CO’s Stateroom— Carolina Piedmont Base Commander Rick Petitt well. This month I have submitted a grant request to Walmart to help us in funding the Kap(ss)4Kid(ss)program. I have a couple of other corporate programs that I will look into as well for funding for some of our other programs, memorials and community related events.

The end of another year is here and if you are reading this article, then you are doing OK. It has been a very busy month for all of us with Thanksgiving and Christmas shopping and hopefully lots of family events. I am not sure about you but I think I have had enough turkey for a long time. Also I am sure you, like me, will be glad to move on to a new fresh year and perhaps everything will improve. I hope so. Amongst all the holiday events, our base has been busy as

Last month we lost another World War II submarine veteran, Joe Clark, from the Nat Greene base and several of us from Carolina Piedmont attended the memorial service. Many of you may have known him personally or ridden with him on board the torpedo float. He was a wonderful, spirited individual and he was loved and respected by his family, friends, and his shipmates. We are losing our shipmates at a very rapid pace so make sure to maintain contact with all our friends, especially those on the binnacle list.

ment even more relevant. I encourage everyone to participate in one of our many programs. Among all our programs we have: Bilge Rat Productions, Color Guard, Submarine Education Program, Eagle Scout Presentation, Flag Etiquette Presentation, and Kap(ss)4 Kid(ss) events. There are many venues that we have not yet explored to present the K4K program such as children homes, Ronald McDonald House, etc. I look forward to seeing you this month at our December Christmas meeting. Plan on staying after our event for the live entertainment provided by the VFW. Rick Petitt

This past week I presented a young Eagle Scout with the USSVI certificate and patch and did the little presentation about Captain Fluckey. I am always amazed at how well the scouts and their families receive this little presentation. It really makes a special and inspirational impact on the crowd and it makes this accomplish-

XO’s Stateroom — Vice Commander Jack Jeffries HO HO HO its that time of year. Wow where did 2016 go to? I would like to start off by wishing each and every one of you a Joyous Holiday Period, please remember the reason for the season. This year has seen many issues come and go. New members, new direction for some projects and new hope for the coming year, speaking of that, it is really time now to renew your dues both base and national.. I have put out many messages concerning this and laid out the consequences of letting it go and not renewing in a timely manner, if you are having a little trouble with this matter, please let us know. How about that meal we had in November? Thanks go to Rick

and Cindy for donating and frying the turkeys and all the ladies for their great side dishes and deserts. Really not to much to put out except we have both an Eagle Scout presentation this month that Rick will be presenting and we have a NJROTC presentation in Waxhaw. I am beginning to schedule schools for the Submariner Story and if you would like to have one in your area, please contact me and I will try to make it happen. I would like to welcome George Davis to our base, George lives in Charlotte with his wife Kendra. That is is just about all I have for this month, probably after it goes to press more will pop in my head, oh well I just have to remember it for the rest of this year and tell you about it next year. OLD BUSINESS Torpedo Float The torpedo float is stored in the Asheboro Aviation Museum and as NC Subvets we are now in the process of becoming – as a group – a patron of the Asheboro Aviation Museum. The cost for becoming a “patron” is $125/year. A motion passed last meeting for Carolina Piedmont Base to contribute $50/year towards the combined patron membership.

Burnsville Moonshine Mountain Memorial Restoration Fund Funds are actively being raised now for the significant drainage repairs/improvements needed for the Moonshine Mountain submarine memorial site located near Burnsville NC. The Asheville Base is maintaining the funds being accumulated for the memorial’s restoration. A motion was passed at our October meeting for Carolina Piedmont base to contribute 1000 dollars from our general fund towards the memorial repairs; that donation has been since been satisfied. A challenge is still outstanding from CP base member Ray Fritz that he will contribute 1000 dollars of his own money when other Carolina Piedmont base members collectively contribute an amount of 1000 dollars towards the memorial repairs. Ray went on to explain that his late wife’s (Diana’s) father was a WWII Subvet. Ray also said that Diana liked to visit the Moonshine Mountain Memorial. As of tonight’s meeting base treasurer Raymond Zieverink reported 70% of the base’s individual donations have been contributed towards Ray’s challenge. Finally, Rick notified us that the Nat Greene Base is donating a model of the WWII Submarine USS HAKE (SS-256) to be raffled off to raise additional funds for the Burnsville Memorial restoration. Tickets will be sold through all 6 NC Subvets bases and the raffle will conclude with a drawing at the annual meeting at the Burnsville memorial next May. NOTE: For more information on the submarine model, see Jack Jeffries email titled “Donated Submarine Model for a Raffle” dated Monday 11/14/2016. NEW BUSINESS None SK REPORT Our base storekeeper Jeff Nieberding reported we have received our 2017 USSVI calendars and all orders for calendars can now be picked up at our remaining meeting. Calendars are $8 each. This year’s theme is “Historical Classes of Boats” and Jeff has a couple of extra calendars for sale if you didn’t put in an order. Jeff also is available for whatever items members need to order; patches, vests, challenge coins, etc. GOOD OF THE ORDER Kings Bay 2016

November Meeting Minutes Continued

Rick reported that base members who attended the 2016 Kings Bay Submarine Veterans WWII Memorial event were treated to a very enjoyable visit. A tour of submarine USS Maryland was made available to event participants, guests were treated to multiple outstanding meals during their visit to the base and the base also honored participants by opening up access to base facilities like the Navy Exchange.

Dues Reminder: The time to pay dues for 2017 is running out. If dues are not paid by mid-January to National those effected members will be dropped from membership rolls. Many members paid up at this month’s meeting but a long list of unpaid members still exists. Dues can be paid to our Base Treasurer Raymond Zieverink before the end of the calendar year but if you are not planning on attending December’s meeting (and haven’t paid your 2017 dues yet) you will need to contact Raymond Zieverink directly before the beginning of January. National dues are $25/year or $70 for 3 years or $115 for 5 years. Base dues are $10/year or $27.50 for 3 years or $45 for 5 years.

Mark your calendar! February 10th at 7:15 PM is the game chosen for this year’s CPB at the Charlotte Checker’s Game. The Checkers will host the Stockton Heat from California. We will sit again in the Attack Zone which are the $16.09 per seat tickets. Each one attending will receive a Charlotte Checker Ball Cap. Now I have 20 tickets on hold, the minimum for a group, let’s go beyond that. Last year we had 44 or 46 tickets sold. These go on my account, so I may be “hounding” until the game. Contact me at 980-422-2749 or email [email protected]. See you at the game and hopefully sooner at a meeting. – Moe(SS)

It also reminds me of the winter when I was in Aux Pac school in Groton and I would visit the then new Submarine Force Museum in Groton (because I was broke and it was free to get in and I was NUB and I all I wanted was to get to a boat and get qualified and this was an opportunity to spend time on a real submarine the Nautilus) Yeah, Yeah I get it I am a kid..

Here we are closing out another trip around the sun! Time to wish one and all a, “Merry Christmas” and a “Happy Prosperous New Year”! Quite often while I am reading my Bible, my mind starts trying to connect all the dots and I become overwhelmed with just how “Awesome” our God is! If you take a mental journey through the books of the Bible, beginning with the wondrous creation of everything in Genesis, continue through all the trails, tribulations, miracles, teachings, lawlessness, rebellions, examples of mercy, grace and provision, then concluding in the book of Revelations………..our God is beyond “Awesome”! One word cannot describe, de-

fine, explain or portray our God, that is why He gave us the Holy Bible, so we can study, learn and attempt to understand the significance of what He has shared with us. Then we need to reflect on the fact that not only has He shared a complete collection of “Truth”, He has commissioned each and every one of us to share that “Truth” so that all may be saved! 26 In the sixth month, God sent the angel Gabriel to Nazareth, a town in Galilee, 27 to a virgin pledged to be married to a man named Joseph, a descendant of David. The virgin’s name was Mary. 28 The angel went to her and said,” Greetings, you who are highly favored! The Lord is with you.” Luke 1:26-28 NIV We know the dialogue continues to reveal that Mary will be with child through immaculate conception and that child will be Jesus, our “Lord and Savior”. This is the reason we observe Christmas, to share the gift of “Good News” that is the “Truth” of the Bible, this is the greatest gift we can give anyone! So as we gather with family and friends to observe and celebrate Christmas, don’t forget to do the most important job you have ever been assigned……………………..share with all you come in contact with, go out of your way to ask people (whom God has put in your path), do you know Jesus Christ, our Lord and Savior?! In this gesture, you are honoring God and doing what you are intended to do!

“MERRY CHRISTMAS AND HAPPY NEW YEAR TO ONE AND ALL, KNOW THAT YOU ARE LOVED AND PROVIDED FOR, BY OUR AWESOM GOD!

Hope to see you all at this month’s meeting! Be well and God Bless! Tom L. Hulme ontheroadhulme@ live.com cell: 419-606-0093

Bilge Rat Productions Become a “Rat”! The “Bilge Rats”, as legend has come to call them (ha), are looking for new volunteers to join there group of “traveling performers”. The Bilge Rats comb the area to find various Assisted Living Homes that will let them perform and demonstrate their spectacular talents (ha, again; or ha-ha?) They put-on a “Halfway Night Show” for the local residents. The Bilge Rat are made-up of SubVettes and Base members (many with low

standards, ha-ha-ha). So if you can sing, play an instrument, or just lip-sync like and want to have a good time like the rest of the “Bilge Rats’, then you need to join us. Really it is a rewarding experience. This will start our sixth season. We do skits, sing-alongs, anything to get the “old folk” to have a good time and bring some much needed smiles.

Even the “higher ups” have to listen to common sense...

Navy scraps plan to dump job titles amid sailors' complaints Published December 20, 2016 WASHINGTON – The Navy is scrapping its decision to eliminate dozens of enlisted sailors' job titles, including many that end in "man," after hitting an onslaught of opposition from the force. The decision to drop long-held traditional titles and instead refer to sailors by their rank was announced in September and signaled a sharp cultural shift for the Navy. Three months later, after hearing persistent complaints and questions from sailors around the world, Navy leaders are going back to the drawing board. Adm. John Richardson, the chief of naval operations, said in a memo that modernizing the job ratings or titles was designed to give sailors more flexibility in training and assignments. Switching to names more understandable to the civilian world, Navy leaders argued, would make it easier to get jobs once sailors left the service. But after hearing angry feedback from thousands of sailors, Richardson said Navy leaders believe they can find a way to provide better job flexibility without dropping the titles. "We have learned from you, and so effective immediately, all rating names are restored," he said. The memo will be publicly released at 8 a.m. Eastern time Wednesday 12/21, and sailors can expect to see correspondence from Navy leaders. Richardson outlined what he called a "course correction" in the memo, saying the Navy will continue to review ways to update the names. "Modernizing our industrial-age personnel system in order to provide sailors choice and flexibility still remains a priority for us," he said. "We will need to tackle the issue of managing rating names." The Navy called for a review of the titles in January, shortly after the Pentagon ordered that all combat jobs would now be open to women. The idea was to eliminate titles such as "chief yeoman," ''corpsman" or "boatswain's mate" — titles steeped in tradition but difficult for the public to translate or understand. Under the plan, sailors would be known by their ranks, such as petty officer or chief. And job titles would be made more gender-neutral. Navy Secretary Ray Mabus, who pushed the plan, said at the time that he wanted titles to better convey the job a sailor is doing. For example, few civilians know what a hospital corpsman does, Mabus said in a June interview. A corpsman could be called a medic or an emergency medical technician, much like "messman" was previously changed to culinary specialist, he added.

Sailors, however, protested the decision, launching a White House petition and gaining some support from Capitol Hill. They said that while they liked the idea of more flexibility, they wanted to hold onto their traditional titles. It's unclear now whether the move to make titles gender neutral will continue. Richardson said that sailors who want to provide input can email their ideas to: [email protected]

Retired Husband After I retired, my wife insisted that I accompany her on her trips to Wal-Mart. Unfortunately, like most men, I found shopping boring and preferred to get in and get out. Equally unfortunate, my wife is like most women - she loves to browse. Yesterday, my dear wife received the following letter from the local Wal-Mart: Dear Mrs. Harris: Over the past six months, your husband has caused quite a commotion in our store. We cannot tolerate this behavior and have been forced to ban him from the store. Our complaints against your husband, Mr. Harris, are listed below and are documented by our video surveillance cameras: 1. June 15: took 24 boxes of condoms and randomly put them in other people's carts when they weren't looking. 2. July 2: set all the alarm clocks in Housewares to go off at 5-minute intervals. 3. July 7: made a trail of tomato juice on the floor leading to the women's restroom. 4. July 19: walked up to an employee and told her in an official voice, 'Code 3 in Housewares. Get on it right away'. This caused the employee to leave her assigned station and receive a reprimand from her Supervisor that in turn resulted with a union grievance, causing management to lose time and costing the company money. We don't have a Code 3. 5. August 4: went to the Service Desk and tried to put a bag of M&Ms on layaway. 6. August 14: moved a 'CAUTION - WET FLOOR' sign to a carpeted area. 7. August 15: set up a tent in the camping department and told the children shoppers he'd invite them in if they would bring pillows and blankets from the bedding department.......more than twenty children obliged. 8. August 23: when a clerk asked if they could help him, he began crying and screaming, 'Why can't you people just leave me alone?' EMTs responded. 9. September 4: looked right into the security camera and used it as a mirror while he picked his nose. 10. September 10: while handling guns in the hunting department he asked the clerk where the antidepressants were. 11. October 3: darted around the store suspiciously while loudly humming the 'Mission Impossible' theme. 12. October 6: in the auto department, he practiced his 'Madonna Look' using different sizes of funnels. 13. October 18: hid in a clothing rack and when people browsed through, yelled, 'PICK ME! PICK ME!' 14. October 22: when an announcement came over the loud speaker, he assumed a fetal position on the floor and screamed, 'OH NO! IT'S THOSE VOICES AGAIN!' 15. October 25: took a box of condoms to the checkout clerk and asked where is the fitting room? And, last but not least..... 16. October 30: went into a fitting room, shut the door, waited awhile, then yelled very loudly, 'Hey! There's no toilet paper in here!'

Thanks to all base Members who make this happen!

The deadline for the Periscope will be the 15th of next month. Thanks! RM2(SS)

Our dinner prior to our meeting is usually “pot-luck”. So bring something to contribute to the dinner if you attend. Our ladies, who take really good care of us and support our efforts, as well as their own projects, organize a great meal for all. There is always plenty for seconds! The dinner is one of our main fund raisers. A $7.00 donation is suggested for each person dining. From that donation, $1.00 goes to the USSVI Scholarship Fund. $1.00 goes to the Ft Mill VFW Post, (they charge us no rent) $2.50 goes to base treasury and $2.50 goes to the Ladies Subvette’s treasury. So, all in all, the money is put to good use supporting the activities of the base as well as the VFW Post.

Again, if you are going to attend the meal, please bring something and please contribute to our causes. Thank-you! If you don’t attend the meal and you are coming to the meeting anyway, please participate in the 3 way drawing at the meeting. This is another fund raiser for the base. 1/3 goes to the VFW post, 1/3 to the base and 1/3 to the winner! $5.00 buys 6 tickets! Thank-you! See you there!

Heavenly Father: we pray to you for those on the perilous ocean that you will embrace them with your mighty protection and grant them success in all their rightful undertakings. Grant them in all hours of need to see that they have a God who remembers them, and grant them grace in the hour of danger to commit their souls into your hands. 0 Lord Jesus Christ, who can rebuke the storm and bring it to silence, and lay the roaring waves to rest, show them who call to you out of the deep that you hear their prayer and will save them.
