“Scouting rises within you and inspires you to put forth your best” - Juliette Gordon Low

Leadership, the skills they need to succeed, exploration of new technology, appreciation for the outdoors, jaw-dropping science, and unforgettable experiences – it’s in our DNA. Our founder, Juliette Gordon Low, believed in the importance of each of these when she started Girl Scouting in Georgia. Today, we honor her legacy by continuing to carry out programs that introduce girls to STEM, the Outdoors, Life Skills, Leadership, and incredible Experiences.

On the following pages, you will find all the tools and information you need to have a great year in Girl Scouting: A list of all currently scheduled programs by age level Our Girl Scouts Heart of the Hudson Program Calendar for the 2016-2017 year highlighting all programs, their times, and locations, and featuring pictures of girls from throughout the council Program descriptions for each program that will be offered this year Most of our programs already have a location secured, and you will find it listed alongside the program in the calendar. Offices are listed by their hometown (Kingston, Middletown, New City, Pleasantville, and Poughkeepsie). For programs that do not have a confirmed location, we will list them by county (for example, Ulster or Westchester). Please make note of the following abbreviations that may be used throughout: CAB Camp Addisone Boyce

If you wish to speak with someone in regards to registration or if you have additional questions about programs, please connect with our customer care team at 855.232.GSHH (4744) or [email protected]

Early registration for program helps ensure programs will not be closed or cancelled. Our programs are very popular and fill quickly, and we may not be able to offer additional sessions. All programs, including updates, are listed online at www.girlscoutshh.org/activities.

Please remember to register yourselves and all attending adults. Even though there is usually no charge for adults to attend girl programs, adults do need to be counted in program planning – especially for programs where there is limited space. Also, registered adults will receive confirmation and correspondence as necessary for the program.

We know life offers you many choices, and what to do with your girls as you start a year of Girl Scouting is a conversation every parent and Troop Leader will have this fall. Council Programs are an excellent choice for those looking for fun, stress-free options that help girls grow into confident leaders, innovators, and problem solvers.

This past year, current Girl Scouts were asked to list their top 3 reasons for staying in Girl Scouts, and the results were:   

To have fun To spend time with their friends To try or learn new things

Council programs allow girls to have fun and spend time with friends in a safe, friendly, girl-centric environment dedicated to fostering personal growth, leadership, and teambuilding. Council programming encourages girls to challenge themselves in a space where they are free to fail, learn at their own pace, and accept challenges by choice. They are encouraged to question, experiment, and learn by doing.

This past year, current volunteers listed the number one resounding reason for choosing Girl Scouts was to help girls reach their full potential. Covering topics from archery to winter survival, from aerospace engineering to cooking, and from canoeing to environmental conservation, council programs allow girls to grow and thrive as they discover themselves, their passions, and their talents.

        

Council Programs are designed and led by people you know and trust Stress-free and planning-free for parents and Troop Leaders Something for everyone – girls can register as part of a troop or as an individual and find something that interests them We meet GSUSA safety guidelines and requirements 95% of programs are held on council properties which makes them safe and easy to find Reasonable pricing Key partnerships with organizations, community leaders, and vendors Meet other girls from around the council Programs are developed based on girl interest surveys and interviews

DO you want to make a change in your personal life or maybe on a larger community scale? Discover the issues that are important to you and your fellow young women, from job discrimination to stereotypes in advertising culture. Discuss personal values and the roles of women around the world. Together we’ll work on conflict resolution and teambuilding skills. Do the words “demanding obstacles” make your heart skip a beat with excitement? Then you my friend are ready for the challenge of the Cadette Dirt Run and Crawl Obstacle Race at Rock Hill Camp. While having a blast with your troop or forming new friendships on your own, you will be running, crawling, swinging and climbing your way to a medal you will be proud to show all your friends and family. Don’t miss this exciting event full of mud and fun everyone can enjoy in their own way. Whether you just want to challenge yourself to get through the course or you want to “Go for It” and compete for one of the best performances overall; that will be up to you. Participation note: This event is not for everyone; participants must be in good physical condition and able to negotiate the course and obstacles without assistance. Everyone will be running on loose uneven terrain through grassy fields or dirt paths when traveling from one obstacle or challenge to another. Please realize that bumps, cuts and scratches are hard to avoid when participating in a physically challenging outdoor obstacle course event even though all safety precautions will be made. Just running down a grassy hill can easily cause a slip, twist or cut, add the obstacles and we have a real challenge.

Cadette Program Aide Training Overnight Age Level: 7th and 8th Grade Cadettes Date: 9/22/17 – 9/23/17 Cost: $30.00 Location: Rock Hill Camp Cadette Program Aide Leadership Experience; come start your year with something exciting and fun: As a Cadette, you’re growing into a whole new Girl Scout. That’s an incredible adventure in itself- a world of new people to meet, exciting activities to choose, and choices to make that can change you and the world. Along the way, you’ll become even more of a leader and act as a trailblazer for others. Why not start your new leadership experience with a little fun and adventure? We have designed the program as a Camp Cabin Overnight so we will have lots of time to learn how to work with children, while gaining a deeper understanding of the outdoors and designing fun outdoor crafts and adventures you can assist with for younger Girl Scouts. The best is, as an overnight we will have extra time to have a little fun ourselves as we take a leisurely evening boating voyage, create nature crafts and enjoy cooking special treats over a campfire. So come alone, grab a friend or bring your whole troop and join us for a leadership adventure that will be fun every step of the way. During our time together we will work on the Cadette Core Program Aide requirements. We will study child development, age characteristics, attention spans, motor skills and appropriate activities for younger Girl Scouts. You will still need experience working directly with younger Girl Scouts to finish your Program Aide Award therefore as a GSHH Program Aide candidate you will automatically have the opportunity to work with Daisies and Brownies at the council level. You will be able to volunteer for council events before any other volunteers are permitted to sign up. If you would rather finish your Program Aide requirements working with younger Girl Scouts in your community you are welcome to arrange that too. Note: This program is for 7th and 8th grade Cadettes who have finished their Cadette L.I.A. award. You must complete you Cadette LIA Award before completing your Program Aide Award. We suggest all 6th grade Cadettes work on earning their L.I.A. Award and then plan on participating in the Program Aide Overnight in 7 th or 8th Grade.
