SEMIANNUAL REPORT March 2009 - September 2009 University of Guanajuato Chapter In this second annual report we compliment the activities done during the year September 2008 – September 2009. We’ve selected new chapter officers and as some members end their time with us others star to continue the work bringing fresh ideas to improve our chapter.

I. NEW CHAPTER OFFICERS President: Daniel Jáuregui Vice-president: Mónica Hernández Secretary: Mariana Villagomez Treasurer: Rosa Pérez Advisor: Igor Sukoivanov

II. MEMBERS As we mentioned above is necessary to count on new members in order to fill the spaces leaved by the ones who have gone to keep growing as a student chapter. As always, we’ve been working on this area during the year to maintain a solid chapter and become one of the most representative student associations of our university. Now we show the list of the actual members of the chapter. Rosa Aguilera Erick Ayala Manuel Alejandro Carbajal

III. ACTIVITIES

Introductory talk to new students of our faculty In our faculty there are admissions exams every three months. Since in our school there are many student chapters of different associations depending of the mayors that are in our school we got together to make a presentation for the new students of the work that each student chapter does. We presented in April 2009 and July 2009. We talk about SPIE in general and more about the work we do in our chapter, what we’ve done and what we’re planning to do. 1.

2.

Stand WiO “Día de la mujer” March 8th 2009. As a part of the celebration of the International Women’s Day our faculty mounted several stands relative to the working woman. We participate with our stand Women in Optics showing the work that women in our chapter have done in our chapter. We also presented articles, pictures and information of women that work within SPIE. Over 100 students visited our stand during the day.

3.

Visit from “Academia de niños en la ciencia” April 25th. Our faculty forms part of the “Academy of children in science”. Its main activity is to take children to visit universities and faculties of our state to show them, in a simple way, what science is about. In our faculty we have many areas of investigation on mechanics, electrical and electronics. We help the optoelectronic group by showing and doing experiments with the kids. Our main objective is that they learn some basic principles on optics and how we can find many optic phenomena in our environment and in nature.

Lecture: “Passively mode-locked figure-8 fiber laser” June 12th 2009. We had the opportunity to count with the visit of Dr. Olivier Pottiez from CIO (Centro de Investigaciones en Óptica; León, Guanajuato.) who presented us part of his present research interests that include the study of fiber Sagnac interferometers for applications in ultrafast photonics, ultrashort pulse generation, or optical characterization. We had the assistance of members of the student chapter and students of our faculty.

Dr. Julián M. Estudillo goodbye party June 19 2009. Dr. Julian Estudillo is one of the members of the optoelectronic group of the faculty. He has been a great support to the chapter and now he’s doing a post PhD

in the UK for a year. And to show him that we appreciate him very much we organized a little party to say goodbye and wish him the best of luck there.

6.

Lecture: “Dispositivos en fibras ópticas” June 23th 2009. Dr. Romeo Selvas from UANL (Universidad Autónoma de Nuevo León; San José de las Garzas, Nuevo León) presented us a talk about optic fiber devices. He presented his work that he has done in his university and a general view of what they do in the group of optics of UANL. 7.

Visit from “Academia de niños en la ciencia” Continuing with our participation with the academy for kids in science with had the visit of a students of another primary school. We show them many experiments to the kids.

8.

Lecture: “Aplicación de RF y Micro-ondas para el control de plagas” July 24th 2009. Dra María Elena Sosa Morales from UDLA (Universidad de las Américas; Puebla, Puebla) talked about plague control using RF and microwaves. Although this chat doesn’t fit on optics very much it gave us another knowledge about the applications of electromagnetic waves and their impact on industry and other fields.

9.

Lecture: “La importancia de los defectos en nano-estructuras de carbono y sus aplicaciones tecnologicas“ August 6th 2009. Dr. Mauricio Terrones from IPICYT (Instituto Potosino de Investigación científica y Tecnológica; San Luis Potosí, San Luis Potosí) gave us a talk about the importance of defects on carbon nanostructures and their technologic applications. We counted with the assistance of students of electronic and mechanical engineering and this gave us an idea of the multiple areas where optics has an important impact.

10.

4th Optoelectronic seminary Summer 2009 As a part of one of our constant activities we continue with the seminary in which participate students, members of the chapter and professors of the optoelectronic group of our faculty. Once a week we get together to present a talk about our personal work and share it with the group. In this occasion we have the next participations:

Janette Perez Chimal Ing. Claudio Valencia Loredo

“Report of Activities from the Student Chapter Leadership Workshop 2009”

Ing. Omar E. Nieto Zarate

“Study of a Guided Beam by Periodic Photonic Structures”

Dr. Edgar Alvarado Méndez

“Non Linear Optics”

Stand informativo reclutamiento de miembros del July 27th, 28th and 29th 2009. Continuing with our labor of divulgation we set an informative stand to show to every student of the school what we do. The main objective of this stand was to get new students interested in optics so they can join our student chapter. We think that the result of this activity was very good cause we get many new members.

IV. WEB SITE We have created our web site where we report our news, activities, events and information of the work that we’ve done. We update it continuously to update our activities done by our chapter. Know we have the English version updated too.
