Oakmere Women’s Institute

We had a very rewarding afternoon on Saturday 13th July at the Fun Day in Oakmere Park promoting our institute. Executive Member Jacky Walker and Gordon provided a splendid gazebo for Ann Price to sell all sorts of cakes, tarts and biscuits in aid of WI funds raising £50. It was a very hot day, but none of the cakes melted! Rosemary Barry, Hon. Secretary, set up her costume jewellery stall in aid of Herts. Air Ambulance, which raised £91.50. Thanks to the generous people of Potters Bar who bought jewellery and donated money to such a good cause. Mrs Walker encouraged new prospective members and sold items of WI merchandise. President Mrs Betty Armsby assisted in the selling and was delighted at the result. Everyone enjoyed the lovely warm weather and the friendly atmosphere of the event.

Working in the Community – Magistrate

As a teacher of science with a specialism in chemistry, James Thompson would visit courts with his school. He was interested in the judicial system and his head teacher, who was also a magistrate, suggested James should think about becoming one himself. At the time his full time job prevented him pursuing it, but 10 years later, when James was considering early retirement, he saw a newspaper article inviting people to find out about the magistracy. Following this, James sent in his application, was interviewed, selected, recommended to the Lord Chancellor, then attended the swearing-in ceremony to become a Justice of the Peace. This is the first stage in becoming a magistrate, and thereafter initial training begins followed by the first sitting a few months later. A prospective magistrate should be mature and of good character, aware of social issues, with a sense of fairness, and committed to serving the community. He/she must also be able to understand documents, follow evidence, communicate effectively, weigh up arguments, and reach a fair decision. Magistrates are unpaid volunteers and are required to serve for a minimum of 13 days, or 26 half days a year. James is assigned to the Central and West Herts Bench based at St Albans, and may also serve at Watford or Hatfield Remand courts. A bench comprises three magistrates which should include one woman and one man, and should be representative of the community in terms of gender, ethnic origin, geographical spread, occupation and political affiliation. Most criminal cases and many civil matters are dealt with by magistrates, either in the adult court or the youth court. Not all cases are trials as many are guilty pleas or are proven in absence where the defendant chooses not to attend, and have come to court for hearing and sentence. More serious cases are passed to the Crown Court for sentencing as magistrates have limited powers in passing sentences beyond imposing fines, custody of up to six months, probation orders and community service orders. James has been a magistrate for nearly 13 years, and whilst he may be frustrated with the delays in legal process, he enjoys the mental challenge in hearing all sides of a case, discussing them with his colleagues on the bench, making a good judgment of what he’s heard, and seeing justice done. Hicks Chalet Bungalows…

Further to your article in the Summer 2013 issue of the Potters Bar Community News which I read today in the waiting room of the dentist, as you asked for experiences I can report that we were the first owners of what I believe was one of the first houses built in Oakroyd Avenue – number 82 on the circle – a house with three bedrooms and a bathroom upstairs. I think they were called chalet bungalows. I was actually born in January 1933 in Dove Lane, Potters Bar but we moved to Number 82 Oakroyd Avenue later that year. I lived there until 1957 when I got married. My parents continued to live there until they died in 1965 (mother) and 1971 (father). I well remember the florid Mr Hicks who went on to build a similar Oakroyd Avenue in Dunmow which gave a strange feeling when I drove past it many years ago. He also built Georges Wood Road just round the corner from where I now live in Brookmans Park. During the war we had two British soldiers billeted with us for a while. When my sister and I were young we would go to the shops in The Broadway in a pony and trap. The pony lived in a paddock at the bottom of our garden. The milkman and his horse, Neddy, called twice a day. It was great road and a very happy time. Derek Oram

The Association was set up in July by a group of 12 local residents concerned about what they believed were inappropriate planning proposals being passed by the local planning department. It was felt particularly that the conservation status of the area was being ignored when such decisions were being made. It was therefore decided to establish a Residents’ Association to work with the local authority and other agencies to try to improve the profile and services within the Royds. The purpose of the association is to uphold the unique Royds’ conservation status and to represent and promote the interests of all residents. The aim is to work in a responsible manner to secure improvements in partnership with the local council and other agencies. It must be emphasised that the Association is not opposed to residents extending their homes to cater for their family needs, provided that the Conservation rules and regulations are observed. What it is opposed to is the exploitation of existing properties, particularly by developers. Other areas in which the Association are taking an interest are the maintenance of trees in the area and endeavouring to find a solution to the dangerous traffic situations which can arise at the junction of Oakroyd Avenue and Baker Street as a result of commuter parking. An inaugural public meeting was held in August at St John’s Church and the excellent attendance illustrated the concerns of local people. Membership of the association is available to residents of Elmroyd Avenue/Close and Oakroyd Avenue/Close and full information is available from wwwroydsresidents.weebly.com.

King Charles the Martyr Halls are 10 years old

It was on 4th October 2003, 10 years ago, that the new Halls Complex at the Church of King Charles the Martyr, Mutton Lane, Potters Bar was opened by the Marquess of Salisbury, cementing his family’s connection with the Church which had begun in the late 1930s, when the Parish was founded to serve the western half of Potters Bar. The first Minister was appointed in December 1937 and held services in the dining room of his house in Borough Way – 9 people attended the Christmas Eucharist that year. Later the worshippers met in his garage and then in the Hall-cum-Church built near the corner of Mutton Lane and Dugdale Hill Lane, on land given by the Salisbury family. It was during the Second World War that the Church was built in the distinctive style of a Jacobean barn. Funded partly by the Diocese of London and partly by the Royal Martyr Church Union, the Church was consecrated on 12th July 1941. In 2003, the Church Hall was ‘added on’ and then a year later the new Vicarage was finished, so that all the buildings are now on one site. Since 2003, the Halls have been a popular and well used resource for a wide variety of community and social groups throughout the local area. During the past decades, the Church itself has firmly established itself in the life of the local community and has a lively and active membership which enjoys a wide variety of styles of worship, with both a Sung Eucharist and a Family Service every Sunday morning. A new venture, Messy Church, began in October: a once a month Sunday afternoon of craft, worship and food for all the family. The Church also provides ‘Charlie’s Angels’, a group for toddlers and their parents, grandparents and carers which meets every Wednesday in term time from 1.30–3pm; the ‘Wednesday Break Social Group’ which meets every other Wednesday afternoon from 2.30–4pm and the well-regarded ‘Open Door Cafe’ which is held every Thursday from 10.30am–2pm with all profits going to charity. Full details of all these activities which the Church provides can be found on the website www.kcm-church.org.uk, or by phoning 01707 665579. Canon Michael Burns Vicar

A Cat’s ‘Tail’…

“I normally wake my servants up at sunrise so they can arrange my breakfast. This particular morning, however, I was rudely grabbed and put (that is saying it kindly) in to some kind of cage. I hadn’t even had my morning stretch and biscuits – it was outrageous! The door was locked shut and I was moved into a loud moving vehicle that went around lots of corners – it was scary! When we got there we arrived at a strange smelling place and I could hear lots of phones ringing, people talking and other cats meowing. But the worst part – a large barking dog was trying to sniff me (or worse) through the bars! It went from bad to worse – a lady then started touching me in places that us cats really do not like, but I gave her a few of my finest words, let me tell you!” A trip to the vets can be very stressful for your cat. Try placing some clothing in the carrier that smells of the cat's favourite person and wipe a soft cloth around your cat's face to pick up his/her scent and place it in the carrier as well. Drive carefully and keep the carrier covered during the journey – refrain from loud alarming music! Once you are at the vets it is preferable to place your cat higher up and keep them covered (cats like to see but not be seen). There are local vets that now have ‘Catparks’, a specially designed stack where your cat can be placed high up where they feel safer and away from any dogs. Charlotte Cottle

Southridge RSPCA Golden Oldies cats appeal

‘When you walk through the Cattery and see their old faces looking at you so hopefully you want to scream to people to help them and offer them a retirement home’ said Anna White, Manager of Southridge RSPCA Animal Centre near Potters Bar, launching a Golden Oldies appeal for homes for older cats. ‘These old cats are so deserving, they ask for so little and give so much back. A lot of them have almost been to hell and back and now, in their twilight years when they ought to be enjoying the security of a loving home, it is like we are failing them. At the moment we are struggling to find homes for any type of cats, even the young pretty ones, so the old cats really do not stand much of a chance. It is almost too sad to bear. ‘If you don’t have a cat, or have one or two cats but could cope with another one, now is the time to come and see us because we need your help more than ever before’ said Anna. Terry Pavey, Chairman of the Friends of Southridge, added “I have always had the Golden Oldies; we have a couple at the moment. They make wonderful pets, affectionate and loving and always with a warm welcome when you get home. It is almost as though they are really grateful to you for giving them a chance and they want to say Thank You. They are either snoozing in the garden or snoozing on the settee: snoozing seems to be the preferred way of passing the time when you are an old cat! I would urge anyone thinking of getting a cat to come and see our old timers. You won’t be disappointed.” If you are thinking of getting a cat, and would consider giving a home to an older one, please get in touch with Southridge on 0300 123 0704, email [email protected]. Or you can visit the Centre where cattery staff would be delighted to give you more information. The Centre in Packhorse Lane, Ridge, Potters Bar, EN6 3LZ, is open from 11.00am until 4.15pm on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturdays, and from 1.00pm to 4.15pm on Sundays. It is closed on Wednesdays.

Dame Alice Owen’s School 400th Anniversary Carol Service

St Albans Cathedral, 7.30pm, Monday 16th December 2013 Our traditional Nine Lessons and Carol’s Service, with music provided by the School, usually held at St Mary’s Church in The Walk, Potters Bar is being held at St Alban’s Cathedral for our special 400th Anniversary year. Current students, their parents, governors, staff and Old Owenians will be invited to attend and parents of performing students will be given priority. We are hoping that guests will be able to take advantage of the excellent restaurant facilities in and around St Albans for refreshments either before or after the Service, as unfortunately we cannot offer our usual mulled wine and mince pies at the Cathedral. As this is the last 400th anniversary event of our amazing celebratory year we expect it to be oversubscribed. We have therefore reserved 200 special tickets for our Old Owenians, to be offered on a first come, first served basis. Please send a cheque NOW, made out to Dame Alice Owen’s School Fund Raising Account, for £5 per person, stating your Year of Leaving date, to: Ms Jackie Campbell c/o Finance Office, St Albans Cathedral Carol Service, Dame Alice Owen’s School, Dugdale Hill Lane, Potters Bar, Herts EN6 2DU. Applications are limited to 2 tickets per order – closing date Friday 15th November. You must include a stamped addressed envelope to either receive your tickets (to be sent out during w/c 25th November) or have your cheque returned if you have been unsuccessful. If you have any queries, you can contact Jackie on [email protected].

Pope Paul at the Opera

On 20th September Years 5 and 6 went to the Royal Opera House to see the Le Nozze di Figaro. They thought it was a stunning performance with beautiful singing and brilliant acting. Sophie, Year 6, thought the actors were very talented. Molly, Year 6, felt it was a bit long as it was on for over 3 hours, however, it was fun all the same. Year 6 teacher, Mrs Nicola, said it was a great comical farce and a great experience for the children. Neve, Year 6, thought the theatre was a beautiful place. It had amazing red carpets, curtains and chairs; it was very grand! By Neve Year 6

Year of Peace

This year at Pope Paul our theme is the ‘Year of Peace’. This is represented by a dove. We have painted a large dove in the entrance of our school and each Friday after Assembly, children who receive special achievement certificates have their names added to the Dove. Teachers will also be nominating ‘Peace Angels’. Children will be thinking about what it means to be peaceful with yourself and to be peaceful with others. By Daisy year 6

This half-term children at Pope Paul learnt about different countries in our topic ‘One World Week’. This was an opportunity for each class in the school to study a country. Reception looked at England, Year 1 Brazil, Year 2 China, Year 3 Thailand, Year 4 Zimbabwe, Year 5 Scotland and Year 6 Japan. We focused on their culture, religion, climate, population, etc. and cooking dishes from that country. As we are a ‘Fairtrade’ school we also looked to see if these countries are involved in ‘Fairtrade’ and making any links to support our ‘Peace’ mission. Choir of Angels – Our famous choir will be out and about before Christmas. Look out for them at the Wyllotts Centre, Canada Life and residential homes in Potters Bar. Christmas Fayre – Please visit our fantastic fayre on Saturday 30th November, 12–3pm. We look forward to seeing you all there.

The Celts are coming!

Well actually, they’ve arrived. Here at the The Wroxham School we decided it wasn’t enough to just learn about these Iron Age people: we wanted to live their life too. So over the last year and with some extraordinary help from some extraordinary people we built our roundhouse. Now we get to learn all about how the Celtic people lived, what they ate, what animals they kept and how they spent their days. Using our Forest School time we will be learning how to bake Iron Age bread, spin and weave fleece and use the hedgerows and trees to make lotions and potions just like the druids. We are also looking forward to the rainy days when we can huddle around the roundhouse fire and listen to Celtic tales. But don’t think it’s just going to be the children that are going to have all the fun. No, we want the Potters Bar community to join in too and so we’re offering some evening classes where you can make something Celtic like a bow (and arrows!), a carved stool, some jewellery or try your hand at spinning, weaving or cooking Iron Age style. Please get in touch if you’d like to find out more: [email protected].

Cranborne Primary School

What a busy start to the term! After a lovely summer break, children came back buzzing and full of enthusiasm. Teachers too were excited about their new classes and new challenges! The Cocker-Keilty Reading challenge proved a big success with over a hundred entries. Our winner, Michael Joelson, from year 1 managed to read 32 books over the summer holidays! What an achievement! He was presented in assembly with a Kindle Fire for his hard work. Year 6 have started their early preparation for SATs! Booster classes, revision and extra incentives are already in place to ensure high rates of progress and achievement. In May this year, we again saw our best results ever with high proportions reaching level 6! Well done Cranborne! Our Nursery and Reception children have settled into the school routine beautifully. They are looking smart and are eager to learn. More importantly our Reception children are managing their very full dinner trays at lunchtime! Year 4 are busy studying AFRICA! They will be making masks, looking at clothes, food and culture. At parents’ consultation evening, Year 4 parents were put through their paces in spelling bingo and mental maths activities! For example 480 divided by 6? Fortunately there were no tears! One of our school priorities this year is to continue to improve children’s spelling, grammar and punctuation. From fronted adverbials to subordinate clauses, teachers, teaching assistants and children are all busy learning the correct terminology and applying it to every lesson. It is crucial that children are exposed to this language as they are now tested in year year 6 and it naturally prepares them for secondary school and later life. Finally, our new playground equipment was installed over the summer! Our children are loving the new slide and dome. As you can see, playtimes are a real treat! Claire Keilty Deputy Headteacher

Black Panther Karate by Christine Alleyn

10

Christine Alleyn (4th Dan Sensei) has been training in Shotokan karate and self-defence for over 35 years now. Christine runs Black Panther Karate and her daughter Debbie who is also a Black Belt teaches along with Christine’s long term students who have reached a high level at BP Karate. The karate club has been running for 15 years in Brookmans Park and is a very popular karate club as Christine takes on children from the tender age of only 3 and a half years to adult and has classes in Cockfosters, Southgate and now in Cranborne School, Potters Bar. Christine has a full DBS check, is a first aider and also has a certificate for teaching children with disabilities, including autism, and experience in Nunchaku and Jujitsu. Christine says “I believe that everyone should have the opportunity to be able to defend themselves at any age as it helps the individual to have quick reactions when needed and to be aware of your surroundings. Karate is a long term sport and all of the children I have taught up to Black Belt are professional, caring individuals. They are like my family”. Students who learn karate and self-defence with Christine become disciplined, grounded and respectful. Karate teaches you to defend yourself not how to attack! BP Karate is a friendly but disciplined club and we now have more new Black Belts! Join our club at www.bpkarate.webs.com or ring 01707 661544, or email [email protected].

Dolphin Swimming Club

At the recent Dolphin Swimming Club Annual General Meeting, eight children received top club awards presented by the District Guide Commissioner, Caroline Parkes. Another young swimmer, Alice Coomes was awarded the Joy Bowyer Cup for particular effort and perseverance during the year. The aim of the club (now in its 44th year) has always been to teach and encourage swimming amongst young people. The staff are all volunteers, and membership of the club is drawn exclusively from the local Guide and Scout movements. The team are constantly on the lookout for willing helpers on poolside. It would involve just 1 hour weekly, in term-time only. Experience, though of course helpful, is not essential, as you will be given every assistance. If you are looking for something rewarding to do, please contact Martin on 01707 850987.

Potters Bar Rotary Classic Bike and Car Show

Potters Bar Rotary held its first Classic Bike and Car Show at Elm Court on the 15th September. Although the weather forecast was grim, over 70 cars and bikes were exhibited along with 9 charity stalls. Music was provided by The Hertfordshire Show Band and fellow Rotarian John Powell’s band, Shades of Midnight, who played 60s and 70s music. They were all fantastic. Thanks are due to Rotarians who helped on the day, also Tom Shirley and Pam Murphy for their help and support; Jason at JTT Autotech, who sponsored the event together with a friend of mine who wishes to remain anonymous; the Tartan Phoenix scout group who helped with front of house parking and my colleague from Rotary Chris Cardell-Williams who designed posters, banners, etc. This being the first time we have run this event, we are pleased with how it went and this will now replace the Community Fun Day which has been held over the last 14 years. Over £1,000 was raised with 80% going to Noah’s Ark Children’s Hospice and 20% to Rotary charities. The event next year will be held on 31st August at Elm Court. Anyone wishing to exhibit their bike or car for free should contact John on 01707 653992 or email [email protected]. John Godfrey

5th Potters Bar Scout Group is 75 years old in 2014

Founded in 1939 by John Scammel, at that time vicar of our sponsoring church – King Charles the Martyr. In 1975 they combined with the 10th Potters Bar to become 5/10th until changing back to the 5th in 1993. They now meet at a headquarters opened in 1998 at Furzefield, Potters Bar. Were you part of the group? Would you like to share your stories and meet other old members? We are holding a Burns Night celebration on 25th January and an exhibition and BBQ at Tolmers Scout camp on Saturday 26th June 2014. Further information will be available on our website www.5pbscouts.co.uk. Tickets and information by emailing [email protected], or telephone 01707 652836. John Rowley

Now (2013)

1st Northaw Scout Group has plenty to smile about on their Heritage Day!

Despite the dull, overcast autumnal day, Beavers, Cubs and Scouts of 1st Northaw Scout Group had plenty to smile about one Saturday afternoon. They recently received an award from the Big Lottery Fund to help refurbish the village Scout headquarters. The money has been used so far to refurbish the kitchen and toilets, improve the outside lighting and later this month the driveway and car park will be resurfaced. The Saturday event was officially opened by The Reverend Rachel Phillips, vicar of St Thomas-a-Becket, Northaw and St Andrew’s Cuffley, blessing the facilities. 1st Northaw Scout Group has had a revival of late, with the Beaver Scout and Scout sections restarting after a prolonged break. Diane Holwerda has produced an excellent programme that is encouraging more young people to the Beaver section while Chris Brunning has done the same for the Scout section. The opening ceremony was part of a Heritage Day, the final event in their 80th Anniversary Celebrations, with ex Scouts and leaders visiting the Village HQ to look at exhibits depicting the progress of the Group over the years. Among the guests were Moira Morris, Cub Leader, 1976 to 1988, her husband Eric who was the Group Scout Leader from 1978 to 1988 and County Councillor, for Rural Hatfield, Mark Mills-Bishop. Mark said he was very impressed with all the Scout Movement has done for young people within Hertfordshire. He was keen to help, in any way he could, to further improve the facilities for Scouts in the area. Mark was having an afternoon of Scouting as he was off to East Herts Scout Fete in Broxbourne, on leaving Northaw. The catchment area for 1st Northaw Scout Group covers Essendon, Wild Hill, Little Berkhamsted, Epping Green, Bayford, Brickendon and Newgate Street. If any young people would like to join the Group’s Beaver Colony, Cub Pack or Scout Troop then please contact Charles Dace (07776 408311) or Mike Aston (01707 658644).

Christmas is coming

It’s a season of mixed emotion – joy, anticipation, busyness, but also often tinged with sadness. On Christmas Day there is a special Christmas dinner at Tilbury Hall in Darkes Lane, for those folk who may be alone on that day and would like to enjoy the company of others who similarly will not be spending the day with friends and family. If you would like to come along to the lunch at 12.30pm and stay until 4.00 pm you would be made very welcome. For more details, including your transport needs, please ring Di Travers 01707 656311. If you have been a volunteer in the past and would like to help this year, Di would love to hear from you.

Is the Darkes Lane Post Office closing?

Not according to the representative from the Post Office when speaking to a public meeting urgently called by the CWU union. They in turn allege that it is scheduled to close at the end of March next year. When is a closure not a closure? When it is a franchise, according to the representative from the Post Office. He said Potters Bar will still have a Post Office “somewhere in the town centre” operated by a “retail outlet” as a franchise. But not in the present building which is owned by Royal Mail. However they are still looking for a “partner” to take it on from the end of the financial year at which point the building will be vacated. A meeting to discuss the proposals was held on Friday 27th September at Wyllyotts Centre and this was attended by members of the public, shop owners, local councillors and Post Office staff. The Darkes Lane Post Office is a Crown Post Office owned and run by Post Office Ltd, compared to the many small branches operated by independent retailers under a franchise system. Nationally the Post Office runs at a loss of £37million and the meeting was informed that the Potters Bar Office lost £100,000 annually, costing £2 for every £1 it takes in revenue. (The accounts were however, not available at the meeting.) Post Office Ltd has been told by the government to end the losses and so they plan to close (or franchise) 70 of their 373 Crown Offices. Several people pointed out that the Post Office is not only a retail outlet but a public service. It acts as the focus of Darkes Lane providing valuable support to elderly people who form a large proportion of the local population. It offers a trusted service for transactions such as money exchange and passport renewals and the staff were praised as knowledgeable and very helpful. Concern was expressed that the change in status being sought would undermine this valued Town service. The discussion suggested other ways to support the business such as expanding the activities and also identified the anomaly that if the Post Office was losing so much money why would a local retailer take it on? Additionally, Local Councillors suggested that it would be helpful if contact be made with the Borough Council about additions to the service and further options around the use of the building. It is important that local people make any concerns or suggestions known. Views can be passed to our local MP James Clappison at House of Commons SW1, and to the Minister for Postal Affairs, Jo Swinson, BIS, 1 Victoria Street, London SW1H 0ET. The Potters Bar Society would also be pleased to receive any observations about the initiative and can be contacted on our website www.pbsoc.org.uk or through a committee member. Margaret Ohren

Come and Sing!

So many of us love music and singing, but sometimes, as our memories deteriorate, we stop doing the things we love. Don’t miss out on the chance to join a fantastic group in Potters Bar for people with dementia who love to sing. ‘SINGING FOR THE BRAIN’ is a free service provided by Alzheimer’s Society which uses singing to bring people together in a friendly, fun and sociable setting. We meet regularly on Thursday mornings from 10.15–11.30am at St John’s Methodist Church on Baker Street and after a very warm welcome with great tea and biscuits and lots of chatter, we then sing our hearts out for about an hour. We sing songs old and new, with and without song-sheets, which gives everyone a chance to join in with the fun and the joy of singing. The sessions are open to people with dementia and their partners/carers, who are still living at home. If you’d like to join us, or would like more information about ‘SINGING FOR THE BRAIN’, please call Jill on 07803 115810.

Potters Bar Senior Section (or Rangers)

Are you aged 14 to 25, female and looking for something to do with your Monday evenings? This could be the perfect thing for you! Senior Section (or Rangers) is part of Girl Guiding, but is quite relaxed as it is for older girls. You do not have to go every week if it doesn’t suit you and you only have to pay for the times you go. This term we have a mixture of lots of exciting and relaxing evenings including things like Ice Skating, a Wii Night and even a Night Hike. We are also attending the famous Big Gig at Wembley this term which will have lots of big musicians performing for the evening (mostly from the Pop genre) which is always great fun and a big success all around England! Currently 5 acts have been announced already including Little Mix, Katy B and Conar Maynard. Also there are discussions in the forums about this online where you can suggest the acts you would like to see. Last year there were performers such as Scouting for Girls, Lawson, JLS, Cover Drive and many more, so there was something for everyone. A few weeks ago we went to the CTT (come to Tolmers) camp. It is weeklong and we went without leaders (though there were adults to check up on us if we needed them) and it was an amazing experience. Personally I had never been on a CTT camp before, but I had heard about them. People from Scouts and Guides (boys and girls aged 10+) come from all over the country and it is a great opportunity to make friends and try out things you wouldn’t normally do. You do not have to go for the whole week, we had some girls who only came for one night, so it is quite relaxed and you don’t constantly have to be doing things if you don’t want to. I would recommend Senior Section (or Rangers) to anyone because it’s great fun and all the girls get on well together even though we all come from different schools and different backgrounds. If you would like to get involved simply email Carol at [email protected] and she will be happy to help, or join us https://www.girlguiding.org.uk. Georgina Hull Aged 15

Lighting up the Town

Christmas lights have again this year kindly been funded by County Councillor Peter Knell and Leader of the Council and County Councillor Morris Bright along with fellow ward councillors in Potters Bar all giving money from their locality budgets. My particular thanks to Peter Knell who contacted fellow councillors leaving me with just two forms to fill in for the grants. Without our councillors help we could not put up the lights each year. The money is used for storage, testing, erection, insurance, running costs and dismantling. A company I have used for several years do this for a very good rate and give us superb service. Coupled with our Rotary sleigh, this makes Christmas a fun, bright occasion enjoyed by residents and visitors to the town. Thanks again to our local councillors for the funding. John Godfrey

A Vision of Transformed Cancer Care

Macmillan Cancer Support and East & North Hertfordshire NHS Trust are planning to build an innovative new £2.9 million cancer centre at the Lister Hospital in Stevenage. The objective is to deliver the best cancer care to the heart of the community. This exciting state of the art cancer centre will bring all the oncology outpatient services into one building. The plans include providing the very best clinical facilities including chemotherapy suites and information services to meet the needs of people living with cancer, their families, carers and friends. It is an understatement to say that the new centre is desperately needed as the current building is no longer fit for purpose with cramped conditions resulting in cancer patients being cared for in an environment not really suited to excellent care. Funding for the new Centre is being met partly by the NHS and partly by Macmillan, who need to raise £1.5million themselves. A major fund raising campaign was launched in May and steady progress is being made towards the target. If you would like to get involved, there are a number of ways in which you could help Macmillan achieve their objective. To make a donation or obtain further information, please contact the Fundraising Support Centre on 0300 1000 200 or email [email protected] or visit the website www.macmillan.org.uk.

High energy, high drama and mince pies feature in varied Potters Bar Theatre Company programme

Shenanigans on the streets of London and the painful process of family reconciliation in rural New England combine to form a varied offering from Potters Bar Theatre Company in its upcoming productions. There’s even a little bit of Christmas spirit thrown into the mix for good measure. The end of November sees the high-octane, energy-packed Madness musical, Our House, at Wyllyotts. This song-anddance spectacular charts the fortunes of teenager Joe Casey as he tries to win the heart of his dream girl. Fans can sing along to no fewer than 15 ‘nutty boy’ hits, including My Girl, Wings of a Dove, Baggy Trousers, House of Fun, Driving in My Car and It Must Be Love. You and the family can then ease yourselves well and truly into festive mood with A Merry Little Christmas at Tilbury Hall in December, featuring a classic selection of seasonal music and words washed down with mulled wine and mince pies.
