ACS Hi everyone, Let me introduce myself as a Mathematics teacher. My name is Cipto. I graduated from Institut Teknologi Bandung majoring in Mathematics. I have been teaching Mathematics for secondary students for some years. Now at ACS Jakarta, I am teaching Grade 10 IGCSE Additional Mathematics. I look forward to working with all of you.

NEW SECONDARY TEACHERS Greetings of peace! I am Ms. Evelyn S. I. Henson from the Philippines. I am a graduate with Bachelor in Secondary Education Major in History with a Master’s Degree in History. In the past twenty years, I have gained valuable teaching experiences in the primary level, secondary level, and tertiary level in the Philippines and in Indonesia. These teaching experiences were further enriched in the last two years when I served as a full-time History Instructor in the University of Santo Tomas, Manila. For this academic year, I will be teaching History in the lowersecondary level and I will also be handling CAS. I look forward to meeting my students and colleagues. It is truly a blessing to be a facilitator of learning – helping learners to help themselves. I hope that my role as a teacher would lead to producing self-propelled students who have achieved their fullest potential. May we have a fruitful year marked with excellence! My name is Pu Xiuhua, Gladys. I was born in Hebei province, China. I graduated from Hebei Normal University. My major is Chinese language and literature education. With more than 10 years’ experience as a Chinese teacher, I am confident in my classroom management, curriculum development and student motivation skills. The more I teach, the more I feel that it is true - “there are no bad students.” When you are complaining to our students why is it that they wouldn’t be good, you should calm down and reflect on yourself first. This is my motto which is always reminding me to be a better teacher. It’s my honor to be a Mandarin teacher in ACS Jakarta. It’s my pleasure to teach your child in this academic year. This will be my fourth year in Jakarta and first at ACS. Since coming to Southeast Asia, I have spent my holidays trekking the mountain villages of Papua, feeding critically endangered orangutans in Kalimantan, volunteering to support mistreated elephants in Chiang Mai, and embarking on the cultural event of a lifetime through Tibet. I have come to learn that many of the world’s most glaring problems: overpopulation; religious intolerance; access to clean water, food, or healthcare; and smog filled skies are much more tangible than any media conglomerate can portray, and the solutions a lot more complex than donating from afar. I have asked myself, if I don’t support my beliefs with action, how can I expect others to? This question thrust me into teaching; I knew I wanted to make a difference in the world. It is why I emphasize self-reflection in the pursuit of defining what my students value, because knowing why you do something is much more crucial than what or how you do it. I do not teach content per se, but a holistic learning process because while content may be forgotten, knowing how to reason and what you value lasts forever. I teach with the intention of helping my students reach self-actualization, which in my opinion means questioning assumptions to find what you care about and acting on it. I believe this is how I must teach, not for me, but for the benefit of all. The world’s problems, our problems, will not solve themselves, only action will. Forming an opinion and supporting those beliefs with action to make a positive change in the world are the values I wish to instill in my students, because “unless someone like you cares a whole awful lot, nothing is going to get better.”

My name is Carmen Choong, and I am happy to join the ACS family as a Chemistry teacher in ACS Jakarta for the upcoming academic year! I have been a teacher for 6 years. This is my first year teaching in Jakarta. Prior to coming here, I have taught Chemistry as well as Mathematics in a secondary school in Singapore. I have taught in many different grades from grade 7 to grade 10, and I have been a homeroom teacher all these years in teaching. I have also taken charge of the CCAs Fencing and National Cadet Corp (Land) previously in Singapore. I earned my Bachelor of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering degree from Nanyang Technological University, where I also completed a teacher training program in the National Institute of Education, Singapore. Being a globetrotter, I guess I am coping well to life in Jakarta for now at least. Traveling for me is always fun because I get to experience something new and meet people that opens my perspective on life. I believe this is part of character building as from each experience there’s always a lesson to be learned. I hope to share my experiences with my students, inspiring them to keep their minds open. To explore, dream and discover. I hope for a productive, challenging and encouraging year ahead with my students, and I look forward to a fulfilling time in ACS Jakarta! Dr Chua Kok Seng obtained his Doctorate in Education from The University of Western Australia in 2008. He has taught in various mainstream schools in Singapore, ranging from secondary schools to junior colleges for about 20 years. He also has a teaching stint in Shanghai-Singapore International School in Shanghai, China in Theory of Knowledge and Business Management (International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme) where he was also appointed as a Senior School Teacher Counsellor (University Guidance). Moreover, he was a Senior Manager (Academic Affairs) in Management Development Institute of Singapore, a private tertiary institution in Singapore. He is a father of 2 daughters who are studying in NUS and CHIJ, Toa Payoh. His wife is also a teacher in St Andrews Junior College. He served God as a song leader in Zion Bible Presbyterian Church in Singapore. Dr Chua also served as the Secretary of the Punggol South Citizens Consultative Committee, Chairman of the Inter-Racial and Religious Confidence Circle and the Chief Editor of the Punggol South Newsletter as well as Editor, Pasir Ris Punggol Our Harmony Cookbook. He also received the 20-year Long Service Award. Dr Chua has presented a number of parenting and assembly talks in various schools in Singapore in his capacity as a Business Consultant and Director of a Consultancy firm, Global Educational (Asia) Pte Ltd before his teaching stint in Shanghai, China.
