Scents of the Season Holiday Fragrance Class! Begin your class with a warm welcome. Welcome to our Scents of the Season Fragrance class! Is your nose ready for a treat?! First let me share with you a brief, but interesting, history lesson on fragrance. Fragrance is one of life’s most profound pleasures and one of nature’s most ancient gifts. The more we know about fragrance, the more effectively it can work for us. The art of perfumery originated at the beginning of civilization. Rare and precious perfumed oils used in Egypt, Rome and Greece were available only to the very wealthy. In the 13th century, alcohol was blended with fragrance oil to create the beginning of perfumes as we know them today. By the 28th century, France became the center of the perfume industry, and personalized scents became popular. The industry exploded in the United States during the 12920’s and 1930’s and American emerged as a dominant force in fragrance. Fragrance blending is considered an art. A perfumer must choose between thousands of materials to create a scent that will attract, beckon and stir the emotions and evoke memories. Materials used in perfumes come from all over the world and many are very rare and costly. Consider the cost when it takes 4,000 pounds of rose petals to make one pound of rose oil! Each Mary Kay® fragrance is completely unique. That’s because each one can include up to 1,000 different ingredients which vary not only in how they smell but also in their "staying power" on the skin. Different ingredients come into play in the fragrance at various stages of the perfume’s life on the skin. Perfumers distinguish between the various parts of the fragrance in the following way—there is a Music in Fragrance!

Music in a Fragrance The Top Note is the very first impression one receives from fragrance, and it is the most identifiable. It is the initial impact of the scent on the sense of smell. It is evaporative but it never altogether disappears. Instead, it softens. The top note is the brightest note in a fragrance. The Middle Note, or heart of the fragrance, unfolds and develops a few minutes after the perfume is applied to the skin and begins to blend with your body chemistry – about 10 minutes after the top note – the essence of a fragrance reaches its deepest intensity. The Bottom Note is the final impression of the fragrance. It is the most lasting part and can last several hours after the fragrance is applied.. When its the most harmonious – a point when all of the notes have molded gently together.

Even if two fragrances have identical odor descriptions, they will smell different from each other. The proportions of a fragrance vary to create a unique, complete and different blend. Here are a few terms that can help you talk to your customers about the different kinds of fragrance available in our collection. Perfume — (sometimes spelled parfum) The longest-lasting and strongest form of fragrance containing the highest concentration of fragrance oil. Eau de Parfum — (oh-deh-parfoom) A substantial version of fragrance with a lower concentration of fragrance oil than perfume. Eau de Toilette — (oh-deh-twalette) A lighter version of fragrance containing a lower concentration of fragrance oil than Eau de Parfum. Scented bath and body products — Soaps, powders, lotions, creams shower gels and other products that provide hints of fragrance.
