CON VERDADERO orgullo presentamos esta edicion del AIRPOST JOURNAL dedicada ala America Latina. La idea de esta edicion fue originada por nuestro primer Editor Senor Walter J. Conrath; los actuales Editores tienen el privilegio de completar los planes que fueron interrumpidos por su fallecimiento prematuro. Los Aero-filatelistas mas prominentes de las Americas han contribuido galantemente para hacer esta edicion unica en su presentacion. Nos damos cuenta de que los lazos que unen a los pueblos de las Americas se pueden estrechar mas, aunque no hablamos el mismo idioma, y por este motivo presentamos este numero bilingue . . Parte del texto esta presentado en Espanol y parte en Ingles; algunos de los articulos importantes o de interes general se encuentran en ambas lenguas. I T IS WITH considerable pride that we present the Latin-American Good Will number of The Airpost Journal. Originally conceived by former Editor Walter J. Conrath, your present Editors are now privileged to complete the plans interrupted by his untimely passing. This issue will be found unique in its presentation. The most prominent Aero-philatelists of all the Americas have contributed to its pages. In full realization that the common bond between the people of the Americas CAN be cemented-if one but wishes-through the very LACK of a common language (contrary to the usual views on this subject), this issue is presented bi-lingually. Part of the text will be found in Spanish -part in English. Some of the more important or appropriate features will be found in both languages. Through knowledge of each other, and of the personalities and problems of each other, better appreciation and understanding must inevitably follow. That is our sincere wish.

Agosto 16. 1943 Muy estimado Seiior Gatchell: Me ha proporcionado un gran placer el poder participar en la edicion especial del Airpost Journal en homenaje a las Republicas Latino-Americanas. La co1eccion de estampillas es talvez la unica distraccion que facilita a sus adeptos un conocimiento extenso respecto a lo que se va llevando a cabo en paises extranjeros. ya que es necesario investigar o saber el proposito con que fueron emitidos los sellos, el significado de sus paisajes nacionales, de los retratos y de los dibujos simbolicos elegidos para su decoracion. Las estampillas aereas y las cubiertas estampadas con cancelaciones especiales, las cuales realmente no son mas que itineraries que simbolizan la historia de nuestra rapida civilizacion, dando un interes y atractivo especial al pasatiempo de coleccionar sellos. Agradezco la oportunidad que se me ha presentado, a traves de su cortesia, para enviar mis felicitaciones a los ciudadanos de este pais y a los de aquellos de la Union Panamericana que estan interesados en las vias postales aereas tan extensamente utilizadas para unir los pensamientos de las lej an as Americas. (Continuacion de la Pagina 398) de les estampillas corrientes de los miembros de la Union Postal, no es sorprendente que este material sea muy escaso. Con pocas excepciones no hay nada de particular interes en el ramo de "Muestras" . Chile y Terranova no sobre-imprimen sus estampillas para este proposito; las perforan. En el caso de Terranova la "Muestra" ("Specimen" en Ingles) perforado se compone de 4 estampillas.

• Panama

Muestras Sin La Palabra "Muestra" La emision conmemorativa de Espana de 1940, conocida como serie de "la Virgen del Pilar", no puede distinguirse de las emitidas, a no ser que las estampillas se miren por detras. Si son " Muestras" el control del reves consiste en seis (000,000) ceros en lugar de numeros progresivos. El Catalogo Sanabria Hasta ahora, el coleccionista aficionado a pruebas y ensayos se encontraba perdido en materia de asistencia en forma de catalogo para esta clase de material y tenia que depender de su conocimiento personal en este campo practicamente inexplorado. Ahora el catalogo Sanabria da una extensa lista de pruebas de las estampillas aereas. Describe y pone el precio de cerca de 700 v~riedades. Sin duda alguna, un considerable numero de otras ex~s~e y sera incluido en las proximas ed1c10nes de este importante catalogo. Todavia hay mucho que ap~ender ac~,rca de pruebas, ensayos Y Muestras y yo creo que el tema merece la atencion de asiduos especialistas de correo aereo. ""' 4

Ventas Por Correa generalmente contienen cientos de lotes interesantes de • Cuba "Muestras" De Estampillas No Emitidas . Las ilustraciones que se ven arriba son "Muestras" de estampillas que nunca fueron lanzadas a la circulacion. Al final de 1935, la Sociedad Colombina auspicio un grupo de emisiones conmemoratives de Colon, para Cuba, Ecuador y Panama. Ecuador las lanzo a la circulacion, en tanto que Cuba y Panama no, pero las " Muestras" probablemente fueron a la Union Postal, en cuyo caso parece haber sido una determinacion de ultimo momento de Cuba y Panama de no emitir estos sellos conmemorativos.

The signs of our times become more encouraging as the peoples of the Latin American Countries and the United States get to know each other better. Day by day, effort is expended and steps are taken toward further cementing good feeling between the United States and the countries of Latin America. In scores of unrelated events, there is evidence that the Inter-American program - spurred by necessity for mutual defense, and by a sincere desire for friendly cooperation and help - is on a firmer footing than ever before. We sincerely hope that the publishing of this special issue will be another step in the same direction.

by RAFAEL ORIOL ~ S EARLY as the discovery of · ..t'UAmerica by Christopher Columbus, the island of Cuba began to achieve international renown. Cuba has maintained this fame since the beginning of the 15th Century because it was a necessary stop-over point for all boats that went to Mexi- · co and Central America. Therefore, it is logical to assume that from the start of the second decade of the Twentieth Century, when commercial aviation began to develop after the first World War, Cuba would take the lead and serve as an example to all the Americas. It stands like a flaming torch to all the pilots, lighting and guiding them on their pioneer missions, from the time of the first experimental flights to present day routine operations, when hundreds of planes are constantly crossing our island and landing on the many airports which have been constructed in our six provinces. Along the coastline, on the Northern as well as the Southern coast, Cuba has numerous protected bays, where a great number of flying-boats can land in safety. The same thing can be said of the land itself, where the terrain from Cape San Antonio to the tip of Maisi is generally flat. There are only three mountainous regions, and even these have deep and wide valleys, wide enough to establish magnificent airports. RO.t\D
