WISL Graduate Student Awards to Promote Communicating Chemistry •

All Ph.D. chemistry candidates are encouraged to include a chapter in their Ph.D. thesis communicating their research to non-specialists.

Cash awards of $500 will be given to the first 10 individuals whose Ph.D. thesis includes such a chapter.

The goal is to explain the candidate's scholarly research and its significance to a wider audience that includes family members, friends, civic groups, newspaper reporters, state legislators, and members of the U.S. Congress.

WISL will assist in the public dissemination of these contributions and will seek to increase the number of these awards.

ACS Presidential Working Group on Climate Science

The Working Group’s first of two tasks will be to develop a toolkit on the science of global climate for the 163,000 ACS members. A toolkit is an easy-to-use collection of basic equipment necessary to successfully perform a task. The Climate Science Toolkit will equip ACS members with the information and other resources necessary to help them assemble separate pieces of their knowledge on this topic into a robust intellectual structure.

ACS Presidential Working Group on Climate Science The second task is to articulate strategies for ACS members to use the Toolkit in disseminating climate science information to • school teachers, • college and university faculty, • civic and religious groups, • professional scientific and educational organizations, and • elected public officials at all levels and in all branches of government. These strategies should be aimed to enrich and expand upon the ACS policy statements on climate change and related ACS programs and activities.
