Science Fiction Book Report In order to continue the work we began by “reading” E.T. and discussing the basics of science fiction, we will complete individual book reports. This book report will consist of two parts: (a) a Reflective Reading Journal, and (b) a Creative Response. (We will discuss the second half of the book report in more detail after everyone has finished reading the novels.) If you want to read a specific book, but you aren’t sure if it qualifies as science fiction, remember to ask yourself: Does it contain known scientific information? Does it contain familiar elements of life today? Does it create an imaginary world? Part A: Reflective Reading Journal – Due Thursday, February 11, 2016 While reading your novel, you will keep a reflective reading journal. A successfully completed reflective reading journal would mean the completion of one response type for every third of the book. (I would recommend breaking your book into thirds when you first choose it!) Response A Title It AND Draw It OR Connect It

Response B Journal It AND Quote Analysis OR Symbol Analysis

Response C Vocabulary AND Make a Prediction OR Put Yourself in the Story

IT DOES NOT MATTER WHAT ORDER YOU CHOOSE TO COMPLETE THESE RESPONSES, however, whichever response you choose to do first will be due on Friday, January 29th. The second response will be due Friday, February 5th. The third and final response is due on Thursday, February 11th.

Reflective Reading Journal “Response A” ● Title It – Consider the chapter titles for the chapters in your current section of reading, and then create a new list of chapter titles. How does the author create the chapter titles? Do they revolve around the action of a main character? Do they connect to the larger theme of the novel? How do you want to name them? After you have created a new list of chapter titles, justify your decisions. In other words, explain in a well-written paragraph why you chose the titles that you did. For every chapter that you title you need a justification.

 Please see Miss Knauer if your book has an excessive amount of chapters!  If you are reading a book that does not have chapter titles, for instance if you have chosen a book with numbered chapters, simply choose a title for that section and provide your justification.  If you are reading a book that does not separate the story into chapters you will need to create those breaks. Explain in a couple sentences where you made the chapter break, and why you broke the story there. Then, provide the new titles and justifications. Then, choose to either “Draw It,” or “Connect It” ● Draw It – Illustrate at least one element of the story and provide an explanation of how your drawing fits into the larger narrative. For instance, you could focus on particular characters and how they react in situations in the book; you could draw an important setting; you could illustrate a moment in the text from a different character’s point of view. After you complete a drawing based on a section of reading, provide a paragraph that explains what you drew and why you chose to draw it, or what creative choices you might have made.  Drawings themselves do not need to be elaborate, however, the drawing and its explanation should prove a deeper level of thinking than a sketch or doodle. ● Connect It - Find a poem, book, news story, TV show, movie, game, comic, song, etc. that connects to your story. In a clearly written and thought-provoking paragraph explain the connection. Go beyond just explaining how the stories are similar and different. Compare how the different mediums (i.e., book vs. TV show, or song vs. book) convey similar messages. Think about what the authors are trying to say and how their messages differ because of the different mediums. Can a book accomplish more than a song? Can a game feel more real than reading a book?

Reflective Reading Journal “Response B” ● Journal It - Write a one page journal response for the reading. What reactions did you have as you were reading? Is it difficult to keep certain characters apart? If so, why? Did something surprise you about a main character’s reaction? Are any of your predictions coming true, or has the story line changed dramatically?  In general, these journals are meant for you to react to the reading (consider action, setting, dialogue, etc. but especially reactions you are having to changes in the plot!) Then, choose to complete either a “Quote Analysis,” or a “Symbol Analysis” ● Quote Analysis – Choose at least three (3) important quotes from the reading. For each quote, write the quote and page number, state who said the quote and why you think it is important that person said it. Lastly, explain what the quote means and why it is important to the overall story. ● Symbol Analysis - Choose a significant symbol from the reading and illustrate it (for instance, from E.T. you could choose the flowers, a glowing heart, or the book Mom reads Gertie, Peter Pan). After stating what the symbol is, explain in a well-written paragraph why the symbol is important to the overall story. Lastly, state why you believe the author chose this symbol.

Reflective Reading Journal “Response C” ● Vocabulary – Create a list of at least ten (10) words from your current reading section. Vocabulary words can be words that you either don’t know, or words that are important to the overall story.  IF YOU CHOOSE A WORD THAT YOU DO KNOW: Provide the word, its part of speech, and definition. Then, provide how it is used in the novel and write a sentence or two explaining how you know that this word is significant to the reading.  IF YOU CHOOSE A WORD THAT YOU DON’T KNOW: Provide the word, its part of speech, the definition of the word, and how it is used in the novel. Then, write an original sentence where you use the word correctly.  An example of defining words that are important to the overall story might be: In the movie E.T., the words “come” and “stay” become significant in the end because they explain how emotional the separation is for Elliot and E.T. Then, choose to complete either “Make a Prediction,” or “Put Yourself in the Story” ● Make a Prediction – In one well-written paragraph both make a prediction about where you think the plot is headed, and explain why you believe this prediction will come true. Are certain things being foreshadowed? Are characters becoming more dynamic? Think about what led you to make your prediction.  IF YOU SAVE RESPONSE C FOR LAST, make your prediction about the novel as if it were part of a series. What would the next novel be about? ● Put Yourself in the Story - Either place yourself in the shoes of a character in the story, or imagine that you have suddenly been transported into the world of your book. Explain the main action or conflict of the reading, and discuss either how you, as a particular character, reacted to a situation, or discuss how you would have reacted if you lived in this story world. Clearly explain how your actions (in the shoes of a character, or imagining yourself as a member of the story world) affect the overall plot, theme(s), and relationships between characters.  Consider the effect of the actions you would take either as this character or as yourself. Be sure to connect what you would do (as this character or yourself) with how these actions and reactions would shape the story.
