Understanding Transitions to Adulthood among Child Welfare Involved Youth (2008-2011) Funded $180,000 by the Eden Hall and Pittsburgh Foundations Co-Principal Investigator (with Dr. Jeffrey J. Shook, Co-PI) Analyzed administrative data to explore the pathways of youth across social service and justice systems and outcomes of youth who age out of the child welfare system. The Transition to Adulthood among Child Welfare Involved Youth: A Qualitative Examination of Race, Gender, and Service Use (2008-2011) Funded $10,000 by the University of Pittsburgh Center on Race and Social Problems Principal Investigator Conducted in-depth interviews and focus groups with youth in the process of aging out of child welfare and their service providers. Authored articles and reports based on these findings. Multidimensional Characteristics of Incarcerated Youth and the Role of Race (2006-2011) Funded $10,000 by the University of Pittsburgh Center on Race and Social Problems Co-Investigator (Dr. Jeffrey J. Shook, Principal Investigator) Conducted comprehensive survey of incarcerated youth at two facilities. Analyzed data and authored articles focused on race, gender, and mental health and substance abuse problems. Gendered Expectations in Juvenile Justice and Alternative Programs for Girls (2002-2005) Funded by the University of Michigan School of Social Work, Department of Sociology, and Institute for Research on Women and Gender Principal Investigator Used multiple qualitative methods – interviews, focus groups, ethnographic observation, and document analysis – to examine two residential programs for adolescent girls. Female Adolescents and Justice (2000-2003) Funded by the Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention Research Associate (Dr. Rosemary Sarri, Principal Investigator) Participated in all aspects of a comparative evaluation of residential and community-based programs for girls at-risk of entering or in the juvenile justice system. SOCIAL WORK PRACTICE EXPERIENCE The Corner Health Center, Evaluation Consultant, Ypsilanti, Michigan (2002-2004) Designed and implemented evaluations of teen health center’s educational programs on violence, HIV/AIDS, and substance use, and a harm reduction program for pregnant teens. Alternatives for Girls, Workshop Coordinator, Detroit, Michigan (2001) Coordinated and led a group of peer educators in planning and implementing a series of workshops on sex and dating for young women aged 13 to 17. Child Welfare and Protection Project, MSW Intern, Romania (1998) Worked on USAID-funded project implementing Romania’s 1996 child welfare legislation. Performed training needs assessment, conducted focus groups with social workers and institutional staff, and interviewed county directors of child protection. Participated in designing the detailed implementation plan for the 4-year, $5 million project.

Peace Corps, Community Organizer, Romania (1994-1996) Received grant from U.S. Democracy Commission to develop and implement 8-day girls’ leadership camp (Camp GLOW) which has since been replicated around the world; co-facilitated the camp for 80 participants.
