PROGRAM INTRODUCTION The Disciplinary Alternative Education Program (DAEP) is a program require by the State of Texas, Chapter 37, of the Texas Education Code (TEC). The program focuses on students whose behavior is inappropriate for regular classroom setting. The program is designed to help students modify their behavior and eventually be placed back into regular classroom. MISSION The Dripping Springs ISD Disciplinary Alternative Education Program (DAEP) is designed with the belief that all students have the capacity to be productive members of society. We are committed to Creating an environment for positive change that allows for exploration of and growth toward individual potential. Through parent and community involvement, the staff will provide a climate that is conducive to the development of self-esteem, academic achievement, vocational awareness and appropriate leisure time activities. PURPOSE While students are sent to the DAEP for disciplinary reasons, it is not the job of the faculty to punish them. Their punishment is being separated from their home campus and losing the opportunity to participate in or attend school activities. The job of the faculty is to assist students academically and socially by helping them with their academic assignments; finding and helping fill gaps in their bank of basic academic skills; and by positively enabling them to reflect on the choices they made that brought them to the program. The goal is for each student to return to their home campus completely caught up on their work, more capable in academic rigor, and empowered with a plan to avoid the behaviors that brought them here.

PROGRAM OVERVIEW The campus principal determines placement into the DAEP. A teacher may initiate placement under the guidelines outlined in Chapter 37.002 of the Texas Education Code (see DSISD Student code of Conduct). Students placed in the DAEP will be required to follow an intensive, structured daily program in which they may accumulate up to 10 points per day. The points are recorded on a Success Documentation Form and are only awarded when the student successfully exhibits appropriate behaviors listed on the Success Documentation Form. The Success Documentation Form are used to track the success of each child. The child’s parent is required to sign the Success Documentation Form each day and it must be returned the next school day. The number of points required (i.e. length of stay) will be determined by the campus principal or designee, with input from the campus Placement Review Committee or the ARD Committee as appropriate. The child will complete the DAEP placement when he/she earns the total number of required points assigned at the time of placement. Students shall be assigned to the DAEP for a minimum of 100 points (10 days). Students are generally assigned for 100 points (10 days), 200 points (20 days), or 300 points (30 days), based on the nature of the offense. Some very serious offenses require a student to be assigned to a long-term placement in the DAEP (i.e. a semester or year). The conditions for the return of these students to the home campus are determined on an individual basis by the campus administrator based on the requirements of the Student Code of Conduct. There is no limit to the number of days a student may be assigned to the DAEP. Students in the DAEP will progress through three levels with increasing responsibility and privileges as they accumulate points. A transition plan systematically returning the child to his/her home campus programming may begin when the student is in the third level (Green Level) of the program. The campus Placement Review Committee will decide appropriate placement if the classroom teacher refuses to take the student back (Sec. 37.003 TEC). DAEP PLACEMENT PROCEDURES 1. A student may be placed in the DAEP after any serious infraction of the School’s Code of Conduct (see DSISD Student Code of Conduct and/or Sec. 37.006 TEC). 2. Within three days of the offense, a hearing will be held with the student, parent/s, and the appropriate administrator designated by the campus principal (Sec. 37.009 TEC). The student and the parents will be notified of the reasons for the removal, an explanation of the basis for the removal, and the provided the opportunity to respond to the reasons for the removal. The student may not be returned to the regular classroom pending the conference. 3. By the conclusion of the conference, whether of not each requested person is in attendance after valid attempts to require their attendance, the administrator will determine if the placement in the DAEP is appropriate and if so, the number of points required to complete the length of stay based on the severity of the offense in accordance with the DSISD Student Code of Conduct.

4. The student and parent/s shall be provided the DAEP Intake Packet and shall complete the required documents. A copy of the DAEP Intake Packet will be provided to the parent/s and the original will be provided to the DAEP Coordinator. In the event of an emergency, the administrator may place a student directly into the DAEP (Sec. 37.009 TEC). 5. Parent/s will be afforded the opportunity to appeal through the campus principal. The student may not be returned to the regular classroom pending the appeal (Sec. 37.006, i TEC) 6. The student will begin his/her placement in the DAEP on the earliest possible date as determined by the administrator. ATTENDANCE Students will comply with the DSISD attendance policy. When a student is absent, the student’s parent must contact the campus attendance office on the day of the absence and provide acceptable documentation for the absence prior to or upon the student’s return. Students will not earn points on days they are not in attendance. Any unexcused absence or tardy may result in the loss of all accumulated points. A truancy shall result in the loss of all accumulated points. The DAEP will be in operation on the same schedule as the high school. Refer to the school calendar for specific dates of operation. TRANSPORTATION Transportation for a child assigned to the DAEP shall be the responsibility of the parent/s of the child. Parents who is unable to provide transportation to the DAEP may submit a request in writing to the campus principal or designee to evaluate the transportation need of the child. The campus principal or designee will have the final word on whether or not a student may ride the bus based on the nature of the offense resulting in the DAEP placement. A child granted permission to ride the bus will lose the privilege if any rule violation occurs. Children granted permission to ride the bus while in the DAEP must sit at the front of the bus. High school students assigned to the DAEP who have a parking permit may submit a request for a special privilege to drive and park in the designated DAEP parking area (see Special Earned Privileges) CURRICULUM Each of the classroom teachers from the student’s home campus will provide assignments based on the curriculum for their subject area. The assignments will be graded by the teacher submitting the assignment. Additional assignments may be generated by the home campus administrators or the DAEP staff. The students interim and/or term grade/s while assigned to the DAEP will be determined by the student’s home campus classroom teachers. The assigned grade must reflect the mastery level of the curriculum in the course. The district shall administer the required pre- and post-assessments for students assigned to DAEP for a period of 90 days or longer in accordance with established district administrative procedures for administering other diagnostic or benchmark assessments.

Coursework Notice The parent or guardian of a student placed in DAEP shall be given written notice of the student’s opportunity to complete coursework required for graduation, at no cost to the student. The notice shall include information regarding all methods available for completing the coursework. THE DAEP LEVEL SYSTEM There are three levels of progression within the DAEP. Each level is distinguished by color. Points accumulated each day determine advancement to the next level. The number of points needed to advance will be determined by the DAEP Coordinator. All entering students will begin on the Red Level. When a student successfully progresses through all behavior development levels and has earned the total number of points assigned by the administrator, the student will be eligible to return to their home campus. • RED LEVEL: This is a “RESTRICTED PRIVILEGE” level where the students is closely observed and not allowed any special privileges. • YELLOW LEVEL: This is an “EXPERIMENTAL” level where the student will be observed and allowed to experience some classroom privileges. The student will advance to the Yellow Level when they have reached one-third (1/3) of the total points required for dismissal. • GREEN LEVEL: This is a “PREPARATORY” level where new behaviors are learned and practiced consistently to ensure a successful transition back to the home school. The student will advance to the Green Level when they have reached two-thirds (2/3) of the total points for dismissal. Students on the Yellow and Green Levels must receive a daily minimum of 8 points to stay on those levels. If a student receives lower than 8 points, the student will be placed on the Red Level for a day and not allowed any special privileges. The following may result in the student being automatically dropped a level: • Any violations of the DAEP Expectations • Any violation of the DSISD Student Code of Conduct • Profanity or casual talk about sex, drugs, or alcohol. • Fighting or talking about fighting. • Any gang representation. Dropping a level will result in the loss of points, which will result in a longer stay in the DAEP. EXPULSION FROM THE DAEP A student who violates the DSISD Student Code of Conduct while placed in the DAEP by committing a mandatory DAEP placement offense shall be subject to expulsion from DSISD. Students committing a discretionary DAEP placement offense while placed in the DAEP may be subject to expulsion.

TRANSITIONING OUT OF THE DAEP A student may begin transitioning back to his/her home campus when the student has achieved the necessary number of points needed for the privilege of transitioning. A transition plan will be developed by the DAEP Coordinator with input from the student’s teachers, campus administrators, and the student. The transition plan will be unique to the student based on the needs of the student, the nature of the original offense, and the location of the home campus relative to the DAEP campus. Continuation of the transition plan will be based on feedback from the classroom teachers serving the student and the campus administrators. Your child is being placed in the Dripping Springs Independent School District’s Disciplinary Alternative Education Program for a violation of the DSISD Student Code of Conduct. The anticipated duration of the stay in the DAEP is school days based on the nature of the offense as determined by the designated administrator. Your child will be returned to the regular classroom once he/she earns points equal to 10 times the number of days assigned (up to 10 points can be accumulated each day). The Disciplinary Alternative Education Program operates on a level and point system. The actual number of days a student must serve in the DAEP is based on the total points earned. Should your child fail to earn points during the days assigned, the designated administrator may assign additional days as an additional disciplinary consequence. The additional days will be documented as an additional disciplinary referral by the administrator you and your child will be notified by the administrator or the DAEP Coordinator. The DAEP staff will administer required pre- and post-assessments for students assigned to DAEP for a period of 90 days or longer in accordance with established district administrative procedures for administering other diagnostic or benchmark assessments. Notification of Parental Rights If placement in a DAEP is to extend beyond 60 days or the end of the next grading period, whichever is earlier, the student’s parent or guardian is entitled to notice of and an opportunity to participate in a proceeding before the Board or designee. Such requests are delivered to the campus principal in writing. Any decision of the Board or designee concerning placement beyond 60 days or the end of the next grading period is final and cannot be appealed. A student placed in a DAEP shall be provided a review of the student’s status, including a review of the student’s academic status, by the Board’s designee at intervals not to exceed 120 days. In the case of a high school student, the Board’s designee, with the student’s parent or guardian, shall review the student’s progress toward meeting high school graduation requirements and shall establish a specific graduation plan for the student. This requirement does not, however, obligate the District to provide in the DAEP a course, except as required by Education Code 37.008(l). At the review, the student or the student’s parent or guardian must be given the opportunity to present arguments for the student’s return to the regular classroom or campus. The student may not be returned to the classroom of the teacher that removed the student without that teacher’s consent. The teacher cannot be coerced to consent. Education Code 37.009(e) A student placed in a DAEP shall be provided an opportunity to complete coursework required for graduation, at no cost to the student. The campus administrator will provide information regarding all methods available for completing the coursework for graduation and the DSISD methods available for completing the coursework at no cost to the student.
