Jun 12 - Day 2 – Edinburgh, Scotland You arrive into Edinburgh in the afternoon so there is time to relax before we enjoy a welcome dinner together in Edinburgh. The area around Edinburgh has been occupied for thousands of years, but the settlement became a town and the capital city of Scotland in the 14th century. Our journey of Edinburgh, one of the oldest cities and settlements in the British Isles, has all the right magic and atmosphere to start a grand Journey across Scotland, Wales and England. Tonight, enjoy dinner with old friends and new and a refreshing night’s sleep before we continue touring this fascinating city tomorrow. (D) At its heart, the Principal Edinburgh occupies five Georgian townhouses built in 1775. The warmth of the hotel is inspired by 19th-century Scottish landscape painters. The lobby’s Printing Press Bar is a nod to Edinburgh’s notable literary heritage.

Jun 13 - Day 3 – Edinburgh, Scotland We explore Edinburgh today. Magnificent architecture shifts from the lofty buildings of its medieval Old Town that line the Royal Mile to the graceful houses of the Georgian New Town. We start the day out with an overview of Edinburgh by coach but then set out on foot with our top local guide as we explore the Secrets of the Royal Mile. We visit the places where history was made, the narrow lanes (Wynds) and courtyards of the homes of Edinburgh’s Old Town. We learn the true stories of the capital’s past from crime and culture to everyday life over the centuries. The characters, Mary Queen of Scots, David Hume, Adam Smith and Robert Burns to name a few. Then we skip the line at Edinburgh Castle to explore this jewel that crowns the city. Enjoy some independent exploration of Edinburgh for the balance of the afternoon before we come together in the evening to experience one of the longest-running cultural shows at the Round Stables. Bagpipes, fiddles, music and dance all in Scottish spirit. (B,D)

The Kingsmill Hotel, a top 10 hotel in the Inverness Region, is set up against the rolling green links of the Inverness Golf Club. With a rich and diverse history dating back to the 18th century, it’s just a 15minute walk to the center of town.

Jun 14 – Day 4 – Inverness, the Highland Capital We depart Edinburgh today and journey north into the highlands of Scotland. When you think Northern Scotland, you see the rolling hills from movies like “Braveheart” and of course ponder the possibility of its most famous resident “Nessy” in the depths of Loch Ness. Our first stop is the town of Pitlochry, and the beautiful Blair Castle. Now erase from your mind the imposing lump of grey stone that you think of when you hear the word castle. Blair Castle’s white glimmering walls is the ancestral home of the Clan Murray. Construction began in 1269 as the seat for the Earls of Atholl. After enjoying this wonderful castle set in the rolling green pastures, we visit a local Scottish Whisky distillery and learn about one of the symbols of Scotland, which is exported around the world. We enjoy Inverness this evening, our first night in the north. (B,D)

Jun 15 - Day 5 – Into the Highlands Step back into prehistoric times today as we discover one of Scotland’s most evocative Bronze Age sites. These remains of an ancient cemetery, built 4,000 years ago, has been a sacred site for millennia. Step into the ruins of an ancient chapel and explore the Balnuaran of Clava and Milton of Clava Cairns.

(B,L)

Racing forward in time, see the site of one of Scotland’s bloodiest battles, the Battle of Culloden, in the Scottish highlands. This site, the final Jacobite battle in 1745, was part of the religious civil war in Britain. Loyalist troops, commanded by William Augustus, Duke of Cumberland, decisively defeated Charles Edward Stuart. After witnessing the beauty of the Scottish highlands, we return to Inverness for the rest of day at leisure or exploration. (B)

June 16 - Day 6 – Loch Ness & Glasgow Today we depart the north of Scotland and turn our gaze south towards Glasgow. On our way, we will pass right by one of the most famous lakes in the world, Loch Ness. It is a combination of speculation and sightings over the last century. Although the first proposed photograph of the famed Loch Ness Monster was in 1933, accounts date back as far as 565 AD. More current reports started in the late 1800s. We stop to enjoy a cruise on this famous lake and to see the ruins of Urquhart Castle (see pic right). The ancient bones of this once grand structure stand guard on the lake’s shore. This castle played a role in Scottish independence in the 14th century. We enjoy an afternoon Tea along the journey to Glasgow as we pass through Fort William, Glencoe and Loch Lomond. We arrive in the port city of Glasgow in the later afternoon. (B,T)

The Hotel Indigo Glasgow is a popular spot and a top-10 hotel in the center of this bustling coastal city. The hotel’s bright colors and vibrant modern interiors dazzle visitors.

Jun 17 – Day 7 – Exploring Glasgow & Lake District This morning we embark on a panoramic overview of the bustling and dynamic port city of Glasgow. We cannot leave the center of Glasgow without two very important visits. The first being Provand’s Lordship house, one of only four buildings surviving from Medieval times. Built in 1471 as part of the hospital in the cathedral precinct, the structure is furnished with interiors and portraiture from 1500-1700. The house also features a beautiful medicinal herb garden. Today’s destination is the popular haunt for Britain's best loved artists and poets. England’s Lake District is a true jewel in the English crown. Lofty peaks, idyllic villages, tranquil lakes and award- winning gardens confirm why the Lake District is often referred to as the “Most beautiful corner of England.” We stay for two nights in Grasmere, a stunning little village in the very heart of the Lake District National Park. (B,D)

Jun 18 – Day 8 – Lake District Countryside Surrounded by lush green countryside, we journey out from our village of Grasmere to witness the oil-painting perfect countryside. We start our exploration with a visit to beloved poet William Wordsworth home, Dove Cottage. He discovered the cottage in 1799 while on a walk with his brother and moved in shortly after. I wander lonely as a cloud, that floats on high o’er vales and hills. When all at once I saw a crowd, a host of golden daffodils. Beside the lake, beneath the trees, Fluttering and dancing in the breeze.– William Wordsworth, 1804 After stepping back in time at Dove Cottage, we travel to visit a local Lake District Farm, a chance for a wonderful lunch and to see local Sheep Dogs in action. The Herdwick sheep in this area take longer to mature resulting in a much smaller animal. After a day in the country, we return for an evening and overnight in the quaint village of Grasmere. (B,L,D)

Set on the cobblestone streets of picturesque Grasmere, the Wordsworth Hotel & Spa is named after the town’s most famous poet. Just a 3-minute walk from the scenic Rothay River, this boutique hotel is truly lovely.

Jun 19 - Day 9 – Lake District to York Departing the beautiful Lake District this morning, we cross the Yorkshire Dales as we journey to the historic city of York. The word dale, like dell, is derived from the Old English word dael. It finds its roots in the Nordic/Germanic word for Valley, and most of the Dales (Valleys) are names after rivers that crisscross this area. On our way today we pass through a region famous for the English cheese Wensleydale, first made by French Cistercian monks from the Roquefort region of France. The monks settles in Fors in the 14th century but later moved to the lower Wensleydale area. The monastery was dissolved in 1540 but local farmers continued to make the cheese right up until WW2. Now the cheese is made by small local dairies and we will stop to visit the Wensleydale Cheese Center as we pass through the area. We arrive in York in the later afternoon. (B)

Jun 20 - Day 10 –York Minster & Northern Wales This morning we visit one of the most important Cathedrals in Europe, York Minster. It is one of the largest Cathedrals of its kind in Europe. One of the reasons churches of this kind are so important is because they are often time capsules of a given city and York Minster is just that. A church has existed on this site since 627 AD, and the current cathedral’s construction began in 1220 AD. Our second visit this morning is to the Bedern Glazier’s studio, where they are restoring stained glass from Minster Cathedral. It can take 400-600 hours of work to restore a single panel of ancient stained glass, so today we see that up close. Enjoy some time to explore the medieval streets of York before we depart for Wales this afternoon. This evening we enjoy a recital of the world-renowned Welsh Male Voice Choir. (B,D)

Middlethorpe Hall Hotel was built in 1699 as the house for Thomas Barlow, a prosperous cutler in a bid to establish himself as a country gentleman. The house is part of the National Trust and a wonderful setting for our overnight in York.

Set in the historic oceanfront town of Llandudno on the Welsh waterfront, the Imperial Hotel is a grand lady, a reflection of the 1800s when this area was developed into “Queen of Welsh” Victorian resorts. The sea air, the large waterfront strand, the grand seaside buildings!

Jun 21 - Day 11 – Llandudno & Snowdonia Using the seaside Welsh town of Llandudno as our home base, we branch out into the countryside of Wales. We walk in the footsteps of another powerful English King, Edward I. Referencing a little popular culture, you might remember two other names he also went by, Edward Longshanks and the Hammer of the Scots. This king was portrayed in the movie “Braveheart” and was the real life advisory of historical Scottish hero William Wallace. We will visit his massive Castle of Caernarfon. During our journey in mountainous countryside of Snowdonia, today, get those cameras ready as we will cross the spectacular Llanberis Pass. A nice visit to the Bodant Welsh Food Center will also give us a chance to taste some famous Welsh treats. (B,D)

Jun 22 - Day 12 – Wye Valley to Cardiff Today we journey to southern coast of Wales to the well-known seaside town of Cardiff. Cardiff Bay is the largest waterfront development in Europe and a popular vacation spot for people in Southern England and Wales. Our travels take us through the stunningly beautiful Wye Valley region. This area was visited by many poets and writers, including Williams Wordsworth, Thomas Gray and Samuel Taylor Coleridge. We will stop by the wonderful ruins of Tintern Abbey, founded by Walter de Clare, Lord of Chepstow in 1131 AD. The Abbey has been in multiple poems and paintings. Enroute, we visit the popular market town of Llangollen, known for its gastronomic tradition. A perfect place to enjoy an independent lunch. Enjoy dinner tonight in Cardiff Bay during our overnight in this Welsh town. (B,D)

St. David’s Hotel is like a ship upon the water, with a spectacular setting in Cardiff Bay. This beautiful, modern hotel is the perfect setting for an overnight stay on the bay. There is not a bad view in the whole place!

June 23 - Day 13 – Baths & Stone Circles After an overnight in southern Wales, we are London bound this morning. As we venture towards London, we stop to visit the very historic city of Bath, a true Georgian masterpiece. You can assume that if a town is named after the act of getting soaked, there must be some reason and you would be right, hot springs! Unlike the residents of England in the past, the Romans loved a good dip in hot waters, thus this town was formed by the Romans in the 1st century AD as a spa town. Today because of the ruins and more importantly the Temple of Sulis Minerva, the town of Bath is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the most important Roman ruins north of the Alps. This afternoon, we visit another UNESCO World Heritage Site, the world-renowned Stonehenge. This site is most likely the most famous prehistoric monument in the world, built in stages starting around 5,000 years ago. The current arrangements of stones was built in the Neolithic period around 2500 BC. We continue onward to London, for the start of our 3 nights in this legendary British city. (B)

(B,D)

The Millennium Bailey’s Hotel, in the historic Kensington section of London, is a true Victorian beauty. Set inside historic townhouses, the hotel’s sweeping staircase, stained glass and intricate stonework will transport you back in time.

June 24 - Day 14 - Towers, Bridges & Abbeys This morning we enjoy sightseeing in London. We start with an overview, Buckingham Palace, Big Ben, the Parliament buildings, the River Thames and much more. You can’t visit central London without a visit to Westminster Abbey, one of Britain’s, and the world’s, most important churches. After exploring downtown, we are off to the famous Tower of London. We explore the White, Bloody and Martin Towers where many famous historical prisoners were held and often tortured. Witness the Crown Jewels, displayed in a specially built jewel house, and don’t forget the legendary Ravens, without whom the White Tower would supposedly fall and a great disaster befall the British Monarchy. The rest of the afternoon is free to explore and maybe revisit some of the sites we saw earlier in the day. After an early dinner together, we have a fun night out on the town and visit the famous West End (Britain’s Broadway) to experience an unforgettable show. (B,D)

June 25 - Day 15 – Windsor Castle Windsor Castle is the longest occupied castle in Europe and has been a Royal residence since Henry I started construction in 1070. Royals in residence have included everyone from Elizabeth I to King Henry VIII and Queen Victoria. Today the castle is a royal residence to one of the longest reigning queens in the world, Queen Elizabeth II. We explore the castle including visits to the State Apartments and St. George’s Chapel. It will be a fascinating day full of exciting history in the footsteps of Kings and Queens. Enjoy free time at Windsor for an independent lunch. The balance of the day is at leisure when we return to London for another night. We come together for a farewell dinner this evening and toast the grand journey. (B,D)

June 26 - Day 16 – Homeward Bound After a few weeks of exploring Great Britain, starting in the wilds of Scotland in the North through the scenic and fairytale middle, we end the tour in the bustling south. New friends, wonderful experiences, surprising moments and much more! (B)
