanapek sponsorowanych przez nas w schronisku dla bezdomnych kobiet i dzieci “Karen House”.

19 września: Turniej Golfowy “Polish Open” Wszystkich entuzjastów golfa zapraszamy na nasz 15-ty Turniej “Polish Open” z aukcją na rzecz Parafii w klubie golfowym “Falls Golf Course” w O’Fallon, MO. September 20: Investiture Ceremony

At the beginning of this year six of our parishioners have begun their seminary training, and are taking classes at the STEP Program through Notre Dame University. To symbolize their commitment to training for the holy orders of deacon, they will be solemnly vested with a clerical garb (cassock and a seminarian’s collar, which is slightly different from a clergy collar) during 9:00 a.m. Mass on September 20th. Such an outward sign serves as a visible symbol of one’s willingness to do the will of God in the service of God’s people. Na początku tego roku sześć osób z naszej parafii rozpoczęło formację seminaryjną i odbywa teraz studia w programie STEP na Uniwersytecie Notre Dame. Na znak ich poświęcenia w przygotowaniu do ewentualnego przyjęcia święceń diakonatu, zostaną oni obłóczeni (otrzymają sutannę i klerycki kołnierzyk, różniący się nieco od kapłańskiego) w niedzielę 20 września, podczas Mszy Świętej o godz. 9 rano. Ten zewnętrzny znak jest widzialnym symbolem gotowości w pełnieniu woli Bożej poprzez służbę Ludowi Bożemu. Bądźmy wdzięczni Panu Bogu za dar powołań w naszej wspólnocie!

The Blessing of animals is conducted in remembrance of St. Francis of Assisi’s love for all God’s creatures. We invite all the animals with their human friends to join us for a special outdoor Mass on Saturday, October 3rd at 4:00 p.m. Let this joyful and beautiful ceremony remind us of the sacredness of all life. During the month of September until the Blessing of the Animals Mass on October 3, the Sunday School classes will conduct a pet food collection to benefit Bi-State Pet Food Pantry serving 150 families and over 500 pets in need every month. A donation box will be located in back of the church during September with final donations to be made on October 3. Items needed are: Canned dog and cat food (unopened); dry dog and cat food (opened or unopened); dog and cat treats (opened or unopened); cat litter (opened or unopened). Na pamiątkę Św. Franciszka z Asyżu, który kochał nie tylko ludzi, ale wszystkie Boże stworzenia, w sobotę 3 października odbędzie się błogosławieństwo zwierząt. Wszystkie zwierzęta wraz z ich ludzkimi opiekunami zapraszamy na specjalną Mszę Św. na świeżym powietrzu o godz. 4:00 po południu. Niech ta radosna Msza i ceremonia przypomni nam o świętości każdego życia. W tym roku łączymy ten obrzęd ze zbiórką na potrzeby osób ubogich i ich zwierząt. It is time for another afternoon of fun playing Trivia! We will start at 12:30 p.m. in the small hall of the PHC. There will be a $5 per person entry fee which will be used for prize money. Chose your team, but try to limit the number to 7 or 8 players. Even if you do not have a team, we would love to have you join us anyway, and we will be glad to put a team together for you. On Sunday, October 18th, at 3:00 p.m. we will host once again The Bach Society of Saint Louis with another spectacular choral concert, “BRAVO Bach!” Included will be music from past concerts, representing all six of our conductors. The program also features Mary Wilson, a Young Artist from 1997-99, singing Handel’s Gloria for virtuoso soprano and strings, plus several pieces that will include alums of the Bach Society Chorus. On the last Sunday before the Eve of All Hallows we invite all our young friends, ages 17 and younger, to join us for a joyful “Trunk or Treat” celebration from 10:15 a.m. until 10:45 a.m. (between the Masses). Please dress in church appropriate customs to make sure that you will not get locked in church’s scary dungeon with all the vampires, demons, and such! Our adult members and friends are encouraged to come with trunks full of goodies and treat our youngsters with sweet generosity!

W ostatnią niedzielę przed uroczystością Wszystkich Świętych organizujemy zabawę Halloween na przykościelnym parkingu od 10:15 do 10:45 rano! Dzieci i młodzież poniżej 17 roku życia prosimy o przybycie w Halloween’owych kostiumach! Dorosłych zaś prosimy o wypełnienie bagażników swoich samochodów słodyczami - przebrane dzieci zamiast chodzić od domu do domu będą wędrowały od samochodu do samochodu oczekując na słodki poczęstunek.

October 31: All Saints Solemn Vespers

On the Eve of All Saints we will gather together at 5:00 p.m. to sing Solemn Vespers, or First Evening Prayer of that important holiday. As with the Jewish Sabbath, the Catholic, Anglican, and Orthodox Churches always begins their major feast days at dusk, the evening before the feast, with the praying of First Vespers. The service of Vespers is part of an ancient monastic tradition of Liturgy of the Hours, that is prayer services (or “offices”) that occur at different times/hours of each day: Lauds, Diurnal Offices, Vespers, and Compline. Please join us for this beautiful and very dignified liturgical prayer service, followed by a light reception.

W wigilę Wszystkich Świętych o godzinie 5:00 po południu będziemy celebrować w naszym kościele Uroczyste Nieszpory, lub też Pierwsze Modlitwy Wieczorne tego ważnego Święta. Katolicy, Anglikanie, i Prawosławni - wzorując się na Żydowskiej tradycji szabatowej - rozpoczynają obchody ważnych świąt wieczorem poprzedniego dnia odmawiając Nieszpory. Nieszpory to jedna z “godzin” (czyli modlitw) Liturgii Godzin: monastycznej tradycji uświęcania kolejnych pór dnia wspólnotową modlitwą liturgiczną. Zapraszamy wszystkich bardzo serdecznie na tą piękne i niezwykle podniosłe nabożeństwo, oraz na skromny poczęstunek po jego zakończeniu.

HISTORY OF POLAND: 1683 SIEGE OF VIENNA On September 12, 1683, 332 years ago, an alliance of Christian armies led by Jan Sobieski, the King of Poland, defeated the Ottoman army and liberated the city of Vienna. In previous years the Sultan’s armies overran Greece, Bulgaria, Romania, and Serbia. They turned Protestant Hungary into a compliant vassal and waged war repeatedly on Austria and the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth. The Ottomans had designs on Vienna, since the fall of the city would open the way into the heart of Austria and the rich principalities of Southern Germany. Having failed to take Vienna in the siege of 1529, the Turks prepared a second attempt in 1683. Under the leadership of the Grand Vizier, Pasha Kara Mustafa, they fought their way towards the capital, overrunning Austrian villages and smaller cities in their path and taking many captives. As the Muslim hordes approached Vienna, King Leopold fled west with most of the citizens, leaving a garrison of about 11,000 soldiers and 5,000 citizen volunteers to hold the city against the Turks. On July 16th, 1683, the second siege of Vienna began. The tiny garrison in the city was no match for Kara Mustafa’s army of 140,000, but the Grand Vizier decided to starve the city into submission rather than attempt a frontal assault on its defenses. Austria and Poland had long been traditional enemies, only lately coming to an alliance in the face of the common threat. Poland had traditionally been allied with France, but the French were devious even in alliance, especially under Louis XIV, the Sun King. Louis had designs on the German states along the Rhine, and conducted his diplomacy with an eye towards the main chance in Luxembourg or the Rhenish Palatinates. All of these squabbling political entities were Catholic, and theoretically united under the leadership of Rome. Pope Innocent XI recognized the danger posed by the Ottomans, and called on all the rulers of Central Europe to unite against the common foe and save Vienna. Louis XIV declined to obey his pontiff, and continued his scheming. Jan Sobieski, on the other hand, was ready to answer the Pope’s call. However, in order to go to war, Polish law required him to get the unanimous approval of the Polish Diet. The French king’s ambassador piled members of the Diet with massive bribes to induce them to vote against the King’s venture. Through most of the summer it seemed that Sobieski would be unable to ride to Vienna. Fortunately for the Austrians, and for Christendom, Pope Innocent authorized the papal nuncio in Kraków to use the full resources of the Vatican. The nuncio was able to outbid Louis in bribery, but only barely. In the end the Diet reached unanimity and authorized their King to ride to the relief of Vienna.

When the King of Poland set off for Vienna in early September, the Viennese garrison was in desperate straits. The people of the city were starving, and the city had suffered serious damage from the Turkish bombardment. The Ottoman army had ample gunpowder, and their engineers dug mines under the walls and set off a number of charges that did serious damage and opened gaps in the walls. The Viennese rallied to build barriers in the gaps, and managed to keep the Turks out, but it was only a matter of time until Kara Mustafa succeeded. The Viennese garrison prepared for a lastditch defense within the city walls. It was then, at the last possible moment on the evening of September 11th, that Jan Sobieski arrived at a hill north of the city, leading a force of 40,000 Poles and their German and Austrian allies. The battle began soon afterwards, in the early morning hours of September 12th. The Austrians and Germans attacked the Turks first at the center and on the left flank. The Turks counterattacked, but held back a significant portion of their forces in anticipation of entering the city through a breach in the wall. At about the same time the King of Poland, with the fearsome Winged Hussars and with 20,000 men behind him, led a cavalry charge down the hill into the right flank of the Ottoman army. The Hussars were one of the most formidable fighting forces of the time, and the sound of the wind through the feathers of their artificial wings was said to unnerve the enemies’ horses and drive superstitious soldiers into a panic. The battle was over in three hours. The King drove through the Turkish lines, and, seeing his success, the Vienna garrison rallied forth from the city and hit the Turks from the rear. Demoralized by these attacks and their failure to breach the wall, the Turks fled eastwards in haste, abandoning their tents, weapons, battle standards, provisions, and slaves. The siege was broken and the city was saved. Jan Sobieski was received as the hero of Vienna. Though it was not evident at the time, the Ottoman tide had turned at the Gates of Vienna and was about to recede, beginning its long withdrawal through the Balkans and Greece into Asia Minor over the next two centuries. What is striking about Jan Sobieski is the quality of his leadership. More important than arms, manpower, tactics, supplies, and even courage, leadership is what makes the difference in any war. When Jan Sobieski led his men down that hill into the Ottoman flank, it was his presence at the front of the charge that demonstrated his dauntless nature and absolute determination. Character cannot be faked, and men who recognize this kind of character in their leader will follow him into the gates of Hell.

ŚWIĘTY MIESIĄCA

The deathbed confession of a dying servant opened Vincent's eyes to the crying spiritual needs of the peasantry of France. This seems to have been a crucial moment in the life of the man from a small farm in Gascony, France, who had become a priest with little more ambition than to have a comfortable life.

Spowiedź na łożu śmierci jednego ze służących otworzyła oczy Wincentego na wielkie potrzeby duchowe ludzi ubogich. Był to z pewnością przełomowy moment w życiu tego człowieka pochodzącego z Gascone we Francji. Stał się on wkrótce znany jako kapłan, którego nie zadawala komfortowe życie i zwykłe ambicje kościelnej kariery. Księżna de Gondi, do której należał wspomniany służący, przekonała swojego męża by szczodrze sponsorował grupę gorliwych misjonarzy oddanych pracy wśród służących i najuboższych we Francji. Wincenty wzbraniał się początkowo przed przyjęciem funkcji lidera tej grupy, ale po krótkim czasie poświęconym pracy z więźniami i niewolnikami na galerach w Paryżu, zaakceptował pozycję przełożonego Zgromadzenia Misjonarzy. Owi kapłani, po złożeniu ślubów ubóstwa, czystości, posłuszeństwa oraz stabilności, oddali się całkowicie pracy charytatywnej we wsiach i małych miasteczkach.

It was the Countess de Gondi (whose servant he had helped) who persuaded her husband to endow and support a group of able and zealous missionaries who would work among the poor, the vassals and tenants and the country people in general. Vincent was too humble to accept leadership at first, but after working for some time in Paris among imprisoned galley-slaves, he returned to be the leader of what is now known as the Congregation of the Mission, or the Vincentians. These priests, with vows of poverty, chastity, obedience and stability, were to devote themselves entirely to the people in smaller towns and villages. Later Vincent established confraternities of charity for the spiritual and physical relief of the poor and sick of each parish. From these, with the help of St. Louise de Marillac, came the Daughters of Charity, "whose convent is the sickroom, whose chapel is the parish church, whose cloister is the streets of the city." He organized the rich women of Paris to collect funds for his missionary projects, founded several hospitals, collected relief funds for the victims of war and ransomed over 1,200 galley slaves from North Africa. He was zealous in conducting retreats for clergy at a time when there was great laxity, abuse and ignorance among them. He was a pioneer in clerical training and was instrumental in establishing seminaries. Most remarkably, Vincent was by temperament a very irascible person - even his friends admitted it. He said that except for the grace of God he would have been "hard and repulsive, rough and cross." But he became a tender and affectionate man, very sensitive to the needs of others. Pope Leo XIII made him the patron of all charitable societies. Outstanding among these, of course, is the Society of St. Vincent de Paul, founded in 1833 by his admirer Blessed Frederic Ozanam.

Z tych grup powstały później, z pomocą Św. Luizy de Marillac, Siostry Miłosierdzia, “których klasztorem jest izba chorego, których kaplicą jest parafialny kościół i których klauzurą są ulice miast.” Z pomocą bogatych paryskich dam Wincenty fundował liczne projekty misyjne, założył kilka szpitali, a nawet wykupił z niewoli ponad 1200 niewolników z Afryki. Gorliwie oddawał się prowadzeniu rekolekcji dla kapłanów i pomagał zakładać pierwsze seminaria duchowne. Warto zauważyć, że z natury był Wincenty bardzo łatwo irytującym się człowiekiem i on sam zdawał sobie z tego sprawę. Mówił, że bez Bożej łaski byłby ciężkim do zniesienia, szorstkim i gniewnym mężczyzną. W tym samym czasie potrafił on jednak być pełnym zrozumienia, łagodności i współczucia wobec potrzeb chorych i ubogich. Papież Leon XIII ogłosił Wincentego a Paulo patronem stowarzyszeń charytatywnych, wśród których jest też dobrze znane Towarzystwo Św. Wincentego a Paulo, założone w 1833 roku przez Bł. Fryderyka Ozanam.

RITE OF CHRISTIAN INITIATION OF ADULTS Our parish continues to offer the RCIA program. It is an eight months long process whereby those interested in learning about the Catholic faith come together on a weekly basis (every Sunday after Mass) to learn about the Scriptures and the teachings of the Church, and at the same time to discover where God is present in their lives. The process is designed for those adults who are unbaptized, baptized in another Christian tradition, or baptized but not confirmed Catholics. Classes start in September. If you, or someone you know is interested, please contact Parish Office. Our Parish Movie Club meets every other Thursday at 6:00 p.m. in the Rectory. Fall Festival Request for Help As many of the regular Fall Festival committee heads cannot continue this year, I am looking for new committee heads for the 2015 Fall Festival. I volunteered to again lead the Fall Festival, but I cannot do it alone. While many of the former committee heads will help to run the areas, I am looking for other individuals to take charge and lead the following areas: Someone is needed to run the kitchen, the bar, the silent auction, the bakery areas and the wine booth. Remember, you will have help. We are also in the process of collecting silent auction baskets and wine booth donations. The Fall Festival Committee would appreciate all contributions!
