Research activity January 2012 onwards

Post Doc researcher Politecnico di Milano - Department of Management Engineering Research on new, social and innovative management approaches, practices and tools for social enterprise, enterprises networks, social innovation and social ecosystem

January 2009 – December Temporary Researcher 2011 Politecnico di Milano – Department of Energy. Research on International Cooperation and Development projects January 2009 – December PhD student Politecnico di Milano, Department of Management, 2011 Economics and Industrial Engineering. Ph.D. supervisor: Professor Giovanni Azzone. Research area of interest My research interests focus on new, social and innovative management approaches, practices and tools. They are articulated along three main streams: (A) approaches, practices and tools specific to sustainable and social enterprises, (B) approaches, practices and tools specific to enterprises networks, partnerships development and new social and sustainable supply chains, (C) approaches, practices and tools specific to complex social ecosystems considering new social innovation forms, new multi- stakeholder systems and impact investing. Research in these fields has been carried out employing both qualitative and quantitative research methodologies (in particular, survey, case study, and action research) and based on the three streams are developed national and international projects and the research results have been published at different international and national journals, books or conferences proceedings. The first research stream deals with new, social and innovative management approaches, practices and tools developed ad hoc to sustainable and social enterprises, as performances measurement system and social business models (A). In this field, I studied how the social enterprise (SE) can incorporate commercial forms of revenue generation (creating economic value) as a mean to accomplish their social/environmental mission (creating social and/or environmental value) and how to measure the social business performance and the social impact. Hence, my research aimed to contribute to the state of the art literature by developing an approach that can be applied to / by SEs to measure their results with respect to social, environmental and economic impacts. The proposed approach consists in a ‘general’ PMS model for SEs – i.e. the performance dimensions that should be measured – and a stepwise method to be used by SEs to develop their own PMS performance measurement systems (PMS). Moreover, I studied how the business model of social enterprise have to change to respond its specific characteristics and the essential dimensions to pass to social business model. Cometa. The project aims to development a methodology to measure the social and economic impact of Cometa, a social enterprise, focused on the hospitality, education and training of children and job placement of young people. The methodology is structured based on different stakeholders’ interests. Itaca. The project aims to development a methodology to measure its social and economic impact of Itaca, a social enterprise with the aim to support and rehabilitate the people with mental health disorders. PerMicro. The project aims to development a methodology to measure the social and economic impact of PerMicro, a social enterprise specialised in microcredit. The methodology developed considers the impact generated for companies, families and country. Green Move. The project that involves eight departments of Politecnico di Milano and funded by Regione Lombardia. It aimed at developing a set of guidelines for Regione Lombardia for supporting and managing the design of an e-vehicle sharing system. ENERGISE (Enlarged Network in Education and Research for a Growing Impact of Sustainable Energy engineering on local development). The project funded under the framework of the EDULINK II –EuropeAid. The project aims to boost the contribution of a Higher Education Institutions’ network in Ethiopia, Kenya and Tanzania.

The second research stream focus on the new, social and innovative management approaches, practices and tools developed ad hoc for enterprises networks, partnerships development and new social and sustainable supply chains (B). In particular, I studied how the new networks can promote new more sustainable chains to consumption of economic, social, material and human resources at developed countries and developing countries, in different fields: sustainable energy markets, agrofood business, recovery and recycling of raw material from WEEE and industrial reconversion for the generation of employment opportunities for disadvantaged. Moreover, my research tries to model the sustainable businesses based on networks that respond to local needs in the energy sector and agrofood field and the organization and activation of start-ups based on social business models. Finally I studied the systems to generate the employment opportunities for disadvantaged and "new disadvantaged" people: young; women; migrants, unemployed and the evaluation and monitoring systems connected. E-waste. The project aimed to maximize the value of WEEE recycling through the definition of alternative business models for recycling / industrial reconversion. S.I. P.O.’ F.A. in Sierra Leone. The project aims to strengthen the research capacity of the Sierra Leonean universities, through partnership activation and the research structure reinforcement, in order to better respond to the local demand through the development of social business model for the food chain. The last research stream is developing with the issue of new, social and innovative management approaches, practices and tools for complex social ecosystems considering new social innovation forms, new multi- stakeholder systems and impact investing (C). In this field, I focused on the measurement system that can support the social ecosystem evolution considering the co-existence of multiple stakeholders with different objectives, the relationship among the social business, the social innovation and the social investing. In this field, I started exploring the measurement role in the ecosystem equilibrium, how the performance measurement system could be designed to respond the different stakeholder objectives, the analysing the different alliance models among the private, public, non-profit and social business sectors. I am involved in the Task Force G8 with the aims to catalyze the development of the social investment market inside each member State and at supranational level with development cooperation initiatives, create a network of players operates in the impact investment space and foster the coordination between the single national initiatives and the Eu social agenda. Moreover I try to define a system to assess the socio-economic value created by large company (ENI, IREN) based on new partnership systems and the so-called CSR 2.0 (which entangles the core business with the social impact generation). Finally we are designing the first Italian Social Impact Bond with Ministry of research and the observatory on social investment at management department. Key papers are: • • •
