Biological Oxygen Demand The Biological Oxygen Demand is an important parameter in water resource management. It is a quantity used for the quality of water and the purification power of biological wastewater treatment stages. In addition it is essential in the planning and dimensioning of sewage treatment plants. In routine use BOD determination is used to check the wastewater in the inflow and discharge of sewage treatment plants. Depending on the measurement site and type of wastewater the BOD value can lie between a few mg/l and several thousand mg/l. Several methods are available for carrying out the measurement. WTW offers various measuring systems for these methods. In “dilution BOD” the oxygen content of a sample is measured with an oxygen sensor before and after an incubation period of 5 days. The difference between the measurements is the BOD5 value; this method is officially recognized. In “BOD self-checks” with the respirometer the reduction in oxygen causes a definite pressure difference which can be measured by a pressure sensor. This method is very easy to carry out and is a practical method. As these two methods are basically very different they only correlate for a few samples which, however, have a practical relevance such as in the discharge channels of municipal sewage treatment plants. In both cases the samples must be kept at 20 °C for 5 days. WTW offers a wide range of suitable thermostatted equipment.

Despite all discussions about quicker alternative methods, the determination of the biological oxygen demand BOD has not become any less important. On the contrary, it is still one of the most important measurements for the management of water resources and allows statements to be made about the loading of waters and wastewater with biodegradable substances. The importance of the respirometric BOD measurement is also shown by the inclusion of the “Determination of the biochemical oxygen demand after n-days (BODn) in a respirometer – extension of the method according to DIN EN 1899-2 (H55)” as a proposal for a German standard method in the 46th installment 2000 of the DEV.

Criticisms of the conventional manometric measuring systems have mainly concerned the use of mercury for measuring the pressure. Mercury is toxic and if not handled properly it produces vapors which are injurious to health. With the development of the OxiTop® systems, WTW has fulfilled a worldwide customer wish – mercury-free BOD determinations. With OxiTop® WTW now offers a unique and modular mercury-free BOD instrument system which has been developed for daily practical use. OxiTop® alters the previous handling process in a revolutionary manner.

The patented measuring head contains the following items: ● 1 Piezoelectric pressure sensor ● 2 Operating keys: M for showing the momentary value; S for showing the stored value ● 2-place LED, displaying 00 to 50 “scale divisions”. 1 scale division corresponds to 3.55 hPa. A correct measurement should only show scale divisions up to 40; with larger values the sensible measuring range has already been exceeded so that the display only serves for orientation purposes. ● Data memory for 5 measurements at daily intervals. Comfortable BOD determination with the OxiTop® Control system The OxiTop® Control system is the logical further development of the successful OxiTop® system. • Instead of the display and keys the OxiTop®-C measuring head has an infrared interface with which it communicates with Controller OC 100 or OC 110. • The Controller OC 100/OC 110 can manage up to 100 OxiTop®-C measuring heads.

The measuring head stores 180 to 360 data sets (depending on set running time) which can be called up at any time in the Controller and where they are shown graphically. Call-up is by collect call or selectively by “pointing” to the required measuring head. Each measuring head has its own identification; this means that manual identification is no longer necessary.

Stirrers IS 6 and IS 12 have been specially developed for BOD measurement with the OxiTop® system. With the aid of a software-controlled speed alteration system the stirrer always catches the stirrer bar so that it cannot remain stationary nor can it wobble about. The sample is simply placed on a stirrer and the magnetic stirrer bar will start rotating properly in the center without any problems. The speed is selected so that an optimal gas exchange with the sample takes place. The stirrer is maintenance-free and non-wearing as it contains no moving parts.

Example of an application: OxiTop® Box with OxiTop® Control 12

Thermostat box with forced air circulation for 20 ± 1 °C OxiTop® Box is a benchtop model with hinged clear-view cover which can accommodate a maximum of either 12 OxiTop® measuring places or 20 Karlsruhe bottles. The chamber is equipped with a connection for an IS 6 or IS 12 stirrer. A special compartment is provided for thermostatting 6 methylene blue samples. The box is made of non-corrosive materials and the compressor is CFC-free. A cross-flow fan ensures uniform temperature distribution. The box has an automatic defrosting system with condensate evaporation.

Thermostats

Sizes /2 and /4 are available with transparent insulating glass doors. Alternatively all thermostat cabinets can be provided with a variable temperature controller, range +5 ... +40 °C.

Customer Service

As the samples must be additionally stirred the thermostat cabinets are fitted with internal sockets to provide the stirrers with electricity.

Depending on the thermostat cabinet size up to 48 samples can be thermostatted simultaneously.

Photometry

BOD5 values must be determined at a constant temperature of 20 °C. If this requirement cannot be realized at the workplace then a thermostat cabinet in which the samples can be placed for the duration of the test is required.
