I am currently on my Easter Holiday. I will return next week. Happy Easter!

Seriously Do you believe in the Resurrection of Our Lord from the dead?? This is a good question to ask, at least so St. Paul says, because if the answer is “no,” then “our faith is in vain” (1 Cor 15:14-19). But sometimes it is hard to know what the “resurrection” is. Couldn’t it even be just bringing Jesus back to life so he could go on as before, just a limited ordinary life, as Kazantzakis and Dan Brown have portrayed it? Here is a metaphor to suggest a better answer. There is a spiritual soil that everything else sprouts from. In his death, Jesus plunged deep down into this soil. He had stumbled, fallen, and had lost the very thing we think is irreplaceable and to be guarded beyond all else: life. But think about it. Isn’t life just another garden plant, sprouting from some rich loam, one that we hardly notice. Yes? Well, that spiritual soil is called love: vast and quiet love. “Doubting Thomas” from Sunday’s Gospel was broken-hearted because he thought that such love had died. He warded off his grief by simple denial. “Unless I see the mark of the nails in his hands and put my finger into the nailmarks and put my hand into his side, I will not believe”! And in the gospel of Luke it was the women, not the men, who had seen the empty tomb and the angels, and they took it seriously. But “ … their words seemed an idle tale, and [the disciples] did not believe” (Lk 24:11). In Matthew, Jesus came first to the women, who told the men where he would meet them. They went and “worshipped him, but they doubted” (Mt 28:17). In Mark, Jesus appeared first to Mary Magdalene, but when she went to the apostles, you guessed it, they rejected her testimony (Mk 16:9). Nor did they listen to the men who had met Jesus walking to Emmaus (Mk 16:12-13). Hard to miss the fact that women usually believed and men usually did not. The women dared to trust what they saw. Dan Brown’s Da Vinci Code goes several steps further. For him, males have purposely repressed the essence of Christianity. His real truth, guarded through centuries, is that Mary Magdalene was Jesus’ secret wife! Moreover, a flesh and blood descendent from Jesus is alive today (a woman, living outside our “me too” times, and in fear for her life). Obviously if the gospels are just huge cover-ups, then the resurrection would be just one more spin of the glittering wheel of deception. But what about the vast and quiet love we spoke about above? Jesus’ life, death and resurrection aimed us toward the source of all life, the source of the universe, of worlds, of women and men, of marriage and offspring, and taking on the trials of others. Jesus is the river of love that God had poured into the world, now flowing back into the ocean of the Trinity and taking us along, whichever of us chooses to believe. So, can you live by this resurrection? If you can, then you can believe that love is the foundation of life. Put your finger here and see my hands, and bring your hand and put it into my side, and do not be unbelieving, but believe (Gospel).

Al momento estoy en mi descanso de Pascua. Regresare la próxima semana. ¡Feliz Pascua!

Un domingo “en albis” Según nuestras tradiciones, hoy es el último día en que los recién bautizados se vestían de ropas blancas, todavía perfumados con los aceites sagrados y de pie ante los cristianos que los habían recibido en la comunidad el Sábado Santo. Esa comunidad que los recibió se define en la primera lectura, tomada hoy de los Hechos de los Apóstoles. Esta descripción ha sido un objeto de veneración para los que guardan la prioridad del amor de Cristo y un escándalo para los que fingen la fe cristiana sólo para abrazar el poder. ¿Qué testimonio damos nosotros a la vida del Resucitado? ¿Está presente en los detalles de la vida diaria, nuestro único culto? La segunda lectura, tomada de la primera carta de Juan, nos dice que nuestro amor a Dios tiene sentido sólo al ser relacionado con el amor expresado al prójimo. El Evangelio según Juan nos presenta la aparición de Jesús a los discípulos, dándoles su misión como fuente de la reconciliación con Dios. El aparece, no sólo para el bien de Tomás y ellos. El viene también para nosotros que no estamos seguros si sus heridas son signos de amor o de vindicación. Cristo nos muestra sus heridas para sanarnos y darnos la habilidad de sanar a otros. El Triduo de la Semana Santa, es el retiro espiritual verdadero de la comunidad cristiana de fe. El Jueves, Viernes y Sábado Santos son para nosotros un solo tiempo de esperanza. El domingo sólo existe para los que no han podido participar en el Triduo. Durante estos años ha crecido mucho el grupo que se reúne en el Triduo. Sin embargo, con todo lo que se celebra el Sábado Santo, hay mucha más gente que participa el Domingo de Resurrección que en la Vigilia del sábado. No aparecen ni los ministros, los futuros compañeros de los que van a recibir las aguas bautismales, los oleos de confirmación y el pan eucarístico. En esta noche de luz simbólica, muchos brillan por su ausencia. Parece que la comunidad entera puede estar presente el viernes para adorar a Cristo en el símbolo de la cruz y después estar ausente para la celebración de la Resurrección. Evidentemente, muchos creemos que la cruz es el signo de nuestro compromiso y que nuestra oración se termina en el sepulcro del viernes. Esta opinión tiene algún apoyo histórico porque, durante el primer siglo, la Iglesia celebraba el nacimiento, la muerte y la resurrección de Jesús, todo en la misma noche del Viernes Santo. Sin embargo, en la liturgia moderna, la cruz no simboliza nuestro compromiso, sino el amor de Dios quien da Su Vida (Su Hijo) por nosotros, llamándonos así a responder con un amor incondicional para nuestro prójimo. La clave de nuestra reconciliación se encuentra sólo en la Eucaristía de la Vigilia del Sábado, cuando expresamos nuestra alegría por la presencia del Resucitado, y cantamos al Dios que da vida a los nuevos cristianos y quien renueva la nuestra. Parece poca gente la que se reúne para la Vigilia del Sábado Santo. Es posible que muchos del barrio no entiendan su importancia, pero, por lo menos, nosotros que participamos en los ministerios parroquiales debemos comprenderla. Si queremos servir a los demás y esta fiesta es la liturgia más importante de nuestra solidaridad espiritual, ¿por qué no la compartimos todos? ¿ No somos nosotros los que pretendemos ser la comunidad que existe para servir a los demás? Por lo menos, así lo declaramos. ¿Entendemos el significado de las lecturas de hoy que enseñan sobre la solidaridad de los primeros cristianos? ¿Comprendemos cómo esas primeras comunidades aprovecharon la Vigilia para celebrar su unión con el Señor Resucitado? Claro que es difícil compartir la liturgia trilingüe de la Vigilia. Pero es una de las pocas ocasiones cuando esto sea necesario por motivo de las culturas distintas que comparten los sacramentos de iniciación cristiana. Esta celebración no es la posesión de ningún grupo étnico, sino una tarea para toda la comunidad. Todos tenemos algo que ver con esta celebración de la comunidad y de sus sacramentos. No nos reunimos en la Vigilia por motivo de familia y sangre, sino por una fe y el Espíritu común regalado por Dios. ¿No sería maravilloso si, por la cantidad de personas presentes, tuvieramos que pelear los asientos en la Vigilia como hacemos en otros tiempos para conseguir cenizas y palmas? ¿Comprendemos actualmente el mensaje que nos trae la Resurrección del Señor? ¿O es posible que esta proclamación de la Resurrección no sea para nosotros, sino para otros? CROCHET AND KNITTING MINISTRY A new St. Peter’s women’s ministry of crocheting and knitting for others will meet on the third Tuesday of every month from 1PM—3PM. We meet in the Upper Room of the St. Andrew’s Center. You can learn to crochet or knit (the yarn and supplies will be provided), you can do your own thing, or you can sit and chat. There is no fee. St. Peter the Apostle Catholic School students earned many awards at the 2018 Greater San Diego Science and Engineering Fair! All students completed strong projects, but four projects were selected and accepted to compete at the higher level of the GSDSEF in Balboa Park. •

Annabella Ross (Grade 7) won 4th place for her Medical and Health Science project, which tested whether one gender was superior in coordination.

Annabella Ross also won the art contest for designing the shirt illustration for the entire event!

•

Mateo Torres (Grade 8) won 4th place for his Plant Science project that focused on algae growth.

•

Quinn Hayek (Grade 7) earned a 3rd place ribbon for his Behavioral and Social Science project, testing different music genres effects on memory.

Parker Taitano (Grade 7) earned 3rd place for his Plant Science project, comparing traditional soil growing to the new agricultural process of hydroponics.
