Season’s GreetingsPosted on: December 18, 2012 Dear ESERA members, On behalf of the whole ESERA executive board and with this last issue of the 2012 ESERA e-News, we wish you a Merry Christmas and all the best for the upcoming new year. Let’s use our scientific network to continue improving the quality and intensity of science education research in Europe and

worldwide, and to support the development of our doctoral students and post-doctoral scientists. 2012 again was a special year and full of new developments. Here is a short summary. The executive board can proudly report that it held two meetings in 2012 – one in Heidelberg and one in Bad Honnef. At these meetings we discussed future plans and activities to fulfill the ESERA policy. The electronic proceedings of the ESERA 2011 Conference have been published on the ESERA website, a contract with Springer has been signed for a new ESERA book series: Contributions from Science Education Research. Three Special Interest Groups (SIGs) have started their work. ESERA held a special symposium at NARST 2012. During this conference in Indianapolis three executive board members met with NARST representatives. We had contacts with representatives of the European Commission and a meeting in Brussels with Policy Officers for Science Education within DG Research & Innovation. ESERA was represented at the INTEL Educator Academy in Bratislava (23-26 September 2012) where we were able to discuss with representatives from the EU RoundTable of Industrialists, SchoolNet and Project INGENIUS the importance of researcher involvement in science education innovation projects. The ESERA summer school 2012 took place in Bad Honnef, Germany, and was a great success. All PhD students presenting at this summer school have been invited to participate in a special poster symposium at ESERA 2013. ESERA sponsored four ESERA Travel Awards in 2012 for doctoral students and post-doctoral researchers. The call for travel awards 2013 has been published, with a deadline for applications of 1st January 2013. With an enormous amount of energy, the Cyprus team moved the old ESERA website and set up a new and interactive one with lots of useful features in order to support communication within the organization. Finally, the call for the ESERA 2013 conference has been published and the application and review process will now be organized via our new website. As the end of 2012 approaches, let’s thank all members of ESERA who have been active and supportive in our organization - as reviewers and members of commissions, as organizers of meetings and conferences, and as members of the executive board. We are grateful for an active membership and lots of constructive support throughout the year. Have a good and healthy start into 2013. Sincerely, Manuela Welzel-Breuer and Costas Constantinou

ESERA Executive NominationsPosted on: December 18, 2012 At the ESERA Conference 2013 the following members of the ESERA Executive will stand down: Koos Kortland (Treasurer) and Fatih Tasar (responsible for Special Interest Groups). The nomination procedure is now open. Candidates for the ESERA Executive are asked to provide up to 250 words in support of their candidature and a photograph. Please note that all nominations must be supported by a proposer and a seconder who are both personal members of the Association and who are nationals of different European countries. Nominations should be sent to the ESERA Secretary Costas Constantinou: [email protected]. Deadline for nominations: May 15, 2013. After that date, the nominations will be displayed on the ESERA website, and ESERA members will be invited to elect the new Executive through a secure electronic voting system between June 15 and July 15, 2013. At the first meeting of the new Executive Board, which will be held immediately after the ESERA 2013 Conference, (a) the treasurer will take responsibility for the membership and financial management and (b) the other newly elected member will also participate fully in the active decision making of the Executive Board and will take over the portfolio on Special Interest Groups. This involves liaising with SIG Co-ordinators, promoting the development of new SIGs and also presenting to the Board any new SIG proposals.

ESERA Summer School 2014 to be held in Çanakkale TurkeyPosted on: December 18, 2012 The ESERA board has accepted a proposal from Fatih Taşar at Gazi Üniversitesi and Betül Timur from Çanakkale Onsekiz Mart Üniversitesi (COMU) to host the 2014 ESERA Summer School at the COMU Dardanos Campus in Turkey. COMU is located in Çanakkale, which is a small coastal town about 310 km from Istanbul by bus or plane. Established in 1992, COMU is one of the leading universities in Turkey with nearly 33,000 students and qualified academic and administrative staff. Both Fatih and Betül have personal experience with ESERA Summer Schools and will maintain these traditions at a reasonable cost to participants. The Summer School dates will be announced later.

ESERA Bi-Annual Conference to be held in 2015 in Helsinki FinlandPosted on: December 18, 2012 The ESERA Board has accepted a proposal from Jarkko Lampiselkä and Jari Lavonen from the University of Helsinki in Finland to hold the ESERA 2015 International Conference in Helsinki from 31.8 – 4.9.2015. All intended conference venues will be located within 1.5 kilometres from the city centre and easily accessible by public transportation. The planning committee, mindful of the costs of living in Helsinki, will offer various options for conference participants so that they can make selections which match their financial resources. Similarly, they are securing a variety of accommodations at a wide-range of prices to meet different participant preferences.

Decisions for ESERA at NARST Conference 2013Posted on: December 18, 2012 Again, for the 2013 NARST conference taking place from April 6 to April 9, 2013 in Puerto Rico, ESERA was invited to present European science education research in a specific symposium session. After receiving a variety of applications, the executive board decided that ESERA would be represented with the IRIS project on “Students’ choices of, and transition into, STEM programmes in higher education”. The IRIS project connects ESERA members from Italy, Norway, Slovenia, UK and Denmark.

Strand Chairpersons will propose presenters who will be invited to submit chapters. Submissions of chapters for this book will be blind reviewed by two independent experts and also the Book Editors.

Cyprus We hope the conference will be an enjoyable experience for all participants. Cyprus is a beautiful Mediterranean island in the south-east cornerstone of Europe. The University of Cyprus was established in 1989 and strives to assert itself as an institution of scholarship and creativity in eastern Mediterranean. Nicosia, the host city, deserves a visit for its mediaeval walls, its narrow streets and its many tavernas where you can find delicious Cypriot food and wine. It is a rather small city of 200000 people with warm summer days but cool evenings, excellent services, infrastructure and organization. The city is 40 minutes away from some of the best beaches in the world and only about an hour away from some of the oldest surviving wall and floor mosaics in the world.
